Hello, Big Feelings! Meet Your Emotion Buddies
The second your eyes flutter open in the morning, your feelings are already waving hello! Maybe you wiggle with excitement because today is your trip to the playground. Maybe you snuffle a little because you don’t want to get out of your cozy bed. Maybe you feel a flutter in your tummy because you’re going to try your first swimming lesson today. All of those wiggles, snuffles, and flutters? They’re all emotions, and they’re all totally normal. Everyone has them—your mom, your dad, your teacher, your pet goldfish (okay, maybe the goldfish only feels “hungry” and “happy to see you,” but still!).
Think of your emotions like a tiny, super-smart weather station that lives inside your chest. Some days it’s sunny and warm, and you feel bouncy and ready to play. Some days it’s cloudy and drizzly, and you feel quiet and want to cuddle a stuffed animal. Some days there’s a big thunderstorm, and you feel loud and wiggly and don’t know what to do with your body. And just like real weather, none of these feelings are “good” or “bad.” A rainy day isn’t mean for getting your shoes wet—it just means the plants need a drink. A thunderstorm isn’t naughty for making you hide under the blanket—it’s just the clouds doing a loud, boomy dance up in the sky. Your feelings are the same! There’s no such thing as a “bad” feeling, even if it feels yucky sometimes.
Today, we’re going to meet four of your new Emotion Buddies, who will live in your heart forever to help you understand what you need, every single day. They are: 1. Happy Buddy 🎉 2. Sad Buddy 💧 3. Angry Buddy 🔥 4. Scared Buddy 🛡️
Let’s go meet them one by one!

Meet Happy Buddy: The Sunshine in Your Chest
Happy Buddy is the one who makes you feel like you could bounce off the walls (but please don’t, okay? The walls don’t like that). When Happy Buddy is visiting, your cheeks hurt from smiling, your feet want to run super fast, and you want to share your favorite snack with everyone you see.
Let’s meet a friend who knows Happy Buddy very well: little rabbit Tuan Tuan! One bright morning, Tuan Tuan went to the forest community garden to pick carrots for breakfast. She dug her paws into the soft dirt, wiggled her nose, and pulled… and pulled… and pulled some more! Suddenly, *POP*! A giant carrot came out of the ground—so big, it was taller than Tuan Tuan’s whole body!
“WHOA!” Tuan Tuan yelled, her ears shooting straight up so high they almost touched the treetops. She bounced up and down so hard her paws left the ground. “This is the biggest carrot in the whole world! I have to share it with all my friends!” She dragged the carrot all the way to Squirrel’s tree, and cut off a big chunk for him. She hopped over to Little Bunny’s burrow, and gave her a thick slice. She even crumbled a tiny piece for the baby birds nesting in the bush, who cheeped “Thank you!” so loud it made Tuan Tuan giggle.
Happy Buddy was visiting Tuan Tuan that whole day, and do you know what Happy Buddy’s job is? Happy Buddy is like a little cheerleader in your chest, yelling “This is fun! Let’s do it again!” When Happy Buddy is around, you want to try new things—like climbing the tallest slide at the playground, or saying hello to a new kid at preschool, or tasting a new vegetable at dinner (even if you think you won’t like it). Happy Buddy also makes you want to share, because when you’re happy, you want everyone else to be happy too!

Meet Sad Buddy: The Hug You Carry Inside
Sad Buddy is the one who makes your chest feel a little tight, and your eyes feel watery, and you want to curl up under a blanket with your favorite stuffed animal. When Sad Buddy visits, you might feel like you don’t want to play, or you want to be alone for a little while. And that’s okay!
Let’s meet Little Monkey Pippi, who learned all about Sad Buddy last week. Pippi loved climbing the old apple tree at the edge of the forest—she could climb higher than any of her friends, and the apples at the very top were always the sweetest. One sunny afternoon, she spotted the plumpest, reddest apple at the very top of the tree, and she started climbing as fast as her little paws would go.
She stretched her arm out to grab the apple… and oops! Her foot slipped on a mossy rock, and she tumbled right down into a soft pile of leaves. “OUCH!” Pippi sat up, her knee scraped and oozing a tiny bit of red. She started crying, big wobbly tears rolling down her fluffy cheeks. “Boohoo! It hurts so much!”
Mama Monkey rushed over, scooping her up in a warm, fuzzy hug. “I know, baby, that hurt a lot. Let’s sit down and I’ll put a cool bandage on it, okay?” After the bandage was on, and Pippi had eaten a sweet honey popsicle Mama brought her, the tears stopped. Her chest didn’t feel tight anymore. She even smiled a little when she took a bite of the apple she’d fallen for (Mama had saved it for her!).
Sad Buddy’s job is super important: he’s like a little alarm bell inside your heart, ringing to say “I need help! I need a hug! I need to rest for a little while!” When you feel sad, crying isn’t silly—it’s how your body lets the sad feelings out, just like how you blow your nose when you have a cold. And the best part? Sad feelings don’t last forever. After a hug from someone you love, or a cuddle with your favorite stuffed animal, or even a good night’s sleep, your heart will feel light again.
Some grown-ups might say “Don’t cry!” or “Stop being sad!” But that’s like telling the rain to stop falling—it doesn’t work, and it makes you feel like your feelings are wrong. But your feelings are never wrong! Sad Buddy is just visiting to let you know you need some extra love.

Meet Angry Buddy: Your Little Protector
Angry Buddy is the one who makes your face feel hot, your fists clench, and you might want to yell or stomp your foot. When Angry Buddy visits, you feel like there’s a little fire burning in your tummy, and you just can’t make it go away. And that’s okay too!
Let’s meet Baby Bear Benben’s friend, Little Fox Fifi, who had a very angry day last week. Fifi had been saving up her shiny red sticker for three whole days, because she wanted to trade it with her friend for a sparkly dinosaur sticker. She put the sticker on the very top of her cubby at preschool, right where no one could miss it. But when she came back from snack time… the sticker was gone!
“WHERE IS MY STICKER?!” Fifi yelled, her face turning so red it matched her sticker. Her paws turned into little fists, and she stomped her foot so hard the floor shook. Her teacher came over right away, and sat down with her. “I see you’re really angry, Fifi. That sticker was yours, and someone took it without asking. That’s not fair, is it?” Fifi nodded, tears of anger rolling down her cheeks. The teacher helped her look around the classroom, and they found the sticker on Little Rabbit’s cubby—Rabbit had thought it was a sticker they could share, and had taken it to put on their own notebook. Rabbit said sorry, and gave Fifi the sparkly dinosaur sticker she’d been wanting, plus two extra sparkly stars. Fifi’s angry feeling went away, and she even shared her snack with Rabbit at lunch.
Angry Buddy’s job is to be your protector! He’s the little voice in your head that says “Hey! That’s not fair! That’s mine! Don’t let someone treat you badly!” Everyone gets angry sometimes—even your mom gets angry when someone cuts her off in traffic, and even your dad gets angry when he burns his toast. It’s okay to be angry, as long as you don’t hurt other people or break things when you’re angry. If you feel angry, you can stomp your foot, or squeeze a stres
