The Ancient Yellow River, A Mysterious Story

很久很久以前——比你曾曾曾曾曾祖父的曾曾曾曾曾祖父还要久远得多——在这个世界上，有一个地方，它的名字叫做黄河。

Long, long ago—far, far longer ago than your great-great-great-great-great-grandfather's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather—there was a place in this world called the Yellow River.

The Yellow River is one of the longest and oldest rivers on this land. It rushes down from the highest snow-capped mountains, flows through vast plateaus, crosses endless mountain ranges, and finally pours into the endless sea. Its water is yellow because, since ancient times, it has carried yellow mud along its journey—like a golden dragon winding its way across the land.

In those ancient times, all kinds of animals lived along the banks of the Yellow River. There were clever foxes, gentle hippos, lively little rabbits, and many, many other friends. They rose with the sunrise and rested with the sunset, living simple and happy lives.

可是有一天，河水突然停止了流动。

But one day, the river water suddenly stopped flowing.

所有的小动物们都惊呆了。他们从未见过这样的事情发生。黄河的水一向是流动的，从来不会停下来，就像时间从来不会停止一样。可是现在，河面变得平静如镜，倒映着天空中的白云和飞鸟。

All the little animals were stunned. They had never seen anything like this happen. The Yellow River's water had always flowed; it never stopped, just like time never stopped. But now, the river surface became as calm as a mirror, reflecting the white clouds and flying birds in the sky.

"What's happening?" asked the little fox, tilting his head, his big tail swaying gently behind him.

Just then, a strange phenomenon appeared. The river water began to glow with a faint light, growing brighter and brighter, like someone had lit a huge lantern at the bottom of the river.

The Legend of the River God Turtle

Suddenly, the river water parted to both sides, as if invisible hands were drawing apart a curtain. Then, a enormous figure rose slowly from the riverbed.

“天哪！”小狐狸倒吸一口凉气，“那是什么？”

"Oh my!" The little fox took a sharp breath. "What is that?"

那是一只巨大的乌龟！它的壳比一间小房子还要大，上面布满了奇奇怪怪的纹路——有的像流水，有的像山脉，有的像火焰，有的像树叶。那些纹路闪闪发光，好像藏着什么秘密。

It was a giant turtle! Its shell was bigger than a small house, covered with strange patterns—some like flowing water, some like mountains, some like flames, some like leaves. Those patterns sparkled and glowed, as if hiding some secret.

"Grandfather, who are you?" asked the little rabbit, gathering her courage. Her voice trembled a little, but her eyes were full of curiosity.

The River God Turtle looked up toward the distant sky. There, a auspicious cloud was floating slowly over, and between the clouds, a figure riding on an animal was barely visible.

"Look, that is the Dragon Horse," said the turtle. "It comes from heaven and will bring something precious. And I will bring you another precious gift."

Just then, a melodious sound came from the sky. The sound was like wind rustling through a bamboo forest, like water flowing over stones, clear and beautiful.

"Look! Look up at the sky!" The little rabbit pointed at the sky, jumping with excitement.

A divine horse was galloping down from the clouds. But this was no ordinary horse—its body was covered with glittering scales, each scale like a tiny sun, shining with golden light in the sunlight. What was even more magical was that this horse walked on clouds, stepping down from heaven one step at a time, as if walking on invisible stairs.

"Oh my!" the little fox exclaimed. "What kind of horse is that? Why does it have scales? Why can it walk on clouds?"

"That's a Dragon Horse," said Mr. Hippo, who, despite his wide experience, was still amazed by today's events. "Legend says the Dragon Horse is a divine mount. It only appears in times of peace and prosperity."

"Grandfather River Turtle said you would bring something precious," the little rabbit stepped forward bravely. "What is this precious thing?"
