The morning sun streamed through Lily's window, casting warm patches of light across her desk. The thirteen-year-old girl was sprawled across her chair, flipping lazily through an ocean encyclopedia she had already read seven times from cover to cover. The book's cover was worn and dog-eared from use, featuring a bright blue octopus whose eyes seemed to sparkle with an invitation to dive into the blue depths below.
"If only I could really go and see it," Lily murmured softly, her fingers tracing over the dark blue image on the page. The picture showed a pitch-black undersea realm, dotted with faint specks of light from bioluminescent creatures—like stars that had fallen from the night sky into the ocean depths. That special light is called bioluminescence, a remarkable ability many deep-sea creatures use to communicate, hunt, and evade predators.
Just as Lily lost herself in another daydream about the deep ocean, the doorbell rang.
"Lily! You have a letter!" her mother's voice called from downstairs.
"A letter?" Lily blinked, startled. In this age of emails and instant messaging, who still wrote letters? She raced downstairs and received a rather heavy envelope from her mother.
The envelope was deep ocean blue, with no postmarks—just a silver wax seal bearing a spiral seashell pattern. Lily carefully tore it open, and a thick piece of parchment slid out, along with a faintly glowing photograph.
Lily held her breath at the photograph. It showed a uniquely designed submersible slowly descending through schools of colorful fish. Through its porthole, one could faintly make out a figure in a white lab coat. On the parchment, in elegant calligraphy, it read:
"Dear Lily Li,
Greetings! I am Dr. Chen from the Deep Sea Research Institute. We have noticed your extraordinary passion and curiosity for the ocean, especially the deep sea. Your name has appeared on our candidate list for the 'Blue Pupil' Deep Sea Exploration Summer Camp.
If you accept this invitation, please bring this letter on the first Monday of July to the Starfish Research Vessel on the East Sea coast. Together, we will descend in the Nautilus submersible into the least understood realm on Earth—the deep sea.
There, you will witness glowing lanternfish, schools of giant squid, ancient bacteria frozen in ice for millions of years, and countless magical creatures you never imagined existed.
If you are ready, come keep this deep-sea appointment!
Your friend who looks forward to meeting you, Dr. Chen Haiyun Chief Scientist, Deep Sea Research Institute"
Lily's hands trembled slightly—not from fear, but from overwhelming excitement. Her heart raced as if it might burst from her chest, her eyes sparkling with irrepressible joy.
"Mom!" Lily shouted, her voice trembling with barely contained excitement. "Can I go? Can I really go?"
Her mother walked over, glanced at the letter, and smiled warmly. "It looks like your deep-sea dream is about to come true."
Lily hugged her mother tightly, her eyes glistening. Growing up, she had lost count of how many times people told her she "thought too much" or had "unrealistic ideas," how many times she heard that "girls aren't suited for marine research." But now, a real ocean scientist was inviting her to explore the deep sea.
"I will definitely go," Lily promised silently in her heart. "I will definitely see that mysterious world."

The Deep Sea: Earth's Final Frontier
Seven weeks later, Lily stood on the deck of the research vessel Starfish.
The sea wind howled around her, carrying a salty tang that tousled her long hair. Behind her lay the receding coastline; before her stretched an endless expanse of blue. July's sun was bright, but the wind carried a coolness that reminded Lily—she was about to enter a world entirely different from land.
"Welcome aboard, Lily!"
A gentle voice spoke from behind her. Lily turned to see a woman in her forties walking toward her, dressed in a crisp white lab coat, her graying hair neatly tied back, warm and wise eyes gleaming behind her glasses. This was Dr. Chen—the one who had sent Lily the letter.
"Dr. Chen!" Lily said excitedly, extending her hand. "Thank you so much for inviting me!"
Dr. Chen smiled and shook her hand. "Don't mention it. I've read those essays you wrote about the ocean—your imagination reminds me of myself when I was young." She gently patted Lily's shoulder. "Come, let me introduce you to our destination—the deep sea."
Dr. Chen led Lily to a conference room aboard the ship. In the center of the room stood a massive holographic projector. As it activated, a three-dimensional cross-section of the ocean materialized in the air—from the surface all the way to the seafloor, like a grand blue scroll unfurling.
"Did you know, Lily," Dr. Chen said, pointing to the image, "the ocean covers about seventy-one percent of Earth's surface, with an average depth of 3,700 meters. But if we compare the ocean to a human community, the part humans have explored might be less than five percent of this entire community."
Lily's eyes widened. "Five percent? How is that possible?"
Dr. Chen smiled and pressed a button on the projector. The image zoomed in, revealing different ocean zones from surface to depths. "Because the ocean is vast, and the deeper you go, the harsher the environment becomes. Let me introduce you to the ocean's five main layers."
