It was an ordinary Wednesday afternoon. Sunlight streamed through the curtains into the room as Xiaoming lay sprawled across his desk, feeling bored. Today's homework was already finished, and he'd gotten tired of watching cartoons on TV. He had nothing to do to pass this dreary afternoon.
就在这时，他的平板电脑突然发出了一阵清脆的“叮咚”声。
Just then, his tablet made a clear "ding-dong" sound.
小明抬起头，发现屏幕上弹出了一封新邮件的通知。这本不稀奇稀奇，可是邮件的标题却让他瞪大了眼睛——
Xiaoming lifted his head and saw a new email notification pop up on his screen. This wasn't unusual in itself, but the email's subject line made his eyes widen—

Xiaoming's heart skipped a beat. 2045? That was over twenty years in the future! An email from the future? How was this possible? He rubbed his eyes, making sure he wasn't seeing things, then tapped on the email with trembling fingers.
邮件里只有一段文字和一张奇怪的图片。文字写道：
The email contained only a paragraph of text and a strange picture. The text read:

Let's begin this wonderful adventure together!* > > *——来自未来的小明* > *— Xiaoming from the Future*
读完这封信，小明的脑海里冒出了无数个问号。元宇宙？那是什么地方？未来的自己怎么会给自己写信？一连串的疑惑在他心里翻涌。
After reading the letter, countless questions popped into Xiaoming's mind. The Metaverse? What kind of place was that? How could his future self send him a letter? A cascade of confusion swirled in his heart.
就在他疑惑不解的时候，屏幕上的图片突然动了起来。图片里展现的是一个绚丽多彩的世界——高楼大厦在空中漂浮，人们穿着奇特的服装在天空中飞翔，各种奇异的植物发出五彩斑斓的光芒。
Just as he was puzzled, the picture on the screen suddenly came alive. The image showed a colorful world—tall buildings floating in the sky, people flying through the air in strange outfits, and various exotic plants emitting dazzling lights.
小明看得入了迷，情不自禁地把脸凑近了屏幕。就在这时——
Xiaoming was completely captivated, instinctively leaning his face closer to the screen. At that moment—
“嗖——”
一道耀眼的光芒从屏幕中喷涌而出，将小明整个人都笼罩了进去。当光芒消散的时候，小明发现自己已经不在自己的房间里了！
A dazzling light burst forth from the screen, engulfing Xiaoming completely. When the light faded, Xiaoming found that he was no longer in his room!
他站在一片宽阔的广场上，头顶是湛蓝的天空（虽然他知道这一定是假的），脚下是柔软的金色沙地。四周矗立着各种各样的建筑，有的像水晶宫殿，有的像森林小屋，还有一些形状奇特得他说不上来名字。
He stood in a vast plaza, beneath a bright blue sky (though he knew it must be artificial), with soft golden sand beneath his feet. All around stood various buildings—some like crystal palaces, some like forest cottages, and others in such peculiar shapes he couldn't even name them.
“欢迎来到元宇宙！”
"Welcome to the Metaverse!"
一个声音在小明耳边响起。他转头一看，发现身边不知什么时候多了一个小精灵。小精灵有着透明的翅膀，浑身闪闪发光，还戴着一副小小的眼镜。
A voice sounded in his ear. He turned to find a small sprite that had appeared beside him. The sprite had translucent wings, sparkled all over, and wore a tiny pair of glasses.
“你是谁？”小明惊讶地问道。
"Who are you?" Xiaoming asked in surprise.
“我是你的元宇宙向导，名叫小灵！”小精灵眨眨眼睛，自我介绍道，“未来的你让我来接你，并带你认识这个神奇的世界。现在，让我来告诉你，什么是元宇宙吧！”
"I'm your Metaverse guide, my name is Xiaoling!" the sprite blinked and introduced itself. "Your future self asked me to meet you and show you around this magical world. Now, let me tell you what the Metaverse is!"

