Our first stop is a magical stretch of land. If you pull out a map of the world and look at the middle section of the American continents—known as Central America—you will discover a narrow strip of land that looks just like a green, enchanted finger, reaching quietly from north to south between two great oceans. This "finger" connects North America to the north and reaches toward South America to the south, and it is embraced on both sides by the mighty Pacific Ocean and the brilliant blue Caribbean Sea.

More specifically, their homeland spanned across four modern nations: the southern region of Mexico, all of Guatemala, the eastern coast of Belize, and western Honduras. Snow near the equator! Tikal, one of the most celebrated ancient Maya cities, rises in Guatemala, its pyramids reaching higher than the spires of many modern cathedrals.

When viewed from above, the Great Blue Hole looks exactly like a giant, deep-blue eye set into light green waters—mysterious and magnificent! The Maya discovered these waters long ago, sailing small boats through the coral reefs, fishing and trading, living lives shaped by the sea.

They are like sparkling stars scattered across the night sky of history, shining brightly in different eras and different places. Among all these ancient civilizations, four are universally recognized by historians and scientists around the world as the "superstars"—they are called the "Four Great Ancient Civilizations of the World." These four shining stars are: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Babylon, Ancient China, and the one we are getting to know now—the Maya Civilization!
