Chapter 1: The Foundation of Civilization: The Nile River and the Birth of Ancient Egyptian Concepts of Life and Death
> 【English】If you stood in the valley of ancient Egypt 5,000 years ago, the first thing that would meet your eyes would be a great river bathed in golden sunlight — this is the Nile River. The ancient Egyptians called it *Iteru*, which means "the Great River"; in Arabic it is still called *Al-Nil*, meaning "the Great River". At 6,670 kilometers long, the world’s longest river originates from Lake Victoria on the East African Plateau and Lake Tana on the Ethiopian Plateau, flows north through 11 African countries, and finally splits into countless tributaries at its delta, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea. For the ancient Egyptians, the Nile was never an ordinary river: it was the mother river, the source of life, and it could even be said that the very foundation of ancient Egyptian civilization was given by the Nile.
> 【English】The ancient Egyptians called the Nile River valley "Kemet", meaning "the Black Land", because the black silt left behind after the floods receded was the core of their agricultural abundance. Every year from June to September, the Ethiopian Plateau enters the rainy season, and the water volume of the Blue Nile surges by 80%. Carrying red clay and humus from the African interior, it pushes north at a speed of 4 kilometers per hour. The ancient Egyptians called this period of rising water levels "Akhet", meaning "the Inundation Season". From October to November, the floodwaters submerge the Nile valley up to 15-30 kilometers wide on both sides, turning the whole of Egypt into a vast ocean, with only the tops of pyramids, temples and mud-brick houses visible above the water. During this time, the ancient Egyptians would move to the high ground on both sides of the valley to avoid the floods. By late November, the floodwaters begin to recede slowly, leaving behind a 1-2 cm thick layer of black silt on the former riverbed. This silt has 10 times the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium content of ordinary soil, making it a top-grade natural fertilizer. The ancient Egyptians called this receding period "Peret", meaning "the Planting Season". They would drive oxen to plow the silt with wooden ploughs, planting wheat, barley, flax, as well as vegetables and fruits such as onions, cucumbers and grapes. From April to June of the following year, the crops ripen, and the ancient Egyptians enter "Shemu", meaning "the Harvest Season", harvesting wheat with stone sickles, transporting grain to granaries by donkeys, and waiting for the next inundation.
> 【English】This stable agricultural model was the core foundation of ancient Egyptian civilization: the Nile silt was fertile enough that ancient Egyptian wheat yielded an average of 150-200 kg per mu, twice that of contemporary Mesopotamia, and there was often a surplus of grain, so not everyone had to be busy farming. Archaeologists have found large amounts of surplus wheat and barley in ancient Egyptian granary sites, enough to feed the entire population for more than three years. It was precisely because of this stable food supply that the ancient Egyptians could devote more time and resources to religion, art, architecture and thought, and had the spare capacity to ponder profound questions such as "what happens after people die".
> 【English】The "death and rebirth" of the sun had the most sacred name in ancient Egyptian mythology — Ra. The ancient Egyptians believed that the sun god Ra sailed on the solar boat every day, departing from the land of the rising sun in the east, crossing the sky to bring light and warmth to the earth; by evening, the solar boat would sail to the land of death in the west, the Duat, the "underworld" in ancient Egyptian conception. In the Duat, Ra would encounter various monsters and challenges of chaos, but every dawn he would overcome these difficulties and rise again from the east to begin a new day’s journey. The ancient Egyptians saw the sun’s entire journey as a complete "death-rebirth" cycle: the sunset in the evening is not an end, but a preparation for the next day’s sunrise; the darkness of night is not eternal, just a short pause before the arrival of light.
> 【English】If you compare the sun’s journey with the Nile’s natural cycle, you will find their rhythms match perfectly: the Inundation Season (Akhet) from June to September each year, when floods submerge the valley, kill pests in the fields and turn the dry land into a vast ocean, looks like a "death" season; from October to November, as the floodwaters recede, the wheat seeds buried in the black silt begin to sprout, corresponding to the beginning of "rebirth"; the Harvest Season (Shemu) from April to June of the following year, when the wheat ripens and the sun shines high, is the most abundant stage of life in the year. The ancient Egyptians quickly linked the cycles of these three natural phenomena: the growth of wheat, the rising and setting of the sun, and the inundation of the Nile are essentially different manifestations of the same "death-rebirth" cycle. They even based their 365-day calendar entirely on these three seasons, with 12 months of 30 days each and 5 leftover days as festivals. This calendar was used for more than 3,000 years, until it was replaced after the Roman conquest of Egypt.
> 【English】This observation quickly extended from natural phenomena to reflections on human beings themselves: if wheat grows again after being planted, and the sun rises again after setting, can people come back to life after death, just like them? The answer to this question lies in ancient Egypt’s most famous myth — the story of Osiris. Osiris was the ninth king of ancient Egypt, and the god of agriculture and the afterlife. His legend almost perfectly matches the natural cycle of the Nile: his brother Set, jealous of his throne, tricked him into a specially
