Chapter 1: Chang'an – The Eastern Starting Point of the Silk Road

*When the first rays of morning sunlight fell upon the walls of Chang'an, the entire capital awakened from its slumber. Outside the city gates, merchant caravans from distant lands formed long queues; inside the city, the bustling markets were already filled with the cries of vendors. The air was filled with the fragrance of spices, the aroma of tea, and exotic scents carried from the Western Regions. This was Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty—a magnificent city connecting East and West, the very place where the Silk Road journey began.*

The Birth and Glory of Chang'an
Have you ever imagined a city built over two thousand years ago that could accommodate over a million people? Does that sound as incredible as a magical city from a fairy tale? But during the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an was just such an astonishing mega-city!
The location of Chang'an was no random choice. As early as over 2,000 years ago, Liu Bang, the founding emperor of the Western Han Dynasty, established his capital here. Our ancestors were extremely particular about choosing capital locations, considering many factors: whether the land was fertile enough to grow enough grain to feed the people; whether the terrain was strategic enough to defend against enemy invasions; whether transportation was convenient enough to maintain connections with various regions. The Guanzhong Plain where Chang'an was located happened to satisfy all these conditions—it was bordered by the Wei River to the north and backed by the Qinling Mountains to the south. It had natural barriers for defense and rivers for transporting supplies. It was truly the perfect location for building a capital!
By the time of the Tang Dynasty, Chang'an had entered its most glorious era. Tang Dynasty emperors continuously expanded and beautified the city, making it the largest, most prosperous, and most populous capital in the world at that time. According to historians' estimates, the population of Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty exceeded one million—a truly astronomical figure! Even today, many medium and small cities haven't reached this population size.
Imagine standing on the Hanyuan Hall in Daming Palace, the center of Chang'an, looking far into the distance, and witnessing the magnificent scenery of the entire city: orderly streets arranged like a chessboard, the bustling East and West Markets crowded with people, majestic towers standing at regular intervals along the city walls, and sparkling moats encircling the city outside. Even by today's standards, such a scene would leave you in awe!
The Unique City Layout
The layout of Chang'an was fascinating. It employed the unique Chinese ancient system called "Fang-Li System" (坊里制). The entire city was divided into orderly squares by straight and wide streets, with each square being a "Fang" or "Li"—you can imagine them as today's residential communities or neighborhoods. However, during the Tang Dynasty, each Fang-Li had its own walls and gates. The gates were open during the day for people to pass through and closed at night to ensure safety.
It is said there were 108 Fang-Lis within Chang'an, arranged in perfect order, forming a giant chessboard-like pattern. If you could view Chang'an from high above, you would be amazed by the urban planning wisdom of the ancients. This meticulous layout not only made the city appear well-ordered but also greatly facilitated city management and residents' daily lives.
The streets of Chang'an were also quite remarkable. The widest street was called the "Zhuque Avenue" (朱雀大街), which was as wide as 150 meters—wider than the main roads in many modern cities! Zhuque Avenue was the central axis of Chang'an, extending from the Zhuque Gate of the Imperial City all the way to the Mingde Gate of the Outer City. Walking on such a wide street, you would never feel crowded. No wonder the ancients said it was "red dust flying"—the street was so bustling with people and traffic that dust was kicked up everywhere!
The northern part of the city was where the imperial palace and government offices were located—a solemn political center of the entire empire. The palace was divided into three parts: Taiji Palace, Daming Palace, and Xingqing Palace. Among these, Daming Palace was where the emperor conducted government affairs and received foreign envoys, and it was the most magnificent. The southern part of the city was where ordinary people lived and commercial activities took place. The famous East Market and West Market were located here.
The Guardians of the City
The walls of Chang'an were tall and sturdy, with deep and wide moats surrounding them outside the walls. On the walls stood tall towers at regular intervals, allowing soldiers to keep watch and defend. It's said that the walkway along the entire wall was wide enough for several horses to run side by side!
Guarding soldiers patrolled day and night, protecting the safety of the million residents within the city. Every morning, when the city gates opened, the guards would beat drums in unison, announcing the start of a new day. At this moment, merchants, farmers, craftsmen, and tourists from all directions would surge into or out of the city, and Chang'an's bustling day would officially begin.
> > Chang'an had 12 city gates in total, each guarded by soldiers. The most famous was Mingde Gate, the main southern gate of Chang'an and one of the busiest gates. Thousands of people entered and exited through it every day, sometimes having to wait in line!

The Bustling East and West Markets
In Chang'an, the busiest places were undoubtedly the "East Market" and "West Market." These two markets were like two brilliant pearls, set on both sides of Chang'an's central axis, radiating the brilliance of commercial civilization.
The East Market was located in the northeast corner of the city, mainly serving royalty, nobility, and high-ranking officials. The goods sold here were primarily high-
