Philosophical Origins and the Transformation of Atomic Thinking
Two thousand five hundred years ago, in the Greek city-states along the Aegean coast, the philosopher Democritus (c. 460–370 BCE) proposed a revolutionary idea that would transform human cognition: the entire universe is composed of indivisible最小单位——atoms (ἄτομος, atomos, meaning "uncuttable"). Although this concept lacked experimental verification at the time, it profoundly influenced how humanity understood the nature of matter. Democritus believed that atoms were eternal, indestructible entities filled with void; they differed in shape, size, and arrangement, and these differences gave rise to the diversity of the material world. This purely philosophical speculation established the intellectual tradition in Western science of seeking the ultimate substance of matter.
Democritus's atomic theory did not emerge in isolation but was built upon the critical inheritance of earlier thinkers. His teacher Leucippus is considered the founder of atomism, and Democritus developed it into a complete philosophical system. Compared with other contemporary Greek philosophers—such as Thales, who believed water was the fundamental substance; Heraclitus, who advocated fire as the essence of the universe; and Empedocles, who proposed the four-element theory—Democritus's atomism possessed a distinctive epistemological character: it attributed the fundamental substance of the world to material entities with reality and motility, rather than abstract principles or elements. This ontological commitment provided the intellectual foundation for the revival of atomism during the later scientific revolution.
However, for over a thousand years after ancient Greece, atomistic thought was largely marginalized. Aristotle's four-element theory and hylomorphism dominated, while atomism was suppressed as heresy. This shift in the intellectual landscape would only change with the rise of modern experimental science.
The Chemical Atomism of the Nineteenth Century
In the early nineteenth century, English chemist John Dalton (1766–1844) proposed a chemical atomic theory based on experimental observations, marking a fundamental transformation of the atomic concept from philosophical speculation to scientific theory. In 1803, Dalton presented his paper on atomic weights and proportions to the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society, systematically elaborating his atomic doctrine. Its core points included: each chemical element consists of specific atoms; atoms of the same element have identical mass (atomic weight); atoms of different elements combine in simple integer ratios to form compounds; and chemical reactions are merely the recombination of atoms.
The great significance of Dalton's atomic theory lies in its provision of a quantified theory of matter. With the concept of atomic weight, Dalton could explain experimental regularities such as the Law of Definite Proportions (Proust's Law) and the Law of Multiple Proportions. Taking the formation of water as an example: hydrogen and oxygen combine in a 2:1 mass ratio to form water. If hydrogen's atomic weight is set to 1, then oxygen's atomic weight must be 8. This simple proportional relationship received a clear explanation within Dalton's atomic framework, whereas it had seemed bewildering in earlier affinity theory.
However, Dalton's atomic theory faced significant challenges throughout the nineteenth century. Did atoms truly exist, or were they merely convenient fictional entities for calculation? This epistemological question became a focus of debate between "realists" and "instrumentalists." The renowned physical chemist Wilhelm Ostwald held an instrumentalist position, arguing that atoms were merely economical devices of thought rather than physical reality. It was not until the early twentieth century, with Einstein's theoretical explanation of Brownian motion and Perrin's experimental verification, that atomic realism received decisive confirmation. In 1908, Perrin observed Brownian motion of gamboge particles in liquid and precisely determined Avogadro's number as $N_A = 6.5 \times 10^{23}$ mol$^{-1}$, remarkably close to the currently accepted value of $6.022 \times 10^{23}$ mol$^{-1}$. This work provided a solid empirical foundation for atomic theory.
Although Dalton's atomic theory successfully explained the fundamental laws of chemical reactions, its understanding of atomic structure remained naive. In Dalton's view, atoms were solid, indivisible spheres—essentially no different from what the ancient Greek atomists had imagined. However, with a series of major experimental discoveries at the end of the nineteenth century, this naive conception of atoms was about to be completely overturned.
The Discovery of the Electron and the Birth of Modern Particle Physics
In 1897, Joseph John Thomson (1856–1940) at the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University conducted a series of carefully designed experiments and successfully demonstrated that cathode rays were streams of negatively charged particles. This discovery marked humanity's first experimental confirmation that atoms contain more fundamental substructures, opening the door to modern particle physics. Thomson received the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics for this work.
The core design of Thomson's experiment was as follows: in a vacuum tube, a high voltage was applied to generate cathode rays, which were passed through regions with perpendicular electric and magnetic fields. By adjusting the strengths of the electric and magnetic fields, the deflection effects on the charged particles could be made to cancel each other. From this equilibrium condition, the charge-to-mass ratio ($e/m$) of the particles could be calculated. Thomson measured the charge-to-mass ratio of cathode ray particles as approximately 1837 times that of hydrogen ions. This meant that the mass of these particles was far smaller than any known atom—they either had a charge far greater than hydrog
