In 140 BCE, in the grand palace of Chang'an, the young Liu Che, just sixteen years old, had just ascended to the throne as Emperor Wu of Han. This young emperor stood atop the magnificent halls of Weiyang Palace, gazing upon the vast territories of his empire, yet his heart was troubled. In the northern borders of the empire, powerful Xiongnu cavalry hung like a sword over his head, threatening the safety of the Han realm at every moment. Each autumn, when the horses grew fat and strong, these grassland conquerors would sweep southward, plundering border towns, killing civilians, and seizing wealth. Emperor Gaozu Liu Bang had once led 320,000 troops north to attack the Xiongnu, yet barely escaped total annihilation at Baideng Mountain, forced to buy temporary peace through marriage alliances. For over sixty years thereafter, Han China had bowed and scraped before the Xiongnu, offering annual tribute and enduring humiliation.
The young and ambitious Emperor Wu refused to accept this humiliating peace. He understood deeply that to completely eliminate the Xiongnu threat, Han China alone was insufficient. He needed allies, he needed to open new strategic possibilities. In the imperial court, he asked his ministers: Who would volunteer to travel to the Western Regions, to unite with those nations that also suffered under Xiongnu oppression, and jointly confront this northern enemy?
The ministers looked at each other in silence. The Western Regions—what a remote and mysterious place! It was said one had to cross thousands of miles of desert, climb snow-capped mountains, ford countless rivers, all while passing through Xiongnu territory. The roads were treacherous; of ten men who entered, nine would never return. Even more terrifying, the Xiongnu were notoriously brutal; anyone who dared oppose them would be exterminated. Who would volunteer for such a mission of almost certain death?
At this moment, a young palace attendant named Zhang Qian stepped forward. He was of average height and unremarkable appearance, hardly noticeable in the palace. However, when Emperor Wu's gaze fell upon him, he knelt without hesitation, his voice loud and firm: "Your servant Zhang Qian volunteers for this mission!"
No one knew what thoughts crossed this young man's mind when he made this decision. Perhaps loyalty to the empire, perhaps a desire for glory, perhaps simply the courage that an ordinary person summons at a critical moment in history. Whatever the reason, this moment of choice changed not only Zhang Qian's personal destiny but also reshaped the course of Chinese and even world history.
Zhang Qian was from Chenggu County in the Han Valley Commandery. His exact birth year is unknown, but he lived approximately from 200 BCE to 114 BCE. Historical records tell us little of his early years. We only know he came from a common family, not of noble birth, yet through his own abilities he rose to serve as a Lang Officer in the palace—a position of modest rank that nonetheless allowed him proximity to the emperor and insight into matters of state. Though the post was humble, it gave him an excellent opportunity to understand the empire's affairs and grasp the currents of his time.
In Emperor Wu's court, Zhang Qian witnessed firsthand this young ruler's great ambitions. He saw how Emperor Wu worked diligently to govern, reformed administration, and developed the economy; how he opened channels for honest counsel and gathered talented individuals; and most of all, how Emperor Wu's eyes burned with refusal to accept humiliation before the Xiongnu. In the heart of this young palace officer, a dream began to kindle: he would share his sovereign's burdens, win glory for the empire, and accomplish some great and world-changing deed.
When Emperor Wu issued the call for volunteers to serve as envoy to the Western Regions, Zhang Qian did not hesitate for a moment. He knew this was a rare opportunity, a moment when an ordinary person could participate in writing history. Though the road ahead was uncertain, though life and death hung in the balance, he was willing to stake everything on the remote chance—perhaps one in ten thousand—of success.
In 138 BCE, on an autumn day with clear skies, Zhang Qian bade farewell to his family and friends in Chang'an and set foot upon this road from which there might be no return. With him traveled over a hundred attendants, including a Xiongnu guide named Ganfu, who would later play an important role in Zhang Qian's journey. Additionally, Emperor Wu had特意 equipped him with a translator of Xiongnu origin, to facilitate communication with the Xiongnu people along the way. Thus, a small but historically significant delegation departed from Chang'an, beginning a long march toward the unknown Western world.
The delegation first needed to pass through Longxi Commandery, in what is now southeastern Gansu Province, then enter the Hexi Corridor. This corridor, sandwiched between the Qilian Mountains and the Gobi Desert, was the only route from the Central Plains to the Western Regions. However, at this time, the Hexi Corridor was firmly under Xiongnu control. The Xiongnu kings Huniye and Xiutu ruled this vast territory, maintaining numerous checkpoints and sentries along the route. Anyone attempting to pass through would be immediately captured or killed.
Zhang Qian had prepared his heart for this journey. He knew the dangers of this road, yet he walked it without hesitation. The delegation traveled by day and rested by night, avoiding Xiongnu patrols while struggling across the uninhabited Gobi. The autumn weather in the Hexi Corridor was already turning cold, and biting north winds raised clouds of yellow sand that cut like knives against their faces. Fresh water grew scarce, and food supplies dwindled. Some fell behind, others collapsed from thirst and hunger, and some broke down under the psychological strain of fear. Yet Zhang Qian always walked at the head of the group, inspiring everyone through his determination and actions.
After dozens of arduous days of travel, the delegation
