Chapter 1: Geographic and Historical Foundations
Before becoming a dazzling global tech hub, Shenzhen was once a land gently cherished by time. Its story begins with geography and history—mountains and seas shaped its bones, while years deposited its soul. From being established as a county in the Eastern Jin Dynasty to becoming a modern city, what transformations has this land undergone? And what enabled it to soar during the tide of reform and opening up? All of this is hidden within its geographic codes and historical footprints.

Land and Sea in Harmony
Shenzhen's terrain resembles a gently tilting cradle: the northeast features rolling low mountains and hills, while the southwest consists of alluvial plains and coastline. Hills and terraces account for about 50% of the total area, plains 25%, with the remainder being water bodies and developed land. Major mountains include Yangtai Mountain, Wutong Mountain, and Tanglang Mountain. Wutong Mountain, the highest peak at 943.7 meters, stands like a silent guardian overlooking the city. The 260-kilometer winding coastline forms natural harbors such as Shenzhen Bay, Dapeng Bay, and Daya Bay. Historically, these bays served as shelters for fishing boats; today, they are the foundation of modern ports. Moreover, Shenzhen boasts many islands, like Dapeng Peninsula and Neilingding Island, enriching the coastal ecology.
Climate and Rivers: Source of Life
Shenzhen has a subtropical monsoon climate: warm, humid, with four distinct seasons. The average annual temperature is about 22.4°C, and annual precipitation ranges from 1800 to 2000 mm, with rain and heat occurring in the same period—ideal for crop growth. This climate allows rice, lychees, longans, bananas, and other subtropical fruits and crops to thrive, providing early residents with abundant food sources.
Regarding rivers, Shenzhen's rivers are mostly short and swift, flowing directly into the sea. Major rivers include the Shenzhen River, Maozhou River, Guanlan River, and Longgang River. The Shenzhen River is the most strategically significant—originating from Wutong Mountain and flowing west into the Pearl River Estuary, it spans about 37 km. It serves not only as a natural boundary between Shenzhen and Hong Kong but also as a historically important transportation route. Though short, these rivers nourished villages and farmlands along their banks, fostering early agrarian civilization.
Bounties of Resources
These lands also harbor abundant natural resources. Hills once yielded silver and iron mines, particularly famous around the Ming Dynasty's Dapeng Fortress. Coastal salt fields flourished as early as the Song Dynasty, such as the Dongguan Salt Field, providing crucial tax revenue for the court. Dense forests covered most mountainous areas, supplying ample wood for shipbuilding, construction, and daily life. Fertile soil allowed agriculture to persist for generations, especially in the Pearl River alluvial plain—a microcosm of a "land of fish and rice." Moreover, coastal fisheries are rich, with oysters, prawns, and groupers available year-round, sustaining the Tanka people's aquatic lifestyle.
Administrative Evolution: From Bao'an to Shenzhen
Ancient County Establishment: Birth of Bao'an
Shenzhen's formal inclusion in the central administrative system began in the sixth year of the Eastern Jin Dynasty's Xianhe era (331 AD). That year, the Eastern Jin established Dongguan Commandery in Lingnan, administering six counties including Bao'an County, with the county seat at today's Nantou Ancient City. This marked the beginning of unified administrative governance over the Shenzhen area. Subsequent dynasties—Tang, Song, Yuan—saw multiple adjustments in administrative affiliation, but the name "Bao'an" persisted. During the Tang, Bao'an belonged to Guangzhou Prefecture; under the Song, it was part of Guangnan East Road, Guangzhou; and in the Yuan, it fell under Guangdong Dao, Guangzhou Lu. In 1394 (27th year of Hongwu, Ming Dynasty), Bao'an County was abolished and merged into Dongguan County. However, in 1573 (first year of Wanli, Ming Dynasty), the imperial court carved out parts of Dongguan to re-establish Xin'an County, with the county seat still at Nantou, under the jurisdiction of Guangzhou Prefecture. Xin'an County's territory covered most of today's Shenzhen, the New Territories of Hong Kong, and parts of Dongguan and Zhongshan. The names "Bao'an" and "Xin'an" alternated over the following centuries, but the core region remained unchanged.
Ming and Qing Dynasties: Border Changes

Late Qing to Republican Era: Border Turbulence and County Renaming
During the late Qing Dynasty, the administrative landscape of Bao'an County (Xin'an County) underwent fundamental changes following the Treaty of Nanking in 1842, which ceded Hong Kong Island to Britain. The original Xin'an County territory was split by the Shenzhen River: the southern part, including Hong Kong Island and surrounding islands, fell under British control, while the northern part remained under Guangdong's jurisdiction. This division caused the original county seat at Nantou Ancient City to shift from a coastal frontier to an inland border area, diminishing its strategic importance. After the Second Opium War in 1856, the southern part of the Kowloon Peninsula was ceded. In 1898, the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory leased the New Territories to Britain for 99 years. According to the treaty, areas north of the Shenzhen River and south of Shenzhen (present-day Luohu, Futian, Nanshan, etc.) remained under Guangdong's control, but the border became even more complex, creating a unique "one county, two systems" situation. This administrative fragmentation drastically reduced Bao'an County's actual jurisdiction to only inland hilly regions, stunting economic and social development for a long period.
