> *"In the beginning, before there were calendars or clocks, our ancestors looked up at the night sky and saw something miraculous. They saw their future, their destiny, and a connection to something much larger than themselves."* > > *"起初,在日历和时钟出现之前,我们的祖先仰望夜空,看到了神奇的事物。 *

The Magic of the Night Sky /
Imagine yourself standing outside on a clear summer night. The sun has disappeared below the horizon, and slowly, like magic, thousands of tiny lights begin to appear in the sky. First there are a few, then dozens, then hundreds, until the entire heavens are sparkling with diamond-like points of light.
For thousands of years, children just like you have stood beneath this same sky. Their parents did, their grandparents did, and their great-great-great-grandparents did too—going back thousands of years to the very first humans who ever looked up and wondered about those mysterious lights.
But here's what makes our story special: among all the civilizations that ever existed on Earth, one group of people developed an extraordinary system for understanding the connection between the stars and human life. That system is called (Zǐ Wēi Dǒu Shù), which means "Purple Star Astrology" or more literally, "The Numerical Technique of the Purple Constellation."
And it all began with a child who loved to look at the stars.
The Legend of Fu Xi /
Long, long ago—some say about 5,000 years ago—there lived a legendary figure named 伏羲氏 (Fú Xī Shì), also known as Fu Xi. According to ancient stories, Fu Xi was one of the three sovereigns of ancient China, a wise ruler who helped humanity move from a state of chaos and confusion into a more organized and peaceful society.
But here's what made Fu Xi truly special in our story: he was a child who never stopped asking questions about the world around him.
The ancient texts tell us that Fu Xi spent many hours watching the sky, the earth, and the waters around him. He noticed patterns everywhere—patterns in the way water rippled, patterns in the shapes of clouds, and most importantly, patterns in the way the stars moved across the sky night after night, year after year.
The Birth of the Ba Gua /
One day, according to the legend, Fu Xi was walking along the banks of the 洛河 (Luò Hé), the Luo River. Suddenly, he saw a most unusual creature emerge from the water—a magnificent 龙马 (Lóng Mǎ), or "dragon horse," unlike anything anyone had ever seen before.
This magical horse had scales like a fish and a mane that flowed like clouds. But what captured Fu Xi's attention was the strange pattern on its back—a pattern of black and white dots arranged in a most peculiar way. Fu Xi studied this pattern carefully, and it inspired him to create a system of eight trigrams that he called the 八卦 (Bā Guà), or "Eight Trigrams."
These eight trigrams became the foundation of Chinese philosophy, medicine, divination, and astronomy. They represented the fundamental forces of nature: heaven, earth, thunder, wind, water, fire, mountains, and lakes. But more importantly, they represented the idea that the universe follows patterns—and if we can understand those patterns, we can understand the world around us, and even ourselves.
The Creation of the Calendar /
Fu Xi didn't stop with the trigrams. He continued watching the sky day after day, year after year, until he noticed something remarkable: the stars didn't move randomly. They moved in predictable patterns that repeated over and over again.
He noticed that the sun rose in the east and set in the west every single day. He noticed that the moon grew from a tiny sliver to a full circle and back again every month. And he noticed that certain star patterns (what we now call constellations) appeared in the sky at certain times of the year—like a giant celestial clock marking the seasons.
From these observations, Fu Xi created the first Chinese calendar, called the 先天八卦历法. This calendar divided the year into 360 days, with each day represented by one degree of the celestial circle. It helped farmers know when to plant their crops, helped fishermen know when to expect certain fish, and helped everyone plan their lives according to the natural rhythms of the heavens.
This was the beginning—the very first step on the journey that would eventually lead to the creation of 紫微斗数.
The Big Dipper: Heaven's Great Ladle /
Of all the star patterns in the sky, none has captured human imagination quite like the 北斗七星 (Běi Dǒu Qī Xīng), the "Seven Stars of the Northern Dipper," also known as the Big Dipper. This distinctive pattern of seven bright stars looks like a giant ladle or soup spoon floating in the northern sky.
Finding Your Way with the Big Dipper /
For thousands of years, the Big Dipper has served as humanity's most reliable night sky navigation tool. Here's how it works:
1. Find the Big Dipper first: Look for seven bright stars arranged in the shape of a ladle with a handle. In the Northern Hemisphere, it's visible every night of the year.
2. Use the pointer stars: Two stars at the edge of the "bowl" are called the pointer stars. Draw an imaginary line through these two stars, and it will lead you to a special star.
3. Find Polaris: Extend that line about five times the distance between the two pointer stars, and you'll reach 北极星 (Běi Jí Xīng), the North Star, also called Polaris.
The North Star is incredibly special because it always stays in the same position in the sky—no matter where you are in the Northern Hemisphere, it always points exactly north. This made it invaluable for travelers, sailors, and explorers throughout human history.
The Seven Stars of Destiny /
But in Chinese astrology, the Big Dipper is much more than a navigation tool—it's a map of destiny itself. According to ancient Chinese tradition, each of the seven stars of the Big Dipper has its own personality, its own power, and its own influence on human affairs.
Here's what each star represents:
