Chapter 1: The Dawn of Agents — From Turing Test to Intelligent Assistants
On an autumn afternoon in 1950, in an office at Cambridge University's mathematics department, Alan Turing was staring at a bulky machine, contemplating a seemingly simple question that would reshape human history: Can machines think? This question may seem self-evident today, but in an era when computers had just been born, it was like dropping a stone into a still lake, creating the most profound ripples in the field of artificial intelligence.
Turing, being a mathematician rather than a philosopher, designed an elegant experiment to answer this question—the Turing Test. In this test, a human judge communicates with two entities via text: one is a real human, and the other is a computer program. If the judge cannot reliably distinguish which is which, the computer passes the test and is deemed "intelligent."
This seemingly simple experimental design actually laid the foundation for more than seventy years of AI development. It transformed the abstract philosophical concept of "intelligence" into a concrete, operational test criterion. More importantly, it established a core belief: if a system can converse, reason, and respond like a human, we have reason to call it "intelligent."
However, in his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," Turing not only proposed this test but also made a startling prediction: he believed that by 2000, a computer could fool human judges with 70% probability in five-minute conversations. Although this prediction was overly optimistic, it demonstrated Turing's firm confidence in machine intelligence.

The Birth of AI: The Dartmouth Summer
Let us leap forward to 1956. At Dartmouth College, a small town in New Hampshire, USA, a conference that would change the course of human civilization was being organized. This six-to-eight-week academic workshop brought together ten of the most outstanding young scientists of the time, from fields including mathematics, neuroscience, and electronic engineering.
The organizers of this conference included John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Claude Shannon, and Nathaniel Rochester. Rochester, who worked at Chrysler Corporation, designed a famous memo proposing that a group of scientists spend the summer exploring how to make machines "form concepts and abstractions" so they could "reach levels of competence comparable to adults in many respects."
When McCarthy coined the conference name, he created the term "Artificial Intelligence." This concise and powerful term quickly became the official name of this emerging field. Interestingly, however, when writing that memo in 1955, McCarthy and Minsky did not actually use the term "artificial intelligence." They initially used terms like "automata studies" and "complex information processing."
In July 1956, computer scientists from across the country arrived at Dartmouth one after another. Minsky later recalled having extremely high expectations for the project, believing it would solve the core problems of AI within a month. Of course, reality soon gave these young people a profound lesson—the challenges of AI were far more difficult than anyone had imagined.
Nevertheless, the Dartmouth conference marked the official birth of artificial intelligence as an independent field of study. Although those dream-filled young scientists did not solve the nature of intelligence in two months, they lit a flame that would illuminate humanity's path of exploring the essence of cognition for the next seventy-plus years.

The Golden Age of Symbolic AI
Following the Dartmouth conference, AI entered its first golden age—the era of Symbolic AI, also known as the "classical AI" era. The core idea of this era was simple yet elegant: intelligence could be achieved through symbol manipulation, just as mathematicians reason using symbols.
In this paradigm, knowledge and reasoning were formalized into a complete system of rules and logic. For example, if we wanted a computer to understand that "all humans are mortal, Socrates is human," then the computer should be able to deduce that "Socrates is mortal." This logic-based reasoning approach was called "logical reasoning" or "deductive reasoning."
During this era, many exciting research achievements emerged. In 1958, Frank Rosenblatt invented the "Perceptron" at Cornell University's Aeronautical Laboratory—this was the world's first machine capable of "learning." The perceptron's working principle was inspired by biological neural networks, allowing it to adjust its parameters based on input data and feedback to learn to recognize simple patterns.
However, the perceptron's glory was soon overshadowed. In 1969, Minsky and Seymour Papert published the book "Perceptrons," which mathematically proved a discouraging conclusion: single-layer perceptrons could not solve simple nonlinear problems, such as determining whether a two-dimensional shape was connected. This flaw, known as the "XOR problem," became an important reason why connectionist (neural network) approaches stalled.
Meanwhile, symbolic AI achieved many remarkable accomplishments. In 1964, Daniel Bobrow developed the STUDENT system, which could solve high school-level algebraic word problems. Imagine—a computer program that could read and understand the description of a word problem, then formulate and solve the equations. How amazing was that sixty years ago?
In 1965, Eliza Złot at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) developed ELIZA—the world's first chatbot. ELIZA could mimic a psychotherapist conversing with users, and its most famous version was called "DOCTOR.
