Chapter 1: The Magical Nile: The Eternal Gift of the River of Life
---
The first rays of morning sunlight had just touched the land of Egypt, and the whole world was still wrapped in a gentle golden veil. In a small village by the banks of the Nile River, a little boy named Ali poked his head out of his small hut made of mud and reeds, rubbing his eyes hard. Today was a special day—his grandfather had promised to take him to see the most magical sight along the Nile.
Ali's village was called "Abydos," which in the ancient Egyptian language meant "the place of the distant" or "the land of memory." The village was not large, with only a dozen or so families. Their houses, though simple, all faced the Nile, as if paying the most sincere respects to this great mother. Ali was already seven years old, and in those seven years, he had seen the Nile every single day, but he never knew that this seemingly calm river held an earth-shaking secret.

"Come quick, Ali!" Grandfather's hoarse and kind voice called from outside the hut. "If we're late, we'll miss the best part!"
Ali quickly put on his only pair of sandals—those belonged to his father, and though they were a bit too big, they were quite comfortable once tied tight—then dashed out of the house. The morning air was cool, carrying a fragrance that mixed soil and fresh grass. Ali took a deep breath, feeling his whole lungs filled with this fresh air.
Grandfather was already waiting for him under the old fig tree at the village entrance. This fig tree was the oldest tree in the village, said to be over three hundred years old. Its trunk was so thick that it took several people to wrap their arms around it, and its branches spread luxuriously like a giant green umbrella, sheltering the villagers from wind and rain. Grandfather loved sitting under the tree telling stories to the children, and it was through these stories that Ali had grown up.
"Quick, quick!" Grandfather took Ali's hand and walked toward the Nile. "Today you'll see something you'll never forget in your whole life!"
Ali followed Grandfather through emerald green farmland one after another. Strangely, these fields had very peculiar shapes—they were not the neat square plots Ali had seen in books, but narrow and irregular shapes, like green ribbons spread across the earth. Even stranger, each field's edge was bordered by thin earth ridges, as if someone had built low walls around the fields.
"Grandpa, why are our fields shaped so strangely? Why build these low walls all around them?" Ali couldn't help but ask.
Grandfather stopped, bent down, and with his wrinkled hand stroked those earth ridges, a kind smile appearing on his face. "These earth ridges are called 'field ridges,' and they're one of the most important inventions of us Egyptians!" Grandfather said. "As for why the fields are shaped this way, you'll understand soon enough."
Ali's curiosity was thoroughly ignited. He quickened his pace, almost jogging to keep up with Grandfather. He knew that although Grandfather was just an ordinary farmer, he had more stories in his belly than anyone else in the village. Grandfather often said his great-great-grandfather had been a high priest in the time of the pharaohs. Though the family later fell on hard times, those ancient wisdoms had been passed down from generation to generation.
Finally, the Nile appeared before them.
First Glimpse of the Nile: The Miracle of Water and Life
Ali's eyes instantly brightened. Although he saw the Nile every day, every time he saw it, he couldn't help but exclaim in admiration. This river was so beautiful! It was like a giant blue ribbon, winding its way from the southern lands, carving out an emerald green corridor through the golden desert. The river's surface was extremely wide, at least ten times wider than the widest stream Ali had ever seen. The water was clear and calm, and occasionally white birds would skim across the surface, leaving behind ripples.
"Ali, do you know what this river is called?" Grandfather asked.
"The Nile!" Ali answered proudly. "The teacher said the Nile is the longest river in the world, flowing all the way from very far away to where we live."
"Right, you're absolutely correct," Grandfather nodded. "The Nile is over six thousand kilometers long, longer than the distance from Egypt's southernmost to northernmost points! But, Ali, do you know why we Egyptians call the Nile our mother?"
Ali shook his head. He had never really thought about this question. In his world, the Nile was just the Nile, as natural as the sun rising every day and the moon hanging in the sky at night.
Grandfather found a large stone by the riverbank and sat down, beckoning Ali to sit beside him. "Then look carefully around you and tell me what you see."
Ali looked around. He saw golden desert, emerald green farmland, the quietly flowing river water, and wisps of cooking smoke rising from the village in the distance.
"Desert," Ali said. "I see desert, very very big desert."
"Right, continue," Grandfather encouraged him.
"I see green farmland, our village, and... and the Nile!" Ali suddenly understood something. "Grandpa, I get it! Because of the Nile, there's green here, there are villages, there are people! If it weren't for the Nile, there would only be desert, nothing at all!"
Grandfather smiled contentedly, the smile carrying pride and also a profound emotion. "You've only got half right, Ali. The Nile indeed brings us life, but more importantly, it brings us a magical gift every single year."
"A magical gift?" Ali asked curiously. "What gift?"
Instead of answering directly, Grandfather pointed to the river surface in the distance. "Do you see those things floating on the river?"
Ali squinted and looked carefully. Indeed, on the distant river surface, there were some brown things, like mud, floating slowly. They drifted with the river current, getting closer and closer, and gradually, the entire river surface turned into a murky brow
