The Origin of Everything: A Journey Through 13.7 Billion Years
In the epoch before time was born, in the moment before space unfolded, the universe—that vast home we inhabit today—existed in a form that transcends the limits of human language. What kind of existence was it? Perhaps "nothingness" is not an accurate description, for nothingness implies complete absence, whereas that primordial state resembled infinite possibility, a dormant potential waiting to be awakened. In that most initial instant, all parameters we use today to describe the universe—temperature, density, energy—approached infinity, or rather, they simply did not possess meaning at that time. This represents the boundary of human understanding, the frontier of scientific exploration, and the birthplace of mythology and poetry.
Let us begin with a question: if the universe once did not exist, how did it transform from "nonexistence" to "existence"? This question has troubled philosophers for millennia and physicists for decades. The answer, perhaps, lies in the event that occurred approximately 13.7 billion years ago—what we call the "Big Bang." But please do not be misled by this name: the Big Bang was not an explosion occurring somewhere in space, as its name might suggest. It was the birth of space itself, the origin of time itself, the beginning of everything.

The Planck Era: The Boundary of Knowledge
When discussing the origin of the universe, we must first acknowledge the limits of human knowledge. The earliest period in cosmology that we can reliably describe ends after a moment called the "Planck Era." The Planck Era refers to the extremely brief interval between the temporal origin ($t = 0$) and approximately $10^{-43}$ seconds. How brief is this time? It is tens of billions of billions of billions times smaller than one second. At such minuscule timescales, all the familiar laws of physics break down.
Why do they break down? Because in the Planck Era, two key characteristics exist: First, the universe's temperature was extremely high—exceeding $10^{32}$ Kelvin; second, the universe's scale was extremely small—less than $10^{-35}$ meters. Under these extreme conditions, the four fundamental forces of nature—gravity, electromagnetism, the weak force, and the strong force—are believed to have been unified. It was a state beyond our current imagination: all forces were different manifestations of a single force, with no distinction between them, no differentiation.
The theoretical basis for this unified state comes from the successes of particle physics. We know that under appropriate energy and temperature conditions, originally different forces can be unified. The electroweak unification theory is a successful example: at everyday energies, electromagnetic and weak forces appear entirely different—the former governs visible phenomena like light, electricity, and magnetism, while the latter controls certain types of radioactive decay—yet at approximately $10^{15}$ giga-electron-volts of energy (equivalent to $10^{16}$ Kelvin in temperature), these two forces completely unify into a single "electroweak force." Physicists have verified this theory through particle accelerators in laboratories. Therefore, the logical extension is: at higher energies and earlier times, were these four forces also once unified?
Physics in the Planck Era involves the problem of quantum gravity. Quantum mechanics and general relativity—these two monuments of modern physics—have achieved tremendous success in their respective domains, yet they are incompatible at the Planck scale. General relativity interprets gravity as the curvature of spacetime, which holds perfectly at macroscopic cosmic scales; quantum mechanics describes the laws of the atomic and subatomic world, equally flawless at microscopic scales. However, when we need to simultaneously consider quantum effects and gravitational effects—for instance, at black hole singularities or the origin of the universe—both theories fail. We require a new theoretical framework that encompasses both the probability and uncertainty of quantum mechanics while incorporating the spacetime dynamics of general relativity.
String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity are currently the most active candidate theories for quantum gravity. String Theory proposes that the fundamental constituents of nature are not point particles but one-dimensional "strings"—different vibrational modes of these strings produce the various particles we observe. Loop Quantum Gravity attempts to directly quantize spacetime itself, viewing it as a network woven from discrete "loops" or "knots." Regardless of which theory prevails, the ultimate goal is establishing a "Theory of Everything" that can unifiedly describe all natural forces.

The Big Bang: A Beginning That Is Not a Beginning
When we mention the "Big Bang," we must clarify a common misconception: this term was first coined by Big Bang supporter Fred Hoyle in a 1949 radio broadcast with somewhat pejorative connotations—Hoyle himself supported the Steady State Theory, believing the universe was eternally unchanging. But this name has become deeply embedded in public consciousness, even though it is imperfect.
The core of Big Bang theory is not the "explosion" itself, but a universe continuously expanding and cooling. In 1927, Belgian priest and physicist Georges Lemaître proposed a startling idea based on Einstein's general relativity: the universe is expanding. He calculated and found that one solution to Einstein's field equations indicated the universe was not static, but either expanding or contracting. Two years later, Edwin Hubble confirmed this prediction by observing the recession velocities of distant galaxies: the farther a galaxy is from us, the faster it moves away—precisely the direct evidence of cosmic expansion.
