Chapter 1 | The Magical Library and Little Bear Bobo
I. Bobo Pushes Open the Glowing Door
At the edge of the forest stood a tall building with a pointed roof. It had been there for a very, very long time, and little bear Bobo had never once set foot inside.
Today was different. It was Bobo's seventh birthday, and his mother gave him a small silver key. She said, "Go, my child. That library only opens its door on this one day. It will give you a gift, but you'll have to find the gift's name yourself."
Bobo gripped the key tightly and ran along the path to the library's door. The door was made of dark brown wood, carved with many little gears and letters. When he slid the key into the keyhole, all those letters lit up — as if someone had written on the door with golden fireflies.
*Click.*
The door opened.
Bobo tiptoed inside and found the space to be a hundred times larger than he had imagined. Row upon row of bookshelves stretched farther than his eyes could see, each shelf lined neatly with books. Some books were very old, their covers yellowed; others were still steaming, as if freshly printed. The air carried a faint scent of honey — the smell of old paper mixed with magic.
"Welcome, little Bobo."
Owl*)。
The voice came from a great owl perched behind the lending desk. She wore small round glasses and a badge on her chest that read "Head Librarian." She was Dr. Owl.
"This place is called the Wisdom Library. I look after it for a friend named Large Language Model, or LLM for short. He has gone out on an adventure today, so I am hosting you in his place."
"Large... Language Model?" Bobo tilted his head.
"Yes, that genius friend who has read every single book in this library, yet sometimes makes up stories. Come, let me introduce you to him."
Dr. Owl tapped the lending desk three times. A puff of golden smoke drifted up, and from within the smoke emerged a wondrous creature — something like a person, something like a book — wearing a top hat and a cloak dusted with starlight. He smiled and waved to Bobo.
"Hello, I am LLM. Everyone calls me 'L-L-M.'"
Bobo took an instant liking to this bookish friend. He did not yet know, however, that this friend — for all his wide reading — hid three little quirks that even Dr. Owl found troubling.
This is the central question we will tackle in this chapter:
> What exactly is a Large Language Model? > Why is it both brilliant and fallible? > What "accessory" do we need to make it reliable?
This is the first puzzle Bobo encounters in the library. Let's unfold the answer step by step.
---
II. The "Genius Friend" in the Library — Meeting the Large Language Model
2.1 Imagine the LLM as a Friend Who Has Read Everything
Dr. Owl took Bobo's small paw and led him to a giant mirror. Inside the mirror floated strange images: countless thin lines twinkling, each line connecting one number to another.
"You see them? These lines and numbers make up the LLM's brain."
"Then how does he actually 'read books'?" Bobo asked.
"He doesn't read the way you do, holding a book and turning pages line by line. Long before 2024, people all over the world gathered every book, article, webpage, and conversation they could find and fed them to him. He turned all the patterns inside those texts — who usually follows whom, which kinds of sentences tend to appear together — into numbers and stored them inside his brain."
"So he didn't 'memorize' all the books; rather, he 'learned' how words relate to one another."
In the language of scientists, these numbers and lines are called parameters. You can think of them as the knowledge weights inside the LLM's brain — when it sees a sentence, the billions of tiny numbers in its brain "vote" together to decide which character is most likely to come next.
The numeric values learned by the LLM (often 7B, 70B, or even trillions) | | 训练数据 / Training Data | 他读过的所有书 / Every book he has read | 用于训练 LLM 的大规模文本语料
Large-scale text corpora used to train the LLM | | 推理 / Inference | 回答问题的那一瞬间 / The very moment of answering | LLM 根据输入生成输出的过程
The process by which the LLM generates output from input |
2.2 Why Can the LLM "Continue a Conversation"?
"So when you say 'hello' to me," Dr. Owl raised a feather pen, "all the numbers inside the LLM's brain vote very fast. He doesn't really 'think' of an answer — he just calculates the most reasonable next sentence based on the patterns he has learned."
"That's why every sentence the LLM writes sounds as if somebody has said it before — because he learned precisely how 'somebody else would say it.'"
This "predict-the-next-character one at a time" way of working is called autoregressive generation. The newly predicted character becomes the input for predicting the next, and so on — and an entire article is born.
Bobo's eyes grew wider and wider. He suddenly thought of something: "Then... has he read more books than me?"
Dr. Owl adjusted her glasses: "Many, many more. If you have read two hundred books at the age of seven, he has read tens of millions. But —"
Her voice grew soft, like wind passing through pages:
"——he also has three little quirks."
---
III. The Three "Little Quirks" of the Genius Friend
3.1 The First Quirk: Knowledge Has a "Cutoff Date"
Dr. Owl pulled out a small booklet from her pocket, like a passport, with the cover stamped:
"Look," she said. "this is the last day he walked into the library and finished borrowing books."
"This is the knowledge cutoff. The moment LLM training finishes, his brain is 'sealed.' He does not know what happens after, nor does he remember newer books."
Bobo im
