Chapter 1: The Magic World of Design Patterns
---
When we first see a jigsaw puzzle, we might feel a bit confused—hundreds of small pieces, each looking almost the same, how can we put them together to form a complete picture? But if we look carefully, we'll discover a secret: each puzzle piece has its unique position, just like the puzzle manufacturer designed specific bumps and indentations on each piece so they can fit together perfectly. This "pattern of shapes" makes puzzles possible, and this kind of regularity exists everywhere in our lives.
Lego bricks are another excellent example. When we open a box of Lego, we don't see randomly scattered parts; instead, we find bricks of various shapes—rectangular, square, thin, thick, with holes, with studs. Each brick has a standard way of connecting—只要两块积木的凸起和孔位对齐,轻轻一按,它们就会稳稳地扣在一起。 Because Lego uses this "patterned" design, any two Lego bricks can work together, and we can take them apart and rebuild them countless times, creating infinite possibilities. From simple houses to complex spaceships, from dinosaurs to castles, children can build anything they can imagine with the same bricks.
Architectural blueprints show another kind of power from patterns. When architects design a building, they don't start from scratch drawing every beam and every wall. Instead, they use standardized building components and design modules—the same door and window sizes, the same floor structures, the same stair specifications. When construction workers build according to the blueprint, they know exactly where each brick should go and how each steel bar should connect. This patterned design makes it possible to construct skyscrapers; otherwise, every building would be a unique work of art rather than a practical engineering project that can be replicated.
The word Pattern comes from the French "patron," originally meaning "a paper template for cutting clothes." Imagine a tailor cutting paper into a standard shape before making clothes, then placing this template on fabric to trace the same outline. This is the basic idea of a pattern—not a concrete object, but a method or structure for solving problems that can be repeatedly applied in different situations.

What Are Design Patterns?
In the software world, design patterns are like a "martial arts manual." Imagine the protagonist in a martial arts novel obtaining a manual that records the techniques and formulas summarized by predecessors through countless real battles. These techniques weren't invented by someone out of thin air—they were the most effective methods validated through countless duels and battles. Someone who learns these techniques can handle various opponents with ease.
Design patterns are the "martial arts manuals" of the software world. They are the best practices gradually formed over decades as countless programmers encountered problems, solved them, and summarized their experiences during software development. These best practices aren't the invention of any single person or company—they're the crystallization of collective wisdom from the entire software industry. When you learn a design pattern, you're essentially learning a time-tested solution that can be directly applied in appropriate scenarios, saving you the trouble of starting from scratch.
Why should we learn design patterns? This question is important because it determines whether the time we spend learning them is worthwhile. Imagine we need to build a house, and we have two choices: start from scratch researching all architectural knowledge, figuring out on your own how to lay foundations, build walls, and roof a house; or learn from experienced architects, using construction methods and materials that have already proven effective. Obviously, the second approach is more efficient and reliable. Design patterns are the "proven effective construction methods" of software development.
Learning design patterns has many benefits. First, it allows us to stand on the shoulders of giants. Predecessors have spent tremendous time and effort researching, experimenting, and improving—we don't need to repeat this work; we can directly learn from their results. Second, design patterns are a universal language. When programmers say "we should use the Observer pattern here" or "this is a Singleton," everyone immediately understands what the other means, without lengthy explanations of specific implementation details. This common language makes team collaboration smoother. Third, mastering design patterns improves our problem-solving abilities. When we encounter a new problem, we can compare it with known design patterns to see if there's an existing solution we can draw from.
Another important reason is that design patterns help us write better code. Good code should be maintainable (easy to modify), extensible (easy to add new features), and reusable (usable in different places). Design patterns are exactly the practical experiences summarized toward these goals. If we learn this way of thinking from a young age, we'll naturally write well-structured, logically sound code when we write programs as adults.

The Legendary Story of the Gang of Four
When discussing the history of design patterns, we must mention a milestone event in software engineering. In 1994, four renowned computer scientists—Erich Gamma, Richard Helm, Ralph Johnson, and John Vlissides—published a groundbreaking book titled "Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software." Due to these four authors' outstanding contributions to software engineering, people affectionately called them the "Gang of Four," abbreviated as GoF in English.
Each of these four authors was an expert in their own field. Erich
