Imagine standing on a vast grassland where the wind makes the grass wave like ocean waves, extending all the way to the horizon. There are no tall buildings or highways here, only blue sky, white clouds, running horses, and white yurts. This is Mongolia—a magical nation born on horseback.
On this vast land, many brave nomadic tribes once lived. They were herders for generations, riding horses and chasing water and grass, settling wherever water flowed. These grassland people, though few in number, possessed unyielding characters and superb horsemanship. No one could have imagined that at the end of the 12th century, a great empire that would change world history would be born on this grassland—the Mongol Empire.
To understand the Mongol Empire, we must first get to know its birthplace—that magical and expansive Mongolian grassland.
The Mongolian grassland is located in the heart of Asia and is one of the most expansive grasslands in the world. Its total area exceeds 1.5 million square kilometers, equivalent to one-sixth of China's land area! If we rode horseback from the east to the west of this grassland, it would take a full two months. On this land, the terrain is flat and open, with endless green seas of grass extending to the horizon, connecting with the blue sky and white clouds to form a magnificent picture.
The grassland's climate is very distinctive. Summers are warm and rainy, with lush grass growth and plump cattle and sheep; winters are bitterly cold, with heavy snow sometimes covering the entire grassland, making it difficult for livestock to find food. The weather here changes unpredictably, sometimes experiencing four seasons in a single day—bright sunshine in the morning, thunderstorms at noon, and freezing winds by evening.
Water resources on the Mongolian grassland are very unevenly distributed. Rivers and lakes are like pearls scattered across the grassland, dotted in the green ocean. The most famous are the Argun River and the Kherlen River, which provide precious water sources for the grassland herders. Many lakes are also scattered across the grassland, with the largest being Lake Uvs, a saltwater lake with an area exceeding 3,000 square kilometers, equivalent to the size of more than ten West Lakes.
On this land, various plants and animals grow and live. Wild antelope run in groups across the grassland, prairie wolves howl in the distance, and eagles soar in the sky. The cattle, sheep, horses, and camels raised by herders are their main property and means of livelihood. In spring, herders hold the Naadam Festival to celebrate the beginning of the new year, holding wrestling, horse racing, and archery competitions, with the entire grassland immersed in a joyful atmosphere.
The residents of the Mongolian grassland are all nomadic peoples. Unlike us who live in fixed houses, they live in mobile dwellings called "yurts." Yurts look like round tents, made of white wool felt and wooden frames. Building a yurt takes only a few hours, and dismantling and moving it is also very convenient. When the grass in one place is eaten up, herders pack up their yurts, ride horses, and drive cattle and sheep to find new pastures.
The interior arrangement of yurts is also carefully planned. The door of the yurt always faces south to welcome the warm sunshine. The center of the yurt has a stove where herders cook and keep warm, with cooking smoke rising gracefully from the chimney on the roof. The interior of the yurt is divided into several areas: the north is a sacred place for Buddhist altars, the south is where young people rest, the east holds horse saddles, and the west stores cooking utensils. Each area has its specific function, reflecting the nomadic people's wisdom of adapting to nature and being practical.
On the Mongolian grassland, a boy was about to change the entire history of the world. His name was Temujin.
Temujin was born in 1162. It was a winter night with a raging snowstorm. When Temujin was born, it is said that he clutched a piece of blood-red clot in his tiny hand—the Mongols believed this was an auspicious sign of a hero's arrival. His father, Yesugei, was the chief of the Mongol Kiyad tribe. He named the newborn baby Temujin, meaning "blacksmith"—hoping he would be as strong as iron.
Temujin's childhood was not happy. When he was only nine years old, his father Yesugei was poisoned to death. It turned out that Yesugei was killed by poisoned wine from the enemy Tatars during a battle. When the tragic news came, Temujin's family fell into great difficulty. According to the grassland customs, without a man as the head of the family, this household lost its support, and people from other tribes left one after another, no longer associating with them.
To make things worse, enemies, worried that Temujin would seek revenge when he grew up, actually sent people to capture him. Temujin had to begin a wandering life. He once hid in the grass, lying motionless without even daring to breathe loudly, afraid of being discovered by enemies. Once, he was captured by enemies from the Tayichiud tribe, displayed in wooden stocks at various camps. But the clever Temujin took advantage of the guard's negligence and successfully escaped.
During those difficult days, Temujin's family was extremely poor. They had no cattle or sheep, no property, and could only fill their stomachs by fishing and digging for wild vegetables. Once, the young Temujin bravely fought with fierce thieves to protect the family's only white horse, nearly losing his life. Another time, he used the gyrfalcon left by his father to catch a lark, and the whole family finally ate a meal of meat.
Hardship did not defeat Temujin; instead, it made him stronger and braver. He learned to survive in harsh environments, tempered his unyielding will, and more importantly, he displayed outstanding leadership qualities from a young age. One winter, eight of Temujin's horses were stolen by thieves. The young Temujin rode a black-maned yellow horse with a docked tail, tracking through snowstorms for six days and si
