Chapter 1: The Neighbor Who Changed Everything
---
The rain pattered against the window as sixteen-year-old Xiaoyu curled up in the corner of her room, knees pressed against her chest, staring blankly at the ceiling. Her room looked like an abandoned warehouse—clothes piled into small mountains scattered across the floor, textbooks, snack wrappers, and cosmetics jumbled together on the desk, unwashed dishes from last week stacked on the nightstand, the air thick with an indefinable stuffiness.
This was already the third time this semester that a teacher had called her in for a talk.
"Xiaoyu, what's been going on with you lately? You haven't been handing in homework, you space out in class, your grades have plummeted..." Teacher Wang's voice echoed in her ears.
She knew Teacher Wang was right. Lately, she felt just like this room—messy, directionless. She knew she had a math test tomorrow, yet couldn't summon the energy to review. She wanted to tidy up the room but always gave up after ten minutes. Even chatting with her best friend felt like too much effort.
"Maybe I'm just a failure," she thought bitterly.
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Xiaoyu didn't move. On this rainy Saturday afternoon, she really didn't want to deal with anyone. But the doorbell rang twice more, accompanied by a gentle but firm voice: "Is anyone home? I'm your new neighbor who just moved in today. I wanted to come say hello."
Her mother's voice came from the living room: "Xiaoyu, go open the door."
Xiaoyu reluctantly pulled herself up from the floor and shuffled to the door. When she opened it, she froze.
Standing at the door was an elderly woman who looked over seventy. She was short and slim, her silver-white hair neatly pinned up, wearing a deep blue cotton qipao embroidered with elegant plum blossom patterns. What surprised Xiaoyu the most were the old lady's eyes—clear and bright, sparkling with a light she had never seen before, as if they could peer straight into the deepest corners of someone's heart.
"Hello there, little girl," the old lady smiled, her voice as clear and pleasant as a spring brook. "I'm Grandma Mei, living across from you. I just moved in today. We'll be neighbors from now on, I hope we can look out for each other."
"Oh... hello, Grandma Mei." Xiaoyu felt somewhat at a loss. "I'm Xiaoyu. Welcome to the neighborhood."
Grandma Mei's eyes swept across the room behind Xiaoyu, her gaze carrying a special kind of penetration. Xiaoyu instinctively wanted to close the door to hide the chaos, but Grandma Mei simply smiled faintly, a meaningful light flickering in her eyes.
"Little girl, the energy in your room is truly quite chaotic," Grandma Mei said softly, almost as if talking to herself.
"Energy?" Xiaoyu frowned. "What energy? The heating from the air conditioner?"
Grandma Mei laughed, her laughter as clear as wind chimes: "Not the air conditioner's air, but 'Qi'—Chi—field energy, vital energy."
Xiaoyu looked completely confused. She had heard the word "aura" before, usually used to describe a celebrity or important person as "having great presence," but she never imagined the term could be connected to her messy room.
"What even is Chi?" she blurted out. "Sounds like something a fortune teller would say to scam people."
Grandma Mei didn't get angry. Her eyes curved into crescent moons, her smile deepening: "Fortune teller? Hahaha, little girl, your understanding of 'Qi' is different from those charlatans on the street corners. But today we won't discuss this. Another day, when you have free time, you're welcome to come sit at my place. I have freshly brewed Pu'er tea."
With that, Grandma Mei turned and left, leaving Xiaoyu standing at the door, her mind still trying to process that bizarre conversation.
"Qi... aura... Chi..." Xiaoyu muttered to herself. "This grandma can't be crazy, right?"
She closed the door and returned to her room. But this time, she began examining this space she'd lived in for three years with a completely different perspective.
Why did clothes always end up piled on the chair back instead of in the closet? Because every time she opened the closet it was too much trouble to find things, so she just threw them wherever. Because she threw them wherever, she never knew what clothes she had in the closet, so she bought new ones, and the new clothes got tossed around too... This was a vicious cycle with no end.
And what about that mess on the desk? Textbooks, workbooks, comics, snacks, earphones, hair ties... everything crammed together. Every time she tried to do homework, she had to first clear a "battlefield." But the problem was, even after clearing it, two days later it would be back to the same old mess.
Xiaoyu suddenly realized that the chaos in her room wasn't just physical. This was a systemic problem, a microcosm of her lifestyle, reflecting the confusion and helplessness she felt inside.
That night, Xiaoyu lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to sleep. What Grandma Mei said about "Qi" kept circling in her mind.
"Chi, the Qi of aura, vital energy..." she whispered in the darkness. "Could it be that our living environment really affects our mood and state?"
She thought of the school library. It was always clean and tidy, windows bright, green plants flourishing. Every time she walked into the library, she couldn't help but lower her voice and slow her steps, feeling an inexplicable calm and focus. During final exam review periods, she loved staying in the library most, because there, she seemed able to concentrate better.
She also remembered her best friend Xiaomei's living room. Xiaomei was a "minimalist"—there were hardly any extra decorations in her home, everything had its fixed place. When Xiaoyu first went to Xiaomei's house, she was so shocked her jaw dropped: "Your place is so clean!" But strangely, sitting in that overly tidy space, Xiaoyu felt uncomfortable all over, as if she might dirty something or break something.
So the question arose: Was there some kind of "just right" state? Not too messy, not too tidy,
