Chapter 1: The Sleeping Village — Shenzhen Before 1979
> > Before Shenzhen was drawn into the blueprint of a "Special Economic Zone," what kind of land was it really? What secrets were hidden in its coastline, hills, villages, and people that would, forty years later, transform it into what it is today?

A Story That Begins with a Fishing Net
To understand today's Shenzhen, we must first rewind the camera to its origin. That origin is not August 26, 1980 — the "birthday" later confirmed by legal documents. The true origin is a morning without a clock, without any official paperwork, without anyone realizing that history was brewing: the ninth day of the third lunar month, 1962, on the seashore of Shekou Commune, Bao'an County, Guangdong Province.
That morning, a young man named Chen Dewang — 22 years old that year — and his wife Lin Xiuzhen, two years his junior, untied a fishing net woven from hemp and cotton threads from a wooden stake. The sea breeze, salty and steady, blew in from the Lingding Yang (the inner Pearl River estuary), puffing out the mesh. Chen wore a faded blue cotton shirt, his trousers rolled above his knees, his skin turned bronze by years of seawater and sun. Behind him stood a small hut built of stone, yellow clay, and thatch grass; wild weeds grew on its roof, and strings of dried small fish hung under the eaves.
Lin Xiuzhen was pregnant with their first child. She bent over to help her husband straighten one corner of the net, saying nothing. Her gaze passed over the net, over the shallow flats, and landed on the opposite shore — Hong Kong, Yuen Long, the New Territories, a place she had never set foot on but had heard her elders mention countless times since childhood. The phrase "the other side," in her memory, was almost synonymous with "another world": electric lights, running water, rice jars that never went empty.
This was Shenzhen in 1962 — more precisely, "Bao'an County" in 1962. At that time, the name "Shenzhen" did not yet refer to a city; at most it referred to a small town near today's Dongmen area in Luohu. The entire stretch of land east of the Pearl River estuary and north of the Nanshan Peninsula was collectively called "Bao'an County," under Guangdong Province's jurisdiction, with a total population of roughly 300,000 people and a GDP of, by later statistical measures, only a few tens of millions of yuan.
A family like Chen Dewang's would have been considered "middle" in Bao'an at that time. Above them were landlords, rich peasants, and fishery capitalists — who had lost most of their property in the land reform and joint state-private ownership campaigns after 1949. Below them were tenant farmers, orphans, widows, and small self-employed producers like Chen Dewang, who both farmed and fished for themselves.
Chen Dewang's father had once run a small salt field in Nantou, making a living by evaporating seawater. Salt production was one of the oldest industries on the Bao'an coast, with large-scale saltworks dating back to the Song Dynasty and reaching their peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Salt was a strategically controlled commodity under state monopoly, and salt workers ranked below farmers in social status, considered part of the "lower nine trades." Chen's father had lost his salt field to a typhoon and turned to fishing. By Chen Dewang's generation, the salt fields had completely disappeared, but the craft — how to measure brine concentration, how to read wind direction, how to dig ditches in salt pans — was still passed down orally by the elders.
We open this first chapter with such a long description of a fictional (or semi-fictional) fisherman's family not as a literary flourish. Chen Dewang, Lin Xiuzhen, and their future children — who will reappear throughout the next forty years of this book — represent Shenzhen's original inhabitants. The core question we must answer is: Where did this city come from? When was its seed planted? From which river did its first drops of water flow?
The answer begins with three foundational layers: geography, history, and people.

The Geographic and Historical Foundation: Coastline, Tidal Flats, Nantou Ancient City, and Six Hundred Years of Salt History
A Topographic Map "Cradled by Bays"
If you open a map of Shenzhen from 1979 — assuming accurate ones existed then — you would see a striking image: sea to the south, sea to the west, sea to the east, and only mountains blocking the north. The whole of Shenzhen looked like a "peninsula" squeezed between mountains and sea, with a plain in the middle cut by low hills.
Specifically, Shenzhen's geographic features can be summarized in a few key numbers:
Roughly 260 kilometers (1979 data; today it's even longer due to land reclamation). This is an extremely winding coastline stretching from Dapeng Bay in the east to Shenzhen Bay in the west, with prominent features like the Dapeng Peninsula, Kowloon Peninsula (Hong Kong side), and Shekou Peninsula. The coastline forms several semi-enclosed bays — Dapeng Bay, Daya Bay, Shenzhen Bay, Qianhai Bay — all naturally suitable harbors.
About 2,020 square kilometers (including what would become the SEZ and the rest of Bao'an County). About 60% is hilly and mountainous, and 40% is tableland and plains. This means Shenzhen has never had enough flat land — quite different from Shanghai or Tianjin, which sit on vast plains. To develop industry, build ports, and construct airports, Shenzhen would almost always have to "cut hills and reclaim sea."
The Shenzhen River (about 37 km long, forming the border with Hong Kong), the Guanlan River, the Longgang River, the Pingshan River. These rivers are mostly short, with unstable flow, and historically not navigable.
Subtropical monsoon climate. Average annual temperature around 22°C, annual rainfall about 1,900 mm. Typhoon season runs from May to September, bringing storms and storm surges — the most feared natural force for coastal resident
