In 490 BCE, the Persian Empire crossed the Aegean Sea and landed at the Marathon plains of Greece. The Persians sought to conquer this land that gave birth to Western philosophy and democratic institutions. However, they encountered unexpected resistance—Athenian soldiers fought desperately against the invaders at the marshes of Marathon. The outcome of this battle would determine not only the fate of Greek city-states but the trajectory of Western civilization itself.
As the battle neared its end, Athenian commander Miltiades dispatched a messenger named Pheidippides to bring the news of victory back to Athens. Pheidipides was an experienced long-distance runner, and legend has it that he had previously run from Athens to Sparta in two days to request reinforcements. That day, he ran again, crossing fields and hills, delivering the glad tidings to the anxiously waiting Athenian people. He reportedly uttered only one sentence: "Joy to you, we have won!" (Nike nike!) before collapsing and dying. Though this legend may have been embellished over centuries, its core spirit—the human act of conveying hope through running and transcending limits—has endured for over two and a half millennia, inspiring countless runners to this day.
Modern scholars have examined the Pheidippides story with greater scrutiny. Historians point out that while Herodotus's "Histories" does record a man named Pheidippides being sent to Sparta for reinforcements before the battle, it does not mention him running back to Athens with news of victory. Nevertheless, when Greek writer Michel Breal suggested including the marathon in the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896, he drew precisely upon this legendary tale. Breal's proposal received support from Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic movement. Thus, a story born of war and sacrifice found renewed life in the context of peace and sport.
On April 10, 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens. At the marble stands of the Panathenaic Stadium, thirteen runners lined up at the starting line of the marathon. The course followed the legendary route Pheidippides supposedly ran—from the Marathon Bridge to the center of Athens. Greek water carrier Spyridon Louis crossed the finish line first in 2 hours, 58 minutes, and 50 seconds, becoming the first Olympic marathon champion in modern history. When he crossed the finish line, thunderous cheers erupted from the stands—this joy belonged not only to personal glory but also carried the Greek nation's longing to revive its former glory.
The early Olympic marathon courses were not standardized. The 1900 Paris Olympic marathon involved running circles around a horse racing track, with competitors jostling for position with horses in dusty conditions; the 1904 St. Louis Olympic course was criticized as "a hell for human endurance"—extreme heat, dust, unpaved roads, and raw water available along the route made the race highly controversial; the 1908 London Olympics first adjusted the distance to 26 miles, 385 yards (approximately 42.195 kilometers), which later became the standard marathon distance, allegedly to allow the start to be visible from a window in the Royal Lodge at Windsor Castle. The standardization of the marathon distance underwent a long evolution, and it was not until 1921 that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) officially established 42.195 kilometers as the standard marathon distance.
If the Olympic marathon represents the highest level of elite athletic competition in challenging human limits, then mass-participation marathon events reveal a deeper value of the sport—providing ordinary people the opportunity to run alongside elite athletes on the same course, experiencing that emotion of transcending oneself. This transformation occurred in the latter half of the 20th century, profoundly changing the social attributes and cultural connotations of marathon running.
The Boston Marathon in the United States stands as a pioneer of mass marathon running. The event began in 1897 with only 15 participants; today, it attracts over 30,000 runners annually, becoming one of the oldest and most prestigious mass-participation marathons in the world. Boston is renowned for its strict qualifying standards—runners must achieve time standards specific to their age groups in certified events before being eligible to register. This "qualifying" mechanism not only ensures participant standards but also motivates countless runners to train diligently.
The 1970s witnessed a true explosion of marathon running globally. After moving to Central Park in 1976, the New York City Marathon achieved tremendous success, with participation growing from 2,143 runners in 1976 to over 14,000 by 1981. The event was distinguished by its "inclusivity"—an open attitude toward different races, genders, and ages. The New York City Marathon's founder, Fred Lebow, was himself a marathon runner who believed that the marathon should not be the exclusive domain of elite athletes but rather a platform for everyone to challenge themselves.

Entering the 21st century, marathon running has continued to gain momentum worldwide. According to the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the number of certified marathon events globally grew from approximately 350 in 2000 to over 700 by 2020. Concurrently, the number of finishers has grown exponentially—over 1.2 million people worldwide completed a marathon in 2019. Behind this number lies an increasing number of individuals choosing to write their life stories through the 42.195-kilometer journey.
