The Magical Village Story
Imagine, long, long ago, there was a small village nestled in a beautiful valley between two large mountains. This village was called "Trust Valley" because the hardworking and kind people who lived there trusted each other and lived in harmony.
Every morning, the villagers would gather in the central square of the village to exchange the things they needed. Old Man Zhang would trade his home-raised chickens for Mrs. Li's knitted scarves. Uncle Wang would exchange fresh milk for vegetables planted by Auntie Zhao. Although this bartering method was ancient, the villagers enjoyed it because they found it fun and could meet more neighbors.
However, a problem arose!
One day, a cunning merchant came to the village. He traded a pile of glittering glass beads, claiming they were rare gems from a distant kingdom, for an ancient map that the village chief had treasured. A few days later, the village chief discovered that those "rare gems" were just ordinary glass beads, worth nothing! But when he went to confront the merchant, the merchant had already run away with the map.
The village chief was very sad. He gathered everyone in the village for a meeting and said: "We need a way to make sure every transaction is clearly recorded, so no one will ever be cheated again!"
Just then, the smartest old man in the village—everyone called him "Grandpa Wisdom"—stood up and said: "I have a great idea!"
Grandpa Wisdom asked every villager to bring a stone, and then he dug a big pit in the center of the square. He said to everyone: "From today on, every transaction and every promise in our village must be carved onto this big stone. And every household must keep a copy of this stone!"
The villagers thought this was a wonderful idea! They found the most famous stonemason in the village and spent a whole month carving all the village's transactions since its establishment onto that big stone: who traded what for what, who promised to do what, who owed what to whom... everything was clearly recorded!
From then on, no fraud ever happened in Trust Valley again. Because even if someone tried to secretly modify the records, like saying they had ten chickens instead of five, they could only change the stone copy kept at their own home. When they traded with others, the other person would pull out their own copy of the stone for comparison—"That's not right! Look, it clearly says five chickens, not ten!"
And so, the villagers of Trust Valley established a society where everyone was honest and trustworthy through this method. That big stone filled with records became the village's most precious treasure, and everyone affectionately called it the "Stone of Honesty."
Little Thinking Time!
Kids, if you were a villager in Trust Valley, what do you think are the benefits of this method? What might be inconvenient about it?
> Benefits: Records are transparent, everyone can check, very hard to cheat! > Inconveniences: Stones are too heavy to move easily; if you want to record something new, you have to carve new letters, which takes a lot of work...

What is Blockchain?
Now, let's fast-forward to the 21st century. Smart computer scientists heard the story of Trust Valley and thought: "Wow, this 'Stone of Honesty' idea is wonderful! But stones are too heavy. Can we make a virtual, indestructible 'Stone of Honesty' using computers?"
And so, they really did it! The thing they invented is called Blockchain.
A "block" is like a stone in our story, except it's virtual and made of electricity. "Chain" means connecting these "stones" one after another, like a magical chain.
Blockchain has three core characteristics:
1. Decentralization —— Everyone Has a Copy
In our Trust Valley story, every household kept a copy of the stone. Blockchain works the same way! In the blockchain world, not just one person or one company keeps all the records—every computer on the network keeps a complete copy of all the records.
Imagine if your school had an attendance book, and only the teacher had it. What if the teacher accidentally lost it? But if every student had a copy of the attendance book, it would be much safer, right?
Blockchain works exactly like this—decentralization means no single person can control all the information alone. Information is distributed across many, many places, making the information much safer!
2. Immutability —— What Goes In Can't Be Changed
Remember? In Trust Valley, even if someone tried to secretly change the records on their own stone, others could spot it immediately. Blockchain has the same characteristic—once information is recorded on the blockchain, it's almost impossible to secretly modify it!
Why? Because blockchain uses super clever mathematical methods and cryptography (like a secret code game that only specific people can solve) to protect the data. If someone tries to modify a record, that record has a special "lock" attached to it. After modification, this "lock" breaks, and everyone can immediately see: "Oh no! Someone has tampered with it!"
It's like if you wrote a sentence on a piece of paper and then glued the paper to the wall. Later, if someone wanted to secretly take the paper down and change the words, when they pulled the paper off, the words would definitely be torn—because the words are written on the paper, you can't change them without damaging the paper!
3. Traceability —— Everything Is Clear
Another great feature of blockchain is that you can see all the historical records, just like reading a diary that will never disappear.
For example, if you recorded "Xiao Ming used 10 yuan to buy
