Chapter 1: What is Chinese Painting? Entering the World of Danqing
Imagine holding a soft brush in your hand, dipping its tip gently into black ink, and then slowly moving it across a piece of white rice paper. With a light turn of your wrist, a flowing cloud appears on the paper; with a gentle pause of your fingertips, a solid rock gains weight. This is the charm of Chinese painting—using the simplest tools to create the most wonderful world.
What is Chinese Painting? The Secret of Danqing
Long, long ago, when our ancestors still lived in simple thatched cottages and made tools from stones and sticks, they had already begun to draw. Can you imagine? More than six thousand years ago, our ancestors painted various beautiful patterns on pottery—joyful little fish leaping, proud little deer standing tall, and flowers spinning and dancing. These patterns painted on pottery were the earliest ancestors of Chinese painting.
Ancient people called painting "Danqing." You might wonder why they used these two characters, "丹" (dan) and "青" (qing)? "丹" is a bright red pigment, very vivid and beautiful; "青" is a blue pigment, like the color of the sky and the sea. In ancient times, these two colors were the most commonly used and most important colors. So, ancient people called painting "Danqing." This name sounds so beautiful, like describing beautiful scrolls of paintings.
However, the term "Danqing" doesn't just mean painting; it has a deeper meaning! The ancients said "丹青不渝" (danqing buyu), meaning that a true painter's love for painting will never change. Just as red and blue colors never fade, a painter's pursuit of art will never stop. What a noble spirit this is!

If you want to paint a Chinese painting, what tools do you need? Let's look at the unique "Four Treasures of the Study" together!
The most important tool for Chinese painting is the brush. The brush tip is made from goat hair, rabbit hair, or weasel hair—soft and gentle, like the warm fur of little animals. A good brush has a beautiful name called "Lake Brush" (湖笔), because it's produced in Huzhou, Zhejiang, where brush-making skills have been passed down for over a thousand years. The characteristic of the brush is that it can create thick and thin lines, just like music has high and low notes, the lines drawn also have rich variations.
Painting requires ink. Ancient people ground ink sticks on an inkstone to create ink, just as naturally as we use pencils to write on paper. Ink sticks are made from pine soot and animal glue—they look black and hard, but with a little water added to the inkstone and slow grinding, you can create ink of different concentrations. Ancient people also discovered a secret: if the ink is ground thick, the lines drawn are deep; if the ink is ground thin, the lines drawn are light. This variation in concentration gives Chinese painting its unique sense of layering.
The paper used for Chinese painting is very special—it's called rice paper (xuan paper). Xuan paper is produced in Xuancheng, Anhui. Because it's white and soft with excellent water absorption, when you paint on it with a brush, the ink slowly spreads, creating a hazy beauty, just like morning mist. There are many types of xuan paper: raw xuan, cooked xuan, and half-cooked xuan. Raw xuan absorbs water fastest, so ink spreads widely when applied—perfect for freehand landscapes and flowers and birds; cooked xuan has a coating of alum, making it less prone to spreading—suitable for detailed gongbi painting; half-cooked xuan is somewhere in between.
The inkstone is the stone used for grinding ink. The best inkstones are made from Duanxi stones in Zhaoqing, Guangdong, called Duan inkstones. Duanxi stones are fine and smooth, so grinding ink doesn't produce harsh sounds, and the resulting ink is particularly delicate. Ancient people regarded inkstones as treasures. Some inkstones are carved with exquisite patterns, such as dragons and phoenixes bringing good fortune, or pines and cranes representing longevity. The inkstone itself became a work of art.
These four things—brush, ink, paper, and inkstone—are together called the "Four Treasures of the Study" (文房四宝), meaning they are the four most precious treasures in a scholar's study. If you went to an ancient stationery store, the shopkeeper might proudly say: "The Four Treasures of the Study here are all the best!" It's like when we go to a toy store, the shopkeeper tells us how good their toys are.
The Earliest Painters: Stories of the Yellow Emperor and Shihuango
Long, long ago, there was a great leader called the Yellow Emperor (黄帝) who led people to build houses, invent clothing, and create writing, making people's lives better and better. The Yellow Emperor felt that there were still many beautiful things in life worth recording, so he ordered a man named Shihuango (史皇) to paint. Shihuango is the earliest recorded painter in history. He used tree branches as brushes and mud and stones as pigments, painting various patterns. It is said that Shihuango's first painting was of mountains, rivers, grass, and trees, because these were the most common things in people's daily lives.
Although we cannot see Shihuango's paintings today, we can imagine that scene: a primitive person carefully drawing on cave walls with a tree branch, painting their observations and understanding of the world. This might have been humanity's earliest "artistic creation."
Painted Pottery of the Neolithic Era: Art from Six Thousand Years Ago
Let's push time forward to more than six thousand years ago, the prehistoric era. At that time, people had already begun making pottery from clay. Did you know? Chinese people were one of the first peoples to invent pottery! Archaeologists have found many painted potteries from the Neolithic era across the country. The patterns on these painted potteries are so beautiful that they show us the artistic talent of our ancestors from six thousand years ago.
The most famous painted pottery is the "Painted Pottery Basin with Human Face and Fish Patterns" unearthed from the Banpo si
