Chapter 1: The Firefly Girl – Your Light Is Uniquely Yours
---
Xiao Ying remembered that night very clearly. It was a sultry summer evening.
Cicada chirps played like an endless background track outside her window. She sat at her desk, staring at the crumpled report card before her. The red numbers seemed to mock her—Mathematics 82, Chinese 88, English 85. Not terrible grades, but nothing to be proud of either. At the key middle school she attended, these scores could only place her in the middle of her class, forever out of reach from those dazzling "other people's children."
"Xiao Ying, dinner's ready!" Her mother's voice called from downstairs.
She stuffed the report card into the deepest corner of her schoolbag, as if this could hide it away. Not hide it from her mother—Mom already knew. The atmosphere at home had been subtly tense those days, with Mom's eyes suggesting words she never quite said, and Dad's sighs pretending to be nonchalant. What she was hiding from was herself. She didn't want to see those numbers, didn't want to face that version of herself who was always "not good enough."
"You should look at Xiaoyu—she's in the top ten of the whole grade again!"
"Your cousin got recommended to Peking University, why can't you work a little harder?"
"Your classmate Li Ming passed piano level 10, what about you? You don't even have a hobby!"
These words echoed round and round in Xiao Ying's mind like a persistent refrain. She knew her parents didn't mean to hurt her—they simply wanted her to succeed. But every word was like a tiny needle, pricking some soft place in her heart. Over time, those wounds became thick calluses, wrapping her heart up tight.
Xiao Ying actually knew she wasn't a bad child. She would help the elderly neighbor carry things, give her umbrella to classmates caught in the rain, pour hot tea for Mom when she came home late from work. She had her own little passion—painting, especially small animals and watercolor landscapes. Her brushstrokes were gentle and delicate, able to capture every vein of a falling leaf with lifelike accuracy. But whenever someone asked about her hobby, her answer was always hesitant: "Just... painting casually. Nothing special."
"Nothing special." This phrase was like a lock, sealing shut every place where she might have shone. She felt like a firefly—a small, unremarkable insect. She'd seen real fireflies, in the summer nights at her grandmother's house in the countryside. Those tiny points of light had flickered through the grass, beautiful as a dream. But she also noticed that firefly light was truly dim, far inferior to streetlamps, let alone stars and the moon in the sky. If all lights had to compete on the same stage, fireflies would probably be the first to be eliminated.
With this self-perception, Xiao Ying began her middle school life. In first year, she still held a glimmer of hope, thinking that maybe if she just tried a little harder, studied a little more, she could become that "excellent" person. She bought lots of reference books, signed up for several tutoring classes, and studied until eleven o'clock every night. But the final exam results were still lukewarm. She remained that ordinary girl who wouldn't be noticed in a crowd.
By second year, exhaustion began eroding her enthusiasm. What's the point of trying anyway? Nobody will notice anyway. She's just "not good enough" anyway. Why struggle? She began hiding habitually in classroom corners, letting her mind wander habitually during class, comforting herself habitually with "this is just who I am." She didn't become a troublemaker—she just became quiet. That kind of quiet, unremarkable quiet.
If things had continued like this, Xiao Ying might have become one of those "girls who fade into crowds"—unseen, unremembered, drifting through her teenage years quietly, then becoming an equally quiet adult. But fate sometimes opens a window at the most unexpected moment.
That opportunity came from a summer camp.
---
"Xiao Ying, Mom signed you up for a summer camp—seven days, at a nature camp outside the city. It's perfect for kids your age." When Mom announced this news at dinner, her tone carried careful试探, as if afraid Xiao Ying would refuse.
"I don't want to go." Xiao Ying kept her eyes on her plate. "I'll know nobody there. What's the point?"
"Because you don't know anyone is exactly why you should go!" Mom's voice rose slightly. "Kids your age shouldn't just stay home all day! Li Ming has been to several camps already—"
"Here we go again, Li Ming." Xiao Ying muttered, setting down her chopsticks. "He's so great. Go be his mom then."
That night, Xiao Ying cried for a long time in her room. Not because her mother's comparisons hurt her—she was already used to it, numb to it. She cried because she felt she'd proven that conclusion once again: she just wasn't good enough. Not good enough that even her own mother was disappointed in her, not good enough that Mom had to use other children to motivate her. She buried her face in her pillow, tears flowing silently, and the firefly metaphor from her heart rose up again: See? You're this insignificant. Even your own mother wants a "better child."
But in the end, she went to that summer camp anyway. Not because she'd had a breakthrough, but because Mom said: "Just do Mom a favor—if you don't go, all that money will be wasted."
To not waste the money. This was probably the thirteen-year-old girl's entire reason for agreeing to the camp.

July sunshine poured down like melted honey as the group walked the road to camp. Xiao Ying dragged her suitcase at the back of the line, watching the chattering students ahead, feeling completely out of place. She knew no one and didn't want to know anyone. She just wanted to survive these seven days and go home.
The camp was on the edge of a forest outside the city, far from urban noise, the air thick with the scent of grass and earth. This reminded Xiao Ying of her grandmother's house, the countryside where she used to spend
