The Ontology of Divination: Defining the Practice and Its Epistemological Boundaries /
Divination, as one of humanity's oldest practices, spans all known civilizations—from Mesopotamian extispicy to the Chinese I Ching, from Greek ornithomancy to West African Ifá. Yet despite its universality, divination has long occupied a marginalized position in academic discourse, often dismissed as superstition or a relic of pre-scientific eras. Contemporary discussions on divination tend to fall into two extremes: uncritical New Age mysticism on one hand, and dismissive scientism on the other. This book seeks to carve out a third path: treating divination as a serious hermeneutic technology—a cognitive practice that negotiates between randomness and meaning. The primary task of this chapter is to establish a precise, academically defensible ontological definition of divination, clearly delineating its epistemological boundaries—what it is and, crucially, what it is not—laying the groundwork for subsequent ethical inquiry. We will argue that the essence of divination does not lie in predicting the future or communicating with supernatural realms, but rather in functioning as a symbolic dialogue that fosters self-awareness and situational understanding. Any supernatural claims about divination are not only epistemologically unreliable but also ethically perilous, as they may shift responsibility away from the agent toward external authorities.
To define divination, one must first distinguish it from two commonly conflated concepts: prophecy and psychic prediction. Prophecy is typically associated with religious or revelatory traditions, characterized by claims of direct communication from gods, spirits, or supernatural sources. A prophet often functions as a passive channel, delivering authoritative, imperative messages that frequently involve moral directives or definitive pronouncements about future events. For instance, the Hebrew prophet Isaiah declares “Thus says the Lord,” and his message is treated as divine oracle, not to be questioned. In contrast, divination is a technical practice that relies on specific symbolic systems (such as tarot cards, I Ching hexagrams, or astrological charts) and procedural operations (shuffling, casting, drawing charts). The diviner is not a passive channel but an active interpreter, employing trained skills to decode patterns of symbols generated randomly. Divinatory answers are often open-ended, metaphorical, rather than deterministic commands. For example, I Ching divination obtains hexagrams by coin tosses; the diviner interprets them in light of the text and context, offering advice or possibilities, not immutable prophecies.
Psychic prediction, on the other hand, emphasizes an individual’s alleged supernatural perceptual abilities, such as telepathy, precognition, or remote viewing. Psychics claim to directly access information through inner “sight” or “sensation,” often without external tools or systems. Their predictions typically feature specific, detailed event descriptions, claiming to accurately foresee personal destinies or global occurrences. Divination, conversely, does not rely on any purported supernatural faculties but on a teachable, learnable set of symbolic operations and interpretive techniques. Diviners work by mastering symbolic systems, honing intuition, and developing contextual understanding—skills that improve with practice. For instance, a tarot reader may spend years studying card meanings, practicing spreads, and accumulating experience through numerous readings, rather than claiming “innate powers.” Thus, the fundamental distinction lies in this: divination is a rule-based, trainable hermeneutic practice; psychic prediction rests on unverifiable claims of personal supernatural ability.
Divination must also be distinguished from mere chance interpretation. In daily life, people often attribute meaning to accidental events, such as “a crow cawing means a visitor is coming” or “dreaming of snakes represents wealth.” Such interpretations are often part of cultural customs or folk beliefs, lacking systematic symbolic structures and rigorous interpretive rules; they rely more on intuitive association or superstition. Divination differs in that it is built upon highly structured symbolic systems with long histories, complex networks of associations, and codified interpretive guidelines. For example, tarot consists of 78 cards, each with upright and reversed meanings, relational dynamics with other cards, and positional significance in spreads; the I Ching has 64 hexagrams, each with judgment and line statements, interpreted in light of changing lines. The divinatory process itself includes randomization steps (shuffling, casting), but interpretation must follow systematic rules rather than arbitrary association. Thus, divination is “controlled randomness,” maintaining a tension between random generation and systematic interpretation.
Through these distinctions, we can outline the ontological features of divination: it is a hermeneutic technology—a rule-governed system that generates meaningful patterns from randomly produced symbols and contextualizes them within specific situations. It is neither passive reception of supernatural revelation nor direct manifestation of personal mystical powers, but rather a cognitive-symbolic practice situated between randomness and meaning. This definition places divination within the hermeneutic tradition—from Schleiermacher and Dilthey’s hermeneutics, to Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, to contemporary semiotics and cognitive science. For Gadamer, understanding is always an “event” involving the interpreter’s “prejudices” and the “fusion of horizons” with the text. Divination exemplifies this event: the randomly generated symbolic pattern (e.g., a card spread) acts as a “text,” with which the diviner engages, bringing their own prejudices (cultural background, personal experience, traini
