Every time you pick up a brush and leave a colorful mark on paper, have you ever wondered what that mark represents? It could be the rays of the sun, the color of grass, or just an interesting shape you drew on a whim. Drawing is truly magical! It allows us to express the ideas in our minds and the things we see, using various colors and lines.
Imagine if you could draw a flying rabbit to give to a good friend; a rainbow-colored horse as a birthday gift; or even create an entire Candy Kingdom on paper, where everything is sweet! This is the power of drawing—it turns our imagination into something we can see and share.
Drawing is an art form that uses tools like pens and paints to create images on paper, fabric, or other materials. It is one of the oldest and most direct forms of artistic expression, stretching from the cave paintings of ancient people to the present day.
Here's a simple way to understand it: Drawing is talking with brushes and colors! When you see a beautiful flower, you can use a red crayon to draw the petals and a green colored pencil to draw the stems and leaves. You don't need to write the word "flower"—just draw it, and everyone will know it's a flower.
There are several different ways to draw, and each one is fun:
Line Drawing: Using lines of different thicknesses and shapes to draw. Like bending a thin wire into various shapes and then filling them with color.
Colored Drawing: Using crayons, markers, or paints to add various colors to the picture, making it more vivid and beautiful.
Mixed Media Drawing: Combining lines and colors to create richer, more layered artwork.
No matter which method you use, the most important thing about drawing is not how "realistic" your drawing looks, but expressing your inner thoughts and feelings. The famous painter Picasso once said: "I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them." So don't be afraid of drawing "not realistic enough"—as long as you draw what's in your heart, that's the best drawing!
To start drawing, we first need to meet the helpful companions of drawing—various art tools. Just like soldiers need different weapons for different battles, young artists need different tools for different drawings.
Crayons are one of the most commonly used drawing tools for children. They look like short, round, colorful chalk, perfect for small hands to hold. Crayons are less likely to get your hands dirty, with bright and full colors, making them ideal for children just starting to learn to draw.
Advantages of Crayons:
- Color variety: A box of crayons usually comes with 12, 24, or even more colors
- Doesn't dry out easily: Just put the cap back on after use, and you can use it next time
- Great for large areas: Easy to color entire backgrounds
- Less messy: Easier to control than paint, won't make a big mess
Tips for Using Crayons:
- Rotate the crayon: After drawing for a while, rotate the crayon so it lasts longer
- Color in the same direction: This makes the colors more even
- Use thicker paper: Thin paper tears or wrinkles easily
Did you know? Crayons were first invented in 1903 by an American named Edna Howitt Binney. Before that, children could only draw with colored chalk or paint, which was much more troublesome than crayons!
Markers look like thin little sticks filled with colorful ink. Their tips come in different shapes: round tips that make small dots, and flat tips that look like little brushes. Markers are known for their especially bright colors and smooth, flowing lines.
Characteristics of Markers:
- Super bright colors: What you draw looks especially vivid and eye-catching
- Smooth strokes: Lines are especially smooth without any gaps
- Quick drying: Dries quickly after drawing, no long waiting
- Great for details: Round-tip markers can draw very fine lines
Important Notes for Using Markers:
- Always put the cap back on: Markers dry out easily, and without the cap, they'll stop working quickly
- Don't color in the same spot for too long: This might tear the paper
- Draw on smooth paper for better results: Colors are more vivid on smooth paper
Colored pencils look like the regular pencils we use for writing, but their "heart" is colorful. The special thing about colored pencils is that they can create very delicate, precise lines—it's like colorful strings dancing on paper.
The Charm of Colored Pencils:
- Delicate colors: Can create very soft, subtle color variations
- Colors can blend: Draw two colors close together and gently rub them, and they become a third color
- Great for details: Can draw very small lines and shapes
- Pressure controls depth: Light pressure makes light colors, heavy pressure makes dark colors
Colored Pencil Tips:
- Sharpen for better use: After using for a while, sharpen colored pencils so you can draw fine lines
- Don't press too hard: Too much pressure will tear or mark the paper
- Gently blend when done: Gently rub with your finger or a blending stump, and the colors become softer
Paint is a more "advanced" drawing tool. Painting is like going on a big color adventure! There are many types of paint: watercolor, gouache, acrylic, etc. The most common for children are watercolors and gouache.
(Watercolors):
- Like transparent crystals: Creates a transparent, ethereal feeling
- Needs water to mix: How much water you use determines the color's depth
- Dries quickly: Dries soon after painting
- Great for backgrounds and skies: Creates a hazy, beautiful effect
(Gouache):
- Full, thick colors: Creates opaque, strong coverage
- Gets lighter when dry: Colors look deeper when painting, lighter when dry
- Can cover mistakes: If you make a mistake, wait for it to dry and paint over it
