Welcome to the 3D Printing Kingdom
---
This is the story of a very special little guest from a distant future.
*That day at dusk, a strange light suddenly appeared in the sky. Colorful rays intertwined together, like someone had painted a rainbow painting in the sky.*
*That was Xiao Chuang! A little robot from the future world!*
*Xiao Chuang's appearance looked like an adorable little doll, only about a palm's width tall. His round body was made of a special color-changing material: usually a light blue, but when he was happy, it would turn into a warm orange; when he was thinking, it would turn into a smart purple.*
*His head was round, with two small antennae on top, each with a glowing ball at the tip—those were his "Antenna Baby Lights," used for receiving signals and transmitting information. His eyes were two small screens that would blink at you, as if trying hard to understand this new and strange world.*
*On Xiao Chuang's chest was a small window displaying a beating heart—this was his "Core Chip," storing all his memories and programs. Next to the window were four small buttons, colored red, blue, green, and yellow, just like the buttons on a game controller.*
最神奇的是,小创的背后有两个小小的螺旋桨,安静的时候可以收起来变成背包,但当他需要飞的时候,螺旋桨就会轻轻旋转,带他飞向任何想去的地方!*Most magically, Xiao Chuang had two small propellers on his back that could fold up into a backpack when idle, but when he needed to fly, the propellers would gently spin, taking him anywhere he wanted to go!*
*Xiao Chuang blinked his eyes and looked around. He saw tall buildings, cars driving on the roads, pedestrians walking by in a hurry.*
*Is this really the 21st century? Xiao Chuang said to himself, his voice as clear as wind chimes. Its completely different from my hometown, the Printing Kingdom!*
The Magical Printing Kingdom
*Xiao Chuang's hometown is called the "Printing Kingdom"—that's an absolutely unimaginable wonderful world!*
*In the Printing Kingdom, everything is made by a magical machine called a "3D Printer."*
Simply put, a 3D printer is like an incredibly powerful "magic box." As long as you tell it what you want, it can "create" it for you!*
*Xiao Chuang told the little boy: "In our kingdom, my house was printed, some of my toys were printed, and even a lot of our food can be printed!"*
*The little boy's jaw dropped in amazement: "What? Food can be printed too? Isn't that like magic?"*
*Xiao Chuang laughed, his eyes turning into two curved crescent moons: "Not magic! Its technology. In our place, everyone learns 3D printing knowledge from a young age, just as important as your Chinese and Math classes!"*
2D vs 3D: Drawing and Building Blocks
*To help the little boy understand what 3D printing is, Xiao Chuang decided to explain using a vivid metaphor.*
*Do you know? Long, long ago, your humans already started using a technology called '2D printing.' Xiao Chuang said.*
*2D printing? The little boy tilted his head and asked, What is that?*
*2D printing is like... drawing a picture on a piece of white paper! Xiao Chuang blinked. You can draw whatever you want. It can be a little flower, a little grass, a little dog, or even yourself!*
*Xiao Chuang reached into his backpack—the one with the propellers—and pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, drawing a smiling face on it.*
*Look, this is the result of 2D printing. Xiao Chuang held up the paper. It only has length and width, it's flat.*
*The little boy looked at the paper, then at Xiao Chuang's round body: "Then what about 3D printing?"*
*3D printing is like... building with blocks! Xiao Chuang blinked mysteriously.*
Three-Dimensional Space: Length, Width, and Height
*Xiao Chuang picked up a few small stones from the ground and excitedly began to explain.*
*Look at this paper, he pointed to the drawing he just made, it can only get bigger or smaller in two directions—left and right, forward and backward. But it can't get thicker, right?*
*The little boy nodded: "Yeah, paper is just a thin layer."*
(Height)!”
*But blocks are different! Xiao Chuang held up one small stone and stacked another on top. Blocks can be stacked upward, getting higher and higher. Look, this block has length, width, and height!*
*Xiao Chuang excitedly turned around in a circle: "In 3D printing, we call objects with length, width, and height 'three-dimensional objects' or 'solid objects.' 2D has only two dimensions, so it's called '2D'; 3D has three dimensions, so it's called '3D'!"*
*The little boy suddenly understood: "So that's how it is! 2D is like drawing on paper, 3D is like building things with blocks!"*
*Exactly right! Xiao Chuang jumped for joy, almost bumping into the little boy's nose. You're such a smart child!*
What is 3D Printing?
*Xiao Chuang cleared his throat and began to explain seriously—although his "throat" was actually a small speaker.*
*The formal name for 3D printing is 'Additive Manufacturing,' and it's different from the 'subtractive manufacturing' you used before.*
*Subtractive manufacturing? The little boy didn't understand again.*
*Subtractive manufacturing is like carving. Xiao Chuang gestured with his finger in the air. For example, if you want to make a little wooden horse, a craftsman first finds a big piece of wood, then uses a knife to gradually cut away the excess parts, until only the little horse shape remains. During this process, the wood gets less and less, so it's called 'subtractive.'*
*Xiao Chuang paused, his eyes turning into two small light bulbs: But 3D printing is different! 3D printing grows things from nothing, layer by layer, just like building blocks stacking higher and higher. Each layer added makes the object taller; stacking many, many layers creates a complete three-dimensional object. Since the material is 'added' little by little, it's called 'Additive Manufacturing'!*
