Hello, Little Red Dot!
Hello, Little Red Dot!
Where Is the Little Red Dot?
Imagine you have a magic magnifying glass right now. Hold it up in front of a globe and slowly slide it down through Asia — past the snowy Himalayas, past the Great Wall of China, past the green rice fields of Vietnam — all the way to a tiny speck near the bottom of the map. What do you see? A little red dot so small you almost need the magnifying glass to spot it? That's Singapore! One of the smallest but most amazing countries in the world.
Look at the map — Singapore is a little red dot."(你看看地图,新加坡就是一个小红点。)
Why is it called the "Little Red Dot"? Here's a fun story. In 1998, when Singapore's founding father, former Prime Minister Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, was being interviewed by foreign reporters, he joked, "How do we know where Singapore is? Look at the map — Singapore is a little red dot." This started out as a bit of self-deprecating humor, but it quickly turned into one of the world's most famous nicknames. Since then, "Little Red Dot" has become one of the most affectionate and unique nicknames for Singapore.
Are you ready?
Meet our two main characters! Mia is a curious 9-year-old Chinese girl who loves drawing and collecting fun facts. Adi is a 9-year-old boy whose family is from Malaysia but was born in Singapore — his name "Adi" actually means "mountain" in Tamil, one of Singapore's four official languages. The two of them are about to set off on a "Treasure Hunt of the Little Red Dot" to find four legendary golden keys. Ready? Let's go!
Let's go back to the map and look more carefully. Singapore is located in the heart of Southeast Asia, right at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. To the north, separated by a long man-made waterway called the Strait of Johor (柔佛海峡), lies Malaysia's Johor Bahru. To the south, across the Singapore Strait, you'll find Indonesia's Riau Islands. In other words, although Singapore is tiny, it sits at a very important crossroads — right at the entrance to the Strait of Malacca, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
Why is this location so important? Imagine this — about one-quarter of the world's most important cargo passes through the Strait of Malacca! Electronics from China, Japan, and Korea heading to Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; oil from the Middle East heading to Asian countries — almost all of it passes by Singapore's doorstep. This "geographic advantage" helped transform Singapore from a quiet fishing village into one of the world's busiest ports today. The Port of Singapore has been one of the busiest transshipment hubs in the world for decades.
Do you know why there's a lion on Singapore's coat of arms? Because the name "Singapore" comes from the Sanskrit word "Singapura," where "Singa" means "lion" and "pura" means "city." So "Singapore" originally meant "Lion City" — that's why this book is called "Lion City Treasure Hunt"! All over Singapore, you'll see lion statues and symbols — the most famous is the Merlion, which has a lion's head on a fish's body, symbolizing Singapore's transformation from a fishing village (fish) into a powerful nation (lion).
Tiny Singapore, Giant Energy
Just how small is Singapore? Let's feel it through some fun comparisons. Singapore's total area is about 733 square kilometers, roughly 1/30 the size of Beijing. If you spread Beijing out flat, Singapore would only cover a tiny part of it. But guess what — about 5.91 million people live in that tiny space! That works out to around 8,000 people per square kilometer, making Singapore one of the most population-dense countries in the world.
To make it even clearer, here are more comparisons: Singapore is about 2.4 times the size of Hong Kong, or about 3.5 times the size of Shanghai's Pudong New Area. If you combined Pudong Airport with Shanghai Disneyland, you'd get something close to Singapore's size. Need something even more vivid? You can drive across Singapore from east to west in about 45 minutes, and from north to south in about 30 minutes. The phrase "tiny dot" really is no exaggeration!
But don't be fooled by its tiny size! In this little dot, 6 million people are creating miracles that amaze the entire world. Singapore's GDP per capita has surpassed that of the United States, ranking among the top in the world. Changi Airport has been named the "World's Best Airport" for years, and in 2023, it opened the dazzling "Jewel" complex with the world's tallest indoor waterfall — the Rain Vortex, standing at 40 meters tall. Singapore's greenery is also world-class — about 47% of the country is covered in green plants, which is why Singapore is also called the "Garden City."
Even more amazingly, Singapore's land area is actually growing! It sounds like magic, but Singapore has been doing "land reclamation" — using sea sand to create about 25% of its current land. So about a quarter of Singapore's 733 square kilometers is man-made! There are even bigger reclamation plans for the future to meet population and economic needs. Good question, Mia — the government has strict environmental standards to minimize the impact on marine life, and artificial reefs are built to help compensate.
The map below (Mermaid flowchart) will help you clearly see Singapore's "location" and "neighbors":
