Introduction to Information Security: What is Penetration Testing?
Have you ever imagined yourself as a movie hacker? Fingers flying across the keyboard, green code streaming across the screen, and in the blink of an eye, you've breached some massive organization's defenses—doesn't that feeling make your heart race? The real world of information security is indeed full of challenges and excitement, but it's far more complex, sophisticated, and meaningful than you might imagine.
In this era of digital waves sweeping across everything, our lives have never been so closely intertwined with the internet. When you wake up in the morning, your first action might be checking messages on your phone; before heading out, you scan a QR code to unlock a shared bike; at work, your important files might be stored on cloud servers; after work, your smart home system has already adjusted the air conditioning to the perfect temperature. When we enjoy all these conveniences, have we ever paused to think: are these "bridges" connecting us to the digital world secure enough?
Information security is the answer to this question, and it's also the field we're about to take you deep into. Over the next fifteen chapters, we'll embark on a journey together to become "vulnerability hunters"—not to harm anyone, but to learn how to discover weaknesses in systems and make our digital world safer.
The Double-Edged Sword of the Digital Age: The Importance of Information Security
Imagine if one day, all the photos stored on your phone suddenly disappeared, your bank account information was stolen, your social media accounts were controlled by strangers, or even your company's core secrets were exposed to the public—these scenarios sound like nightmares, but in reality, someone experiences something similar every single day.
According to annual reports from cybersecurity companies, more than 5,000 major data breaches occurred globally in 2023, affecting tens of billions of people. These included well-known social media giants, large retail chains, medical institutions, and even government agencies. These incidents not only caused enormous economic losses—some companies' losses were counted in hundreds of millions of dollars—but more seriously, countless ordinary people's privacy was exposed and their personal lives severely disrupted.
Information Security, commonly abbreviated as InfoSec, is a broad field encompassing all aspects of protecting information assets. Information assets are not just your personal photos or chat records; they include everything of value: business secrets, customer data, financial records, intellectual property, and even private conversations you don't want others to know about.
Let's use a simple analogy to understand information security: if your home were an information system, then information security would be the locks, alarms, safes, and all the measures you take to protect your family and belongings. A thief trying to break into your home needs to find vulnerabilities in the lock, gaps in the windows, or exploit your momentary oversight. The job of an information security expert is to discover these vulnerabilities before the thief does and patch them in time.
Information security has three core principles, commonly referred to as the CIA triad (though this name sounds like that famous American intelligence agency, CIA here represents three different concepts):
Confidentiality—ensuring that information is only accessed by authorized individuals. Like your diary that only you can read, or a company's financial reports that only executives can view. The core of confidentiality is the question "who can see it."
Integrity—ensuring that information is not tampered with or corrupted during storage and transmission. Imagine you transfer 100 yuan to a friend, but due to a system attack, 1,000 yuan is actually transferred—this is an example of integrity being compromised. The core of integrity is the question "whether the information remains unchanged."
Availability—ensuring that authorized users can access the information they need when they need it. If a hospital's emergency system goes down due to a hacker attack, patients might face life-threatening situations because medical records can't be accessed in time. The core of availability is the question "can it be used when needed."
These three principles form the cornerstone of information security and serve as standards for evaluating the effectiveness of any security measure. An excellent security system must excel in all three areas—just like a castle that needs thick walls (confidentiality), sentries to spot enemies (integrity), and multiple escape routes (availability).
Types of Hackers: White Hat, Gray Hat, and Black Hat
When ordinary people hear the word "hacker," their minds often conjure a vague but similar image: a person huddled in the dark, wearing a hood, frantically typing on a keyboard, with mysterious code flashing across the screen. This image is ubiquitous in pop culture—from Keanu Reeves playing Neo in The Matrix to Mark Zuckerberg's early appearance in The Social Network. But the real hacker world is far more complex and colorful.
In fact, the word "hacker" itself is a neutral term; its original meaning is "someone skilled with technology," particularly those proficient in computers and network technology. As technology evolved and society's perception of this group changed, the term "hacker" gradually diverged into different meanings, spawning three main types: white hat hackers, gray hat hackers, and black hat hackers.
White Hat Hacker—The Guardians of Justice
White hat hackers, also known as "ethical hackers," are technicians on the side of justice. Their work involves finding security vulnerabilities in systems and networks through legitimate authorization, then reporting these issues to relevant organizations and helping to fix them. White hat hackers are the "doctors" of the cyber world; their goal is to heal and pro