小灵挥动了一下手中的魔法棒，周围的景象立刻发生了变化。广场消失了，取而代之的是一个巨大的电脑机房。
Xiaoling waved its magic wand, and the surrounding scenery instantly changed. The plaza vanished, replaced by a massive computer room.
小明看到无数台巨大的机器在运转，它们嗡嗡作响，发出蓝色的光芒。无数根线缆从机器上延伸出去，像蜘蛛网一样铺满了整个空间。
Xiaoming saw countless huge machines operating, humming and emitting blue light. Countless cables extended from the machines like spider webs, covering the entire space.
“你看到的这些，就是创造元宇宙的东西。”小灵解释道，“它们叫做服务器，是一些特别强大的电脑。”
"What you see here are the things that create the Metaverse," Xiaoling explained. "These are called servers—special, powerful computers."
小明好奇地打量着四周：“这些机器和元宇宙有什么关系呢？”
Xiaoming looked around curiously. "What's the connection between these machines and the Metaverse?"
小灵飞到小明面前，认真地说：“让我来给你打个比方吧。你玩过乐高积木吗？”
Xiaoling flew in front of Xiaoming and said seriously, "Let me give you an analogy. Have you ever played with LEGO blocks?"
“玩过！我最喜欢玩乐高了！”小明兴奋地回答。
"Of course! I love playing with LEGO!" Xiaoming answered excitedly.
“那你知道，乐高积木是怎么变成一座城堡或者一辆汽车的吗？”小灵继续问道。
"Then do you know how LEGO blocks become a castle or a car?" Xiaoling continued.
小明想了想：“是用很多很多小积木，一块一块地拼起来的！”
Xiaoming thought for a moment. "You use lots of little blocks and put them together piece by piece!"
“没错！”小灵满意地点点头，“服务器就像那些积木，只不过它们不是塑料做的，而是由电子和代码组成的。无数台服务器连接在一起，就形成了一个巨大的虚拟世界——这就是元宇宙！”
"Exactly right!" Xiaoling nodded approvingly. "Servers are like those building blocks, except instead of being made of plastic, they're made of electricity and code. Countless servers connected together form a massive virtual world—and that's the Metaverse!"
小明似乎有点明白了：“所以元宇宙就是一个用电脑创造出来的虚拟世界？”
Xiaoming seemed to understand a bit. "So the Metaverse is a virtual world created by computers?"
“完全正确！”小灵开心地拍起了小手，“你真是个聪明的孩子！元宇宙就是这样一个由电脑和互联网共同创造的虚拟世界。”
"Absolutely correct!" Xiaoling clapped its little hands happily. "You're such a smart child! The Metaverse is a virtual world created together by computers and the internet."
小灵又挥了挥魔法棒，周围的景象再次变化。这一次，小明发现自己站在了元宇宙的街道上。
Xiaoling waved its wand again, and the surroundings changed once more. This time, Xiaoming found himself standing on a street in the Metaverse.
街道两旁是各种各样的店铺和建筑。有卖魔法糖果的糖果店，有可以变身成任何动物的变形屋，还有一所正在上课的学校！街道上人来人往，有像小灵一样的精灵，有可爱的卡通动物，还有和小明一样的普通人类。
The streets were lined with various shops and buildings. There was a candy store selling magical sweets, a transformation house where you could become any animal, and even a school with classes in session! The streets bustled with people—sprites like Xiaoling, cute cartoon animals, and ordinary humans like Xiaoming.
“在元宇宙里，你可以做任何事情。”小灵骄傲地说，“你可以玩耍、学习、社交，还可以创造全新的东西！”
"In the Metaverse, you can do anything," Xiaoling said proudly. "You can play, learn, socialize, and even create entirely new things!"
小明兴奋地东张西望，眼睛都看不过来了。这里的一切都太神奇了！
Xiaoming looked around excitedly, his eyes couldn't take it all in. Everything here was so amazing!

Xiaoming walked through the streets with Xiaoling when something occurred to him. "Xiaoling, the video games I usually play are also virtual worlds, right? What's different about the Metaverse?"
小灵赞许地点点头：“你问了一个非常好的问题！让我来给你解释一下。”
Xiaoling nodded approvingly. "You've asked a really good question! Let me explain."
小灵带着小明来到了一棵巨大的知识树下，从树上摘下了两个闪闪发光的光球。
Xiaoling brought Xiaoming to a giant tree of knowledge and plucked two glowing orbs from it.
“这个光球代表普通游戏，那个光球代表元宇宙。”小灵说，“让我们来看看它们有什么不同吧。”
"This orb represents regular games, and that one represents the Metaverse," Xiaoling said. "Let's see what the differences are."
说着，小灵把第一个光球抛向空中。光球瞬间展开，变成了一幅巨大的画面。
With that, Xiaoling tossed the first orb into the air. The orb instantly expanded into a giant picture.
小明看到了熟悉的画面——那是他最喜欢玩的赛车游戏！
Xiaoming saw a familiar scene—the racing game he loved to play!
“你看，在普通游戏里，”小灵解释道，“你只能做游戏设计师规定好的事情。比如在这个赛车游戏里，你只能开车、比赛、升级赛车。你不能做别的事情，比如走进一家咖啡馆喝杯饮料，或者和别的玩家一起去看一场电影。”
