Pre-Age of Discovery: Global Maritime Traditions and Evolution Logic
In August 1415, the army of King João I of Portugal captured the North African stronghold of Ceuta, an event widely regarded by traditional historiography as the beginning of the Age of Discovery. Almost at the same time, in far East Asia, the fleet led by Ming dynasty navigator Zheng He was completing preparations for its seventh voyage to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans, planning to sail again to 23 states along the Indian Ocean coast. The subtle coincidence of these two maritime events thousands of miles apart on the timeline perfectly reveals the core characteristic of global maritime traditions in the pre-Age of Discovery: the maritime practices of different civilizations did not evolve in isolation, but formed three parallel developing maritime systems in the coastal areas of Eurasia and Africa. Their technological accumulation, institutional innovation and trade demand reached an intersection critical point in the 15th century, which finally triggered the first global ocean voyage wave in human history.
1.1 Evolution Logic of East Asian Maritime Tradition: From Tribute Channel to Trade Network
The evolution of East Asian maritime tradition is deeply bound to the political order of the Chinese empire and the shift of economic focus. Its core logic is "technological spillover under the tribute system": official navigation aims at gaining political prestige, while civilian navigation is driven by trade profits. Both have jointly promoted technological accumulation from near-shore navigation to ocean navigation, but never turned to the colonial model of external expansion, which is the core difference between the East Asian maritime system and the later European maritime system.
1.1.1 Route Exploration in Han and Tang Dynasties
The systematic ocean navigation practice in China can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty. According to the *Treatise on Geography* in the *Book of Han*, the Western Han court had opened an official route starting from Xuwen (present-day Xuwen, Guangdong) and Hepu (present-day Beihai, Guangxi), passing through Southeast Asia to the east coast of the Indian Peninsula and Sri Lanka (ancient "Yichengbuguo"), with a voyage of about 5 months. Along the way, it carried out tribute trade with states such as Duyuan, Yilumei and Chenli, and the official sent "translator leaders" on board to carry gold and silk to exchange for treasures such as pearls, glass and rare stones[^1]. The opening of this route marks that Chinese navigation shifted from near-shore navigation to ocean navigation, with the core driving force being the political demand of Emperor Wu of Han for territorial expansion and the pursuit of overseas exotic goods.
During the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Chinese navigation technology achieved its first breakthrough: on the one hand, the spread of Buddhism promoted cross-sea religious exchange. The Eastern Jin eminent monk Faxian set out from Chang'an to India for Buddhist scriptures in 399 AD, and returned from Sri Lanka by merchant ship in 411 AD, finally reaching Laoshan after experiencing a shipwreck. His work *Record of the Buddhist Kingdoms* details the routes of the Indian Ocean, monsoon laws and the situation of states along the way, which is the earliest existing ocean navigation document in China; on the other hand, the prototype of the compass "Sinan" began to be used in navigation, solving the problem of identifying direction in rainy weather. In the Tang Dynasty, with the economic focus beginning to shift south, Guangzhou became the largest foreign trade port in the country, and the "Shibushi" (Maritime Trade Commissioner) was established to manage overseas trade. The "Guangzhou Tonghai Yidao" (Guangzhou Sea Route to Foreign Countries) recorded in the *Treatise on Geography* of the *New Book of Tang* had formed a mature route from Guangzhou, through Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean to the Persian Gulf and East Africa, with a total voyage of about 40 days, and there were multiple supply ports along the way, with trade scale far exceeding that of the Han Dynasty.
1.1.2 Technological Revolution and Trade Explosion in Song and Yuan Dynasties
The Song and Yuan dynasties were the golden age of Chinese maritime tradition. The technological breakthroughs and trade explosion formed a positive cycle, pushing Chinese navigation to the forefront of the world. At the technical level, three core inventions completely changed the possibility of ocean navigation: first, the popularization of watertight compartment technology, which divided the cabin into multiple independent waterproof areas, so even if part of the cabin was damaged and flooded, the whole ship would not sink, greatly improving the safety of ocean navigation. This technology was about 1000 years earlier than that in Europe; second, the comprehensive application of the compass in navigation. The *Pingzhou Ketan* of the Northern Song Dynasty records that "the boat commander knows the geography, watches the stars at night, watches the sun during the day, and watches the compass when it is cloudy", marking that compass navigation has become a conventional navigation technology; third, the manufacturing technology of large Fuzhou ships is mature. The wreck of a Song Dynasty ship unearthed in Quanzhou Bay is 24.2 meters long and 9.15 meters wide, with an estimated displacement of more than 400 tons
