Dudu's Very First Mark
---
The morning sunlight crept through the curtain, drawing a golden circle on Dudu's pillow. Three-year-old Dudu rubbed his eyes, rolled over, and discovered that Mom was no longer beside him.
"Mama? Mama?" Dudu sat up and called out in his cute little voice.
No one answered. The bedroom door was slightly open, and clattering sounds came from the kitchen—Mom must be preparing breakfast.
Dudu decided to go find Mom himself. His bare feet stepped carefully off the bed onto the cool floor. The living room was quiet, except for the goldfish in the aquarium blowing bubbles.
Just then, Dudu's eyes caught sight of the low cabinet next to the coffee table. There was a drawer there that Mom never let him open.
"Mama said there's a secret in there," Dudu tilted his head and said to himself.
Dudu stood on his tiptoes and pulled with all his might—
"Click," the drawer opened!
Inside lay a square, hard little box. The box was covered with pictures of many colors—red, yellow, blue, green—like a beautiful rainbow!
"What's this?" Dudu picked up the box and looked around curiously.
He tried pressing the little button on the box—
"Pop!"
The lid popped open. Wow! Inside stood a neat row of small, round little sticks wearing colorful coats. Each stick had a flat, shiny spot on its head, as if a little elf had nibbled on it.
"These are... for drawing!" Dudu recognized them. He'd seen teachers use these to draw in kindergarten!
Dudu carefully picked up a red crayon. It was red and round, the perfect size for his little hand.
"Mama! Mama!" Dudu ran excitedly toward the kitchen, "I found it! I found it!"
Mom was frying an egg and turned around at the sound, seeing the crayon in Dudu's hand, she couldn't help but smile.
"Oh dear, our little Dudu found Mama's secret treasure!" Mom knelt down and said gently, "These are crayons, for drawing. Would you like to try?"
"Yes! Yes! I want to draw!" Dudu clapped his hands with joy.

An Invitation from a White Paper
Mom brought a stack of big white paper from the study, spread an old newspaper on the floor, and laid the white paper flat on top.
"You can draw wherever you like," Mom said, "on the paper, on the newspaper, anywhere."
Dudu knelt in front of the white paper, clutching the red crayon tightly in his hand. He looked at Mom, then at the paper, a little nervous.
"How... how do I draw?" Dudu asked quietly.
"Just draw however you want," Mom smiled, "hold the crayon in your hand, then rub it on the paper."
Dudu took a deep breath and pressed the red "little head" of the crayon onto the white paper.
然后——
And then—
He rubbed hard!
"Swish—"
A wiggly, red line appeared on the paper!
Dudu's eyes widened immediately, his mouth forming a small 'O'.
"Mama! Mama! Look! Look!" Dudu's voice went up with excitement, "There's a line on the paper! I made it!"
Mom nodded with a gentle smile: "Yes, Dudu is so great! You made your very first mark!"
Encouraged, Dudu started drawing even harder. He turned the crayon sideways and "swish swish swished" across the paper.
One line, two lines, three lines...
Wiggly lines, straight lines, spiral lines...
Red lines, yellow lines, blue lines...
Dudu drew more and more happily, faster and faster. Sometimes the crayon flew off the paper, but he didn't care, his little hands waving in the air, making "woo woo" sounds like driving a little train.

Dudu's Wonderful Discoveries
While drawing, Dudu suddenly stopped. He stared at one of the lines on the paper, tilting his head to look for a long time.
"Mama, look," Dudu pointed to that wiggly line, "this one looks like a little snake!"
Mom leaned over to look and smiled: "It really does! All wiggly-wormy, like a little snake crawling along."
Dudu pointed to another line: "This one looks like a river! With splashy sounds!"
"A river, hmm, very much so!" Mom nodded, "That's just how rivers wind their way along."
Dudu's eyes grew brighter and brighter, and he discovered something new: "Mama! This one looks like your hair! Long and wavy!"
Mom laughed and deliberately flipped her hair in front of Dudu: "Yes, Mama's hair is just like that."
Dudu was overjoyed, feeling so clever and capable of drawing so many things!
Actually, this is an important stage in children's drawing—the scribbling stage. Although scribble-stage artwork may look like a jumble of lines, to Dudu, every single line has its own story.
After drawing for a while, Dudu started using different crayons. He picked up yellow first and drew a big circle on the paper; then blue, drawing a vertical line; then green, drawing some short lines next to the circle.
"Mama! I drew a sun!" Dudu announced excitedly.
Mom looked and indeed there was a yellow circle on the paper, surrounded by colorful lines of different lengths. Mom said gently: "Hmm, this is a golden sun with rays!"
Dudu nodded contentedly and went back to drawing. In no time, the paper was covered with colorful lines, circles, and dots.

Dudu's Mom's Mini-Class: What is the Scribbling Stage?
> > What Parents Might Be Thinking: > > At this point, you might be thinking: Aren't Dudu's "sun," "snake," and "river" just a bunch of messy lines? Don't worry, let's learn together about the scribbling stage.
Three Stages of Scribbling
The famous American art educator Viktor Lowenfeld conducted extensive research and divided children's artistic development into several stages. The scribbling stage is the first stage, typically appearing between the ages of two and four.
During this stage, children's scribbling goes through three substages:
Stage 1: Random Scribbling (around age 2)
At the beginning, babies just unconsciously leave marks on the paper with whatever's in their hands. They don't yet understand what "drawing" means, they just thin
