*Chapter 1: Why the Earth Needs Us to Act*
---
Now, imagine you're enjoying a hearty dinner. Delicious food enters your body, passes through your digestive system, nutrients are absorbed, and waste is expelled. This is a perfect cycle—your body takes in energy, releases waste, and continues the next cycle. The Earth works similarly. Our blue planet "digests" various substances from human activities every day: air, water, food, energy, and things we'd rather not mention but cannot avoid—garbage.
But here's the problem. If a person goes a full week without bowel movements, without processing the body's waste, what happens? Bloating, abdominal pain, toxin accumulation, even more serious health problems. This is common sense we can all understand. So what happens if the Earth operates at overload for an extended period, unable to digest the massive amounts of waste humans produce?
The answer lies in those startling numbers around us.
*When Numbers Speak*
Every year, more than 2 billion tons of municipal solid waste are generated globally. What does this number mean? If we load this garbage into standard 40-foot shipping containers, placed end to end, they could circle the Earth's equator 25 times. 25 times. Imagine that scene—not athletes running on a track, but piles of garbage, like a gray giant snake, tightly coiling around our Earth.
On the other side of the world, in China, a land of 9.6 million square kilometers, annual urban household waste production has exceeded 250 million tons. This number is still growing at 8% to 10% annually. Without effective measures, by 2035, China's annual garbage production could exceed 400 million tons. 400 million tons. This weight is equivalent to 40 million adult African elephants combined, or the weight of 8 Mount Everests—if all the garbage were compressed into a single cube.
These are not abstract numbers. Behind them are real scenes: garbage piles stacked mountain-high at the edges of cities, plastic fragments floating in rivers, villages surrounded by garbage, scavengers searching through garbage mounds for recyclable items. These scenes are constantly playing out on the land where we live, and they're getting worse.
*Earth's "Digestive System" Is Failing*
The Earth has its own "digestive system." Forests absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen; oceans absorb heat and regulate climate; soil decomposes organic matter and recycles nutrients. These natural processes maintain Earth's ecological balance day after day. However, when the waste we produce exceeds what Earth's natural digestion can handle, this "digestive system" begins to malfunction.
Let us understand this problem in a more concrete way. The Earth can naturally purify approximately 3 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually. And in 2019, what was global carbon dioxide emissions? The answer is 37 billion tons. What does this mean? The Earth can only "digest" about 8% of greenhouse gas emissions each year. The remaining 92% of carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere, like a thick blanket, wrapped tighter and tighter, making the Earth increasingly hot.
The oceans are sending similar distress signals. Approximately 8 million tons of plastic waste flow into the oceans globally each year. What does this mean? It's like dumping a garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute. If this trend continues, by 2050, the weight of plastic in the oceans could exceed the weight of all fish combined. Imagine, in the future, our children go to the aquarium and see not colorful schools of fish, but floating plastic bottles and plastic bags—isn't this humanity's greatest tragedy?
The soil is equally overwhelmed. Of the solid waste generated globally each year, approximately 30% is eventually landfilled or dumped into natural environments. This garbage slowly decomposes in the soil, releasing harmful leachate and greenhouse gases, polluting groundwater sources and destroying soil ecology. Research shows that an ordinary plastic bottle takes 450 years to fully decompose. An aluminum can takes 200 years. A plastic bag takes 20 years. Yet human use of them typically lasts only 15 minutes.
This is not alarmist talk. This is a simple arithmetic problem: 15 minutes of use, 450 years to decompose. This ratio means that a plastic bag casually discarded by our generation will be inherited by our great-great-great-grandchildren's great-great-great-grandchildren—if humans still exist by then.
*Garbage Siege: A Crisis Around Us*
Perhaps you think these numbers, though alarming, are still far from your daily life. Then let's bring our perspective closer and see how the garbage problem specifically affects our daily lives.
Have you noticed how many garbage processing plants surround your city? Have you smelled the garbage odors drifting on the wind? Have you followed news about mass incidents caused by garbage processing problems? Among China's 668 cities, more than two-thirds face the dilemma of garbage siege. Landfills on the edges of cities are being built more and farther away, but they still can't keep up with the speed of garbage growth.
Around Beijing, there once was a landfill called Asuwei. This landfill, which began operations in 1994, was designed for a 15-year service life with planned daily processing of 2,000 tons of garbage. However, by 2019, it was actually processing more than 3,000 tons of garbage daily, far exceeding its design capacity. Every day, over 3,000 tons of garbage were dumped here, day after day, year after year. Residents around the landfill endured foul odors and swarms of mosquitoes year-round. Children's outdoor activity time was compressed, and the elderly's respiratory disease rates increased significantly. This didn't happen in distant Africa or war-torn Middle East. This happened in Beijing, the capital of our nation.
In Shanghai, in 2019, regulations dubbed the "strictest in history" for garbage classification were implemented. In the firs
