Math Secrets in the Kitchen
The kitchen is the perfect place to start our adventure!
The kitchen is one of the most magical places at home. It has all kinds of food, fragrant dishes, and the clinking sounds of pots and pans. But did you know there is actually a lot of math hiding in the kitchen?
The Magic of Counting
Maybe there are two slices of bread, or maybe three. When you reach for the bread, you're already doing math. You're counting!
Suppose you want two slices of bread for breakfast. Let's take a close look at counting. When you pick up the first slice of bread, that's "one"; the second slice is "two." At this moment, your brain is processing a very important math concept—one-to-one correspondence.
What does one-to-one correspondence mean? Simply put, it's when each thing has exactly one number that matches it. You have two hands, so when you count, you say "one, two"—each hand gets one number, no more and no less.
One, two, three. You can play a simple game with mom or dad: put three cookies on the table and count them. One, two, three. Watch your finger point to each cookie from left to right, saying a number each time you point. That's the secret to counting!
Little Tips for Measuring
This is also math!
When you scoop sugar with a measuring spoon, you're practicing a skill called "measuring." Measuring means using numbers to show how much of something there is.
Try this: pour one scoop of sugar into a cup, then pour another scoop in. Now there are two scoops of sugar in the cup. What you just did was addition!
Half means one divided by two. When you split a cup of water into two equal parts, you're practicing another important math concept—fractions. Half means one divided by two. One-half is half of the whole. A cup of water, split into two equal parts, each part is one-half. Isn't that amazing?
Shapes in the Kitchen
Look at the bowls, plates, and cups in the kitchen. What shapes are they?
Circles are round with no corners. Square cutting boards have four sides, all the same length, with four right angles.
A cylindrical cup looks like a column. A cylinder has three surfaces: the top is a circle, the side is curved, and the bottom is also a circle. Next time you drink water, you can take a close look at your cup!

Math Games in the Living Room
Now let's walk into the living room and see what mathematical treasures are hiding here!
The living room is usually where we relax with family, watch TV, and play games.
Finding Shapes
Is it round or square? Now look at the floor tiles. Are they squares or rectangles?
Shapes are a very important part of math. Our world is full of different kinds of shapes.
Let's count the shapes in the living room together:
How many rectangular windows are there? Maybe two or three. How many square throw pillows? Perhaps one or two. The round clock hangs on the wall, its hands always moving—this is also a circle.
You can play an even more fun game: find out how many different shapes are in the living room. Then write them down!
The Art of Sorting
Is your toy box full of all kinds of toys? Cars, blocks, dolls, balls... They look messy, right?
But did you know? Once you learn to sort, everything can become neat and tidy! Sorting is a very important math skill.
Sorting means putting things into different groups based on some rule. For example, you can put all the toy cars together, all the dolls together, and all the blocks together. This is sorting by "type."
You can also sort by other rules. For instance, put all the red toys together and all the blue toys together. This is sorting by "color."
Or you could put big toys in one box and small toys in another box. This is sorting by "size."
Sorting not only makes your room tidier, but also helps you understand the world better. When you know how to sort, you'll discover many hidden patterns!
Numbers Are Everywhere
There are many numbers in the living room. Have you noticed them?
The TV remote control has numbers. You press "1" to go to the first channel and "2" to go to the second channel. Numbers help us find the shows we want to watch!
There are numbers on the telephone too.
The number on the thermometer tells us if it's cold or hot. If the temperature is 30 degrees, it's very hot; if it's 5 degrees, it's very cold.
The numbers on the clock tell us when to eat and when to go to sleep. Seven o'clock, time for dinner; eight o'clock, time for a bath.

Little Math in the Bedroom
The bedroom is where you sleep and rest.
Counting Your Treasures
How many pieces of clothing do you have? How many pairs of socks? How many books are on your bookshelf?
These questions all require counting! Counting is probably the most basic math skill. You practice counting every day without even realizing it.
Let's play a "bedtime counting" game! Before bed each night, count how many pieces of clothing you took off. One pajama top, one pair of socks, one pair of pants... One, two, three, four—you took off four pieces of clothing!
Learning to Sort with Clothes
Every morning when you get dressed, or every evening when you organize your clothes, are actually great opportunities to practice sorting.
Fold your socks in pairs. The left sock finds the right sock, and together
