Chapter 1: The Twilight of Rome: The Apennine Peninsula After the Empire's Collapse
On the cold morning of September 4, 476 AD, the army of the Germanic general Odoacer surrounded the imperial palace in Ravenna, outside Rome. This military commander from the Scirian tribe, originally a low-ranking officer in the Western Roman army, now held the power of life and death over the entire Western Roman Empire. The deposed last emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was only a 14-year-old boy. According to the later historian Procopius, when Odoacer’s soldiers broke into his bedroom, the child was still playing with wooden soldier toys. Odoacer did not kill him, but gave him a pension of 6,000 solidi (Byzantine gold coins) a year and sent him to a rural estate in Campania to live out his days in peace—the crown that had once symbolized the highest power of the Roman Empire was ultimately exchanged for the decent life of a country squire. There was no cheer, no protest at the scene. Odoacer’s soldiers came from different Germanic tribes; they did not care at all about the “Roman emperor’s” succession system, only recognizing Odoacer as the leader who led them to victory and plunder. In their eyes, the so-called “Western Roman Empire” was just a name that paid their salaries and gave them battles to fight; now that the name was gone, they still followed Odoacer to make a living.
This deposition was not an accidental military coup, but the inevitable result of half a century of barbarian invasions of the Western Roman Empire. Since the 4th century, to cope with the pressure of the Huns in the north, large numbers of Germanic tribes have poured into the borders of the Roman Empire. Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, and Franks flooded into the empire’s territory like tides. The Roman army had long lost its former combat effectiveness; most soldiers were barbarian mercenaries who were only loyal to the paymaster, with almost no loyalty to Rome. In 410, the Visigothic leader Alaric breached the city of Rome for the first time, looting and killing for three days and three nights. At that time, Roman residents thought the end of the world had come, and the Christian theologian St. Augustine wrote *The City of God* to comfort them, saying that although secular Rome was destroyed, the City of God was eternal. In 452, the Hunnic leader Attila led his army to invade Italy, looting prosperous cities such as Milan and Aquileia. Residents of Aquileia fled to the lagoon in the northern Adriatic Sea to escape the slaughter, building stilt houses on the piles, which was the prototype of the later city of Venice.
> [!INFO] Trivia: The Later Life of Romulus Augustulus > There is still controversy in the academic community about the final fate of this last emperor. One account says he was sent to an estate near Naples in 476 and died in 507, living to his 40s; another account says he was later conscripted by the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great to fight against the Eastern Roman Empire and died on the battlefield. His tombstone has never been found, and his later life, like the Western Roman Empire, disappeared into the mist of history.
The Apennines Under Barbarian Hooves
After Odoacer deposed the emperor, he did not establish his own dynasty; he only submitted to the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno in Constantinople, nominally a vassal of the Eastern Roman Empire, but actually ruling the entire Italian peninsula. But Odoacer’s rule lasted only 17 years. In 493, the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great led his army into Italy, killed Odoacer, and established the Ostrogothic Kingdom, ruling Italy for nearly half a century. Subsequently, Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I, in order to recover the lost territories of the Western Roman Empire, sent the famous general Belisarius to attack Italy. This war lasted from 535 to 554, a full 19 years, destroying Italian cities once again. Rome’s population dropped from 50,000 before the war to less than 10,000, and the once prosperous metropolis became a desolate ruin.
Cities in Ruins
The once-glorious city of Rome was unrecognizable by the 6th century. At its peak, Rome had a population of more than 1 million, with the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Senate, public baths, and a 400-kilometer aqueduct system. The city was full of temples, libraries, and theaters, and was the center of the entire Mediterranean world. But by 600, Rome’s population had dropped to less than 30,000, concentrated in a few areas on the seven hills on the left bank of the Tiber. Most of the urban area had been abandoned, overgrown with shrubs and weeds.
The Colosseum, a building that could hold 50,000 spectators in its heyday, was now
The Colosseum, a building that could hold 50,000 spectators in its heyday, was now used as a makeshift residential compound by Ostrogothic soldiers who had settled in Rome after the war. They hacked out crude living quarters in the vaulted seating areas, used the arena floor as a communal pasture for their goats and pigs, and even held informal judicial trials in the imperial podium where emperors once watched gladiatorial combat. One 6th-century Roman chronicler, writing under the pseudonym “Anonymus Valesianus,” recorded that a group of Ostrogothic youths once held a mock “gladiator fight” in the Colosseum, using captured Byzantine prisoners as unwilling participants, until a local bishop intervened and ransomed the prisoners with church funds.
> [!INFO] Trivia: The Value of 6,000 Solidus > The annual pension of 6,000 solidus granted to Romulus Augustulus by Odoacer was a standard gold coin
