Chapter 1: Darwin's Legacy: The Birth of Natural Selection
In December 1831, a British Royal Navy surveying ship, HMS Beagle, set sail from Plymouth. On board was a 22-year-old, largely unknown naturalist—Charles Darwin. This nearly five-year circumnavigation would not only radically alter his personal intellectual trajectory but also quietly ignite one of the most profound revolutions in scientific history. Yet, at the time, neither Captain Robert FitzRoy, nor Darwin himself, nor any scholar ashore, could have foreseen that this seemingly routine surveying voyage would ultimately reshape humanity’s most fundamental understanding of life itself and our place in nature. The Tree of Life, a concept meticulously guarded by theology and philosophy, was about to be split open by a blade named “natural selection,” revealing its true, dynamic, branching, and non-teleological nature.
To grasp the revolutionary nature of Darwin’s theory, we must first return to the intellectual world he departed from. In early 19th-century Europe, biology was still shrouded in two powerful, intertwined paradigms: the Fixity of Species and Natural Theology. The Fixity of Species traced back to ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Aristotle’s “essentialism,” which held that each species was a divinely created, eternally unchanging type, its form and function perfectly aligned with a预设的 “essence.” Nature was like a grand mansion, each species a meticulously designed, non-interchangeable room. Natural Theology built upon this, pushing the notion of divine design to its zenith. Its core tenet was the Argument from Design: the exquisite adaptations in nature—the compound eye of a bee, the wing of a bird, the harmonious structure of the human body—were all seen as irrefutable evidence of a “divine engineer’s” meticulous planning. In his 1802 work *Natural Theology*, William Paley famously argued by analogy: if one found a finely crafted watch in a wilderness, one would infer a watchmaker; likewise, nature, a “machine” far more complex than any watch, must point to a divine creator. Within this framework, adaptation was static, completed, the perfect result of a single act of creation—not an ongoing process. Any seemingly “imperfect” or “redundant” structures (like the vestigial hind limb bones in whales) were explained as part of God’s overall aesthetic or mechanical balance—products of “wise design,” not evolutionary remnants.
Darwin was not the first to question species fixity. His grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, had already hinted at species change over time in *Zoonomia* (1794-1796); French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck more systematically proposed a mechanism of evolution based on use and disuse and the inheritance of acquired characteristics in his 1809 *Philosophie Zoologique*, attempting to explain how the giraffe’s long neck arose from ancestors constantly stretching to reach leaves. However, Lamarck’s theory lacked solid empirical evidence. Its core mechanism—the direct inheritance of traits acquired during an organism’s life based on its “desire” to adapt—was logically flawed and contradicted known reproductive phenomena, so it was not adopted by the mainstream scientific community. More importantly, neither Lamarck nor other early evolutionary thinkers provided a mechanism based purely on natural processes, devoid of预设目的 or will, capable of explaining the formation of complex adaptations. Their explanations for evolutionary “driving force” often relied on some inherent “progressive tendency” or organisms’ subjective “needs,” which still carried teleological overtones and failed to completely break free from the theological framework.
What truly paved the way for Darwin were breakthroughs in geology and biogeography. Geologist James Hutton proposed Uniformitarianism in 1788, arguing that Earth’s current landscapes were shaped by long, slow, observable natural processes (like erosion and sedimentation), not by catastrophic events like the biblical flood. His student Charles Lyell systematized this idea in his monumental *Principles of Geology* (1830-1833), using massive evidence to extend Earth’s age from the few thousand years biblically estimated to millions, perhaps hundreds of millions, of years. This provided the indispensable dimension of time for evolution—the formation of complex structures requires unimaginably long periods. Meanwhile, Darwin’s firsthand observations during the *Beagle* voyage, especially along the South American coast, the Cocos Islands, and crucially the Galápagos Islands, supplied key clues. He discovered that closely related groups (like finches and tortoises) on different islands exhibited systematic, predictable differences that closely matched each island’s unique ecological conditions (food types, climate, habitat). For example, the Galápagos finches (later called “Darwin’s finches”) displayed diverse beak shapes: some were thick and strong, like pliers for cracking hard seeds; others were slender and tweezer-like for picking insects or nectar; some were sharp and conical, for probing cactus flowers. This pattern of geographic variation strongly suggested species were not fixed but changed with the environment, and the direction of change was correlated with environmental pressures. This became the most intuitive and powerful initial evidence for natural selection.
