The Story of Little Ming and the Lemonade Stand
That summer, the weather was getting hotter and hotter. After school, Little Ming walked home, feeling extremely thirsty. He passed by a community garden and saw several kids playing games, all covered in sweat. A sudden idea popped into Little Ming's head: "With such hot weather, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a glass of ice-cold drink!"
Right at that moment, Little Ming noticed a lemon tree next to the garden, full of golden-yellow lemons hanging from it. His eyes lit up, and an even better idea popped into his mind: "I can pick some lemons, go home and make lemonade, then sell it to those thirsty kids!"
Little Ming ran home excitedly and told his mom about this idea. After hearing it, his mom smiled and asked, "Do you think other kids would be willing to spend money to buy your lemonade?" Little Ming thought for a moment and nodded firmly: "Yes! Because they're thirsty too, and their homes might not have lemon trees."
So, with his mom's help, Little Ming got to work. He picked five lemons from the garden, found sugar and cups from the kitchen. The next day after school, he set up his little stand next to the garden—and "Little Ming's Lemonade Stand" officially opened for business!
At first, no one came to buy. Little Ming was a bit worried, but he didn't give up. He started proactively introducing his product to kids passing by: "This is homemade lemonade, nice and cold and sweet, fifty cents a cup!" Slowly, people started stopping to try it. When the first cup of lemonade was sold, Little Ming was so happy he jumped for joy.
By the end of that day, Little Ming had sold fifteen cups of lemonade and earned seven dollars and fifty cents. He carefully put the money into his piggy bank, feeling wonderful inside. More importantly, he suddenly understood something: helping others solve problems can bring you rewards!
What is Entrepreneurship?
Little Ming's story teaches us a very important lesson: when you discover a problem that others need solved and come up with a way to solve it, that's the beginning of entrepreneurship.
Let's learn a new word—创业. In English, entrepreneurship is called "Entrepreneurship," a word that comes from French. Originally, French people used this word to describe those who dared to take risks and venture into business. Later, this word spread around the world and became a special term describing the process of "discovering opportunities, creating value, and receiving returns."
To put it simply, entrepreneurship is the process where one person or a group of people discovers a certain problem or need in society, then figures out how to create a product or service to solve that problem or meet that need, while receiving returns from doing so. This process might sound a bit complicated, but it actually happens in every little moment of our daily lives.
You might ask: "What's the difference between entrepreneurship and regular work?" This is an excellent question. When we do regular work at a company, usually someone tells us what to do, we do it, and we receive a fixed salary. But in entrepreneurship, you need to discover problems yourself, come up with solutions yourself, and bear the risk that things might succeed or fail. Of course, if you succeed, the returns you receive can also be much greater than regular work.
Who is an Entrepreneur?
In Little Ming's story, who is the entrepreneur? That's right—it's Little Ming himself! An 创业者 (Entrepreneur) in English refers to someone who engages in entrepreneurial activities. An entrepreneur is someone who dares to discover problems, figures out ways to solve them, and is willing to put in effort and take risks to realize their ideas.
Let's look at what characteristics entrepreneurs have:
First, entrepreneurs are good at observing and discovering problems. Little Ming noticed on his way home that the weather was very hot, that kids were sweating from playing, and that there was a lemon tree next to the garden. These seemingly ordinary observations are actually the keen eyes that every entrepreneur must have. Real entrepreneurs are always watching, listening, and thinking: What inconveniences do people have? What things do people want but can't find? What problems can't be solved by current methods?
Second, entrepreneurs dare to try and innovate. Little Ming didn't just stop at the thought "I'm so thirsty, this is难受," but turned that idea into a real action—making and selling lemonade. Entrepreneurs don't just daydream; they take action, they turn their ideas into reality. Even if they might fail at first, they aren't afraid to try.
Third, entrepreneurs are willing to persist and work hard. When Little Ming set up his stand on the first day, no one came to buy. If it were most people, they might have given up long ago. But Little Ming didn't give up—he proactively introduced his product and finally sold the first cup. This spirit of not giving up when facing difficulties is also one of the most important qualities of entrepreneurs.
Fourth, entrepreneurs learn from their mistakes. No one is perfect, and entrepreneurs make mistakes too. But real entrepreneurs don't get discouraged by mistakes—they analyze what went wrong and how to do better next time. Later, Little Ming might discover that fifty cents a cup was too cheap, or the lemonade wasn't cold enough, or he could add some other flavors. These are all experiences learned gradually through practice.
What Problems Can Entrepreneurship Solve?
You might wonder: "Entrepreneurship sounds impressive, but what problems can it actually solve?" Let's find out together.
Entrepreneurship can meet people's needs. Little Ming's lemonade met the kids' need to drink something cool on a hot summer day. In the world we live in, people have all kinds of needs—some need food, some need clothing, some need housing, some need transportation, some need entertainment and learning products. When someone can
