The Moon, Our Old Friend
---

Every Night When Darkness Falls
The night deepens, and the sky outside your window gradually changes from golden yellow to deep blue, like a vast dark silk spreading out. The sun has gone down to rest, and the stars haven't fully woken up yet. Then, a gentle friend appears quietly in the sky—it's the moon.
Have you noticed that the moon appears at different times each day? Sometimes it looks like a curved eyebrow, and we call it a "crescent moon." Sometimes it looks like half a round watermelon, and we call it a "half moon." Sometimes it's round and bright, like a golden plate, and we call it a "full moon." The moon is like this—it changes from a crescent to a full moon and back to a crescent roughly every 29.5 days. Scientists call this the "phases of the moon," as if the moon is changing into different outfits each month, showing different kinds of beauty.
Imagine if the moon were a friend who could do magic tricks—then you could see its new look every month. In the first week, it's like a thin silver thread hanging in the sky; in the second week, it becomes a semicircle, like an orange that Mom cut in half; in the third week, it gets rounder and brighter; and by the fourth week—wow! It becomes a perfect big disk! Then it starts to shrink again, turning back into a crescent, preparing for a new look next month.
The ocean tides on Earth are influenced by the moon's gravitational pull, just like when you shake a bottle of water hard, the water sloshes back and forth. The ocean, gently pulled by the moon, rises and falls with the tides. That's why fishermen living by the sea always watch the moon to plan when to go out to sea. The moon isn't just beautiful—it's quietly helping life on Earth!

The Little Rabbit on the Moon
In ancient Chinese legends, there lives a cute little rabbit on the moon. Legend has it that long, long ago, a rabbit, a fox, and a monkey were good friends. One day, an immortal disguised as a poor old man came to the forest and asked the three little animals for food. The monkey shared its fruits with the old man, the fox gave the fish it caught to the old man, but what about the little rabbit? It had nothing—just a little bit of grass.
The little rabbit was anxious. It thought and thought, and finally decided to burn itself so the old man could eat its meat. It jumped into the fire—but the immortal was moved by the little rabbit's kindness and brought it to the moon. So now, in the shadows on the moon, we can still see that little rabbit's silhouette! It's always been making medicine on the moon, using magical herbs from the moon to create powerful potions that help all the sick people in the world.
Japan has a similar story called "The Moon Rabbit." Legend has it that there is a Jade Rabbit on the moon,捣米做饼每一天,它都 on the moon, making rice cakes to feed the immortals in heaven. The Jade Rabbit's kindness and diligence made it the most beloved little animal on the moon.
Now, when you look up at the bright moon in the night sky, take a close look at the moon's surface—do those dark markings look like a little rabbit? Legend says that kind little rabbit is working away on the moon! Maybe you can make a wish to the moon and let the little rabbit help make it come true!
> > Is there really a "rabbit" shape on the moon? Those dark markings are actually "lunar seas," which is the name astronomers gave them. The largest one is called the "Ocean of Storms," and there are also the "Sea of Rains," "Sea of Tranquility," and more. The Ocean of Storms is about 4 million square kilometers—larger than a quarter of China's total land area!

The Moonlight of the Poet
Over a thousand years ago, in China's Tang Dynasty, there was a very famous poet named Li Bai. Grandpa Li Bai loved the moon so much that more than 200 of his poems mention the moon! He often drank wine and wrote poetry under the moonlight, imagining himself becoming friends with the moon.
Li Bai's "Thoughts in the Still of the Night" is a famous poem everyone knows:
> > I raise my head to gaze at the bright moon, > > I lower my head to think of my hometown.
This poem means: The poet raises his head to look at the moon and thinks of his beautiful hometown far away. The moon is so round and bright that it makes everyone away from home feel homesick. Grandpa Li Bai looked at the moon and thought of his hometown and family.
There's another poem called "The Moon's Journey," where Li Bai wrote:
> > When I was young, I didn't know the moon, > > I called it a white jade plate.
Grandpa Li Bai said that when he was young, he didn't recognize the moon and thought it was a white jade plate in the sky! Little ones, have you ever had an experience like this? Seeing the round moon and thinking it looks like a plate, a mirror, or a round cookie?
The most romantic poem by Poet Immortal Li Bai is "Drinking Alone Under the Moon":
> > Among the flowers, a pot of wine, > > Drinking alone with no companion near. > > I raise my cup to invite the bright moon, > > Together with my shadow, we become three.
This poem tells us: The poet drinks wine among the flowers, with no one to accompany him. So he raises his cup and invites the moon to drink with him. The moon, his shadow, and the poet himself—the three of them drink, dance, and chat together. How joyful!
Can you also imagine—if the moon were your friend, what would you want to say to it? What fun things would you want to invite it to do? Maybe you can be like Grandpa Li Bai and raise a glass of water or juice, and say to the moon: "Moon friend, let's make a toast!"
> > Recite Li Bai's "Thoughts in the Still of the Night" with Mom and Dad! Then go to the window or balcony together and look for the moon in the sky. Ask Mom and Dad if they also learned this poem when they were little.
