Chapter 1: Two Cosmic Languages: Getting to Know Our Sky
---
At night falls and stars twinkle, when you look up at the night sky, have you ever wondered: In that vast and boundless universe, what secrets are these twinkling lights trying to tell us?
In the East of Earth, there was a Chinese boy named Brown; in the West of Earth, there was a Greek girl named Star. They had never met before, but because of a wonderful space adventure, they became the best of friends.
That was an ordinary night. Brown was looking up at the stars beneath the walls of the Forbidden City in Beijing. At the same time, beside the ruins of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, Star was gazing at the same sky. Just as they were both lost in their stargazing reverie, a mysterious light descended from the heavens, sweeping them both into an interstellar journey spanning East and West.
When they opened their eyes, they found themselves floating inside a small, glowing spaceship. Through the transparent walls of the spacecraft, they saw that beautiful blue planet—Earth.
"What a beautiful planet!" Star exclaimed.
"That's our home—Earth!" Brown said excitedly, "Look, that's Asia, that's Europe, Africa is over there..."
Star observed this blue planet carefully: "It's interesting that although we all live on the same planet, we look at the stars in completely different ways."
Brown nodded: "Yes, my ancestors used twelve kinds of animals to mark the years, they called these animals 'Chinese zodiac'. What about your ancestors?"
Star blinked her eyes and gave a mysterious smile: "My ancestors had a similar method! But instead of animals, they used twelve zodiac signs to mark the month of your birth."
Just then, the spaceship's intelligent assistant—a floating little star—spoke up: "Welcome, young explorers from the East and the West! You are about to begin a special journey to explore two ancient and magical cosmic languages. Let me tell you more about the stories of 'Fate Studies (Mingli Xue)' and 'Western Astrology'."
The Same Sky, Different Languages
When we look up at the night sky, we see countless twinkling stars. In ancient China, these stars were organized into a complex system, the most important of which was the "Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions"—like twenty-eight great families in the sky, each with its own name and story.
Along the Mediterranean coast in ancient Greece, people used their imagination to connect these stars into patterns, creating the constellations we know today. Greeks believed that each constellation represented a mythological figure or animal, performing ancient heroic stories in the sky.
These two systems may seem different, but they have surprising similarities. Let me show you with a small table:

Seeing this, you might ask: Why did both the East and the West develop the number "12" independently? Is this an amazing coincidence, or is there some mysterious law in the universe?
The little star interjected: "Actually, in ancient civilizations, '12' is a very important number. There are about 12 months in a year, 12 hours in half a day, 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, and 12 signs in the Western zodiac. Isn't that magical?"

The spaceship slowly sailed toward a region glittering with starlight, which was the most beautiful Chinese night sky. The little star pointed to one particularly bright star and said: "Brown, let me tell you the story of your ancestors."
Legend of the Chinese Zodiac: The Wonderful Selection of Twelve Animals
Long, long ago, in ancient China, there was a magical legend about the origin of the Chinese zodiac.
It is said that the Jade Emperor—the highest ruler in heaven—decided to select the twelve most excellent animals from the earth to mark the change of years with their names. The selection method was a special animal race.
The news spread throughout the animal kingdom, and all the animals were excited, eagerly preparing. Cats and mice were neighbors and good friends, and they both wanted to participate in this grand event.
But cats had a big problem—they loved sleeping too much! They were worried they'd oversleep and miss the registration. So they found the clever mouse to discuss: "Dear mouse, you wake up so early every day, could you wake me up tomorrow morning?"
The mouse's eyes rolled, readily agreed: "Of course! We're good friends!"
The next morning, when it was still dark, the mouse woke up. It looked at the sleeping cat and thought to itself: "In this race, I want to win! If I wake up the cat, it will definitely compete with me for first place." So the mouse quietly got up and set off alone on the road to the competition, never waking the cat.
Thus, the cat missed the race by oversleeping and from then on became enemies with the mouse. That's why to this day, when cats see mice, they chase them.
The race began. All kinds of animals ran forward with all their might:
- **Old ox** (Ox) had been quietly plowing, with a steady character. Although not the fastest runner, its steps were firm, moving forward steadily.
- **Tiger** (Tiger) was fierce and majestic, its roar shaking the mountains and forests. It led the way with powerful explosive force.
- **Rabbit** (Rabbit) was small and agile. Although running wasn't its strength, it found a clever way—jumping forward by using the tiger's back.
