Every morning, when sunlight streams through your window and you stretch awake from a sweet dream, your tummy starts to rumble—that's your body telling you, "Hey there! I need some energy!" You jump out of bed and rush to the kitchen. The delicious aroma welcomes you—Mom has prepared a warm breakfast: a glass of white milk, two golden slices of bread, a perfectly round fried egg, and some bright red apple slices. Did you know that this seemingly simple breakfast actually contains wonderful gifts from nature and precious nutrients that our bodies desperately need?
When we sit at the dining table enjoying delicious food, we rarely stop to think: how exactly do these tasty foods become part of our bodies? When a juicy chicken leg enters our mouth, what wonderful journey does it take? How does it eventually help us grow taller and become stronger? These seemingly mysterious questions are actually closely related to an important branch of science—Nutrition Science!
To understand why eating is so important, we first need to understand the basic building blocks of our bodies. Imagine you have a pile of building blocks—you can use them to build a little house, a small car, or an adorable little animal. Our bodies are also built from countless tiny "blocks" called cells. Cells are too small to see with the naked eye, but they have incredibly important jobs: helping you grow taller, giving you energy to run, allowing your brain to think, healing your wounds when you're hurt... In short, without cells, there would be no life; without food, there would be no fuel for cells.
The human body is composed of approximately 37 trillion cells—a truly astonishing number! If you lined up all these cells in a row, you could stretch from Earth to the Moon several times over! Every single cell works continuously, and they need to "eat"—absorbing nutrients from the bloodstream—to gain energy, repair themselves, and divide to create new cells. It's the day-after-day, year-after-year efforts of these tiny workers that help us grow from crying newborns into who we are today.
Now you understand, don't you? Every time we eat, we're actually providing raw materials and energy for the 37 trillion "little workers" inside our bodies. Without enough materials, the "building" of our body can't be constructed or maintained; without enough energy, the cells have no power to work. So eating well isn't just about satisfying our taste buds—it's the deepest expression of love and responsibility for our bodies.
In nature, there are various substances, each with its own special role, working together to maintain our life activities. After long-term research, scientists discovered that the essential nutrients our bodies need can be mainly divided into six categories, known as the "Six Essential Nutrients." These are: Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals, and Water. They are like different musicians in an orchestra—each playing its own unique melody, and together creating the symphony of life.
Let's get to know these amazing nutrients one by one!
Proteins: The Foundation of Life
Proteins are the material basis of life—no protein means no life, and this isn't an exaggeration. Proteins exist in every corner of our bodies: our muscles are rich in proteins, allowing us to stand, walk,, and run; our skin and hair are primarily made of proteins, protecting our bodies and helping us look our best; even our blood contains important proteins, like hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from our lungs to every part of our body.
Imagine if our body were a building under construction—proteins would be like the construction workers and the bricks themselves. Not only do they provide the raw materials for building body tissues, but they also take on the important task of construction and repair. When you accidentally fall and scrape your knee, your body uses proteins to repair the damaged skin; when your muscles feel sore after exercise, proteins are busy helping your muscles grow stronger.
Where do we get proteins from? Foods rich in protein include: various meats (pork, beef, chicken, lamb, etc.), fish and seafood, eggs (chicken eggs, duck eggs), milk and dairy products (like yogurt, cheese), beans (such as soybeans, black beans, red beans), as well as nuts and seeds. Here's a little tip: foods with "meat" in their name or that look like meat usually have higher protein content; also, beans are excellent plant-based protein sources, especially suitable for kids who don't eat meat.
Carbohydrates: The Energy Source of Life
If proteins are the "building materials" of our bodies, then carbohydrates are the "fuel" that sustains life. When you run, jump, think, or even breathe and your heart beats, energy is being consumed. Carbohydrates are the most direct and convenient source of energy for our bodies. Just as cars need gasoline to run, our bodies need carbohydrates to function properly.
When carbohydrates enter our bodies, they are digested and broken down into a sugar called glucose. Glucose dissolves in the blood and, carried by the bloodstream, is delivered to every corner of our body for various organs and tissues to use. The brain is one of the organs with the highest energy demand in our bodies, and it relies almost entirely on glucose for energy. So when you go to school without eating breakfast, you might feel dizzy and unable to concentrate—that's because your brain is "hungry"!
Where do we find carbohydrates? Rice, noodles, steamed buns, and other grain foods are our most common sources of carbohydrates; potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, and other root and grain vegetables are also rich in carbohydrates; various fruits contain natural sugars and are also a form of carbohydrates; candies, cookies, cakes, and other sweets contain carbohydrates, but they usually have many added ingredients and are less nutritious than natural foods.
Fats: The Energy Storage Master
