In the beginning, there was only darkness and the wind.
In those primordial times, our ancestors knew nothing of calendars or written records. They lived by the simple rhythms of sunrise and sunset, hunting and gathering, breathing in harmony with all creation. Yet within this primal existence, something extraordinary was taking shape—the gradual awakening of consciousness, the first stirrings of curiosity about the heavens above and the patterns that governed all things.
The ancient Chinese were a people who gazed upon the stars with wonder and reverence. When night descended upon their camps, as fires dimmed and wild beasts retreated into silence, they noticed patterns in the heavens that seemed to hold secrets of the universe itself. The brightest star held its position with unwavering constancy. The moon waxed and waned in a cycle of transformation. When certain celestial configurations appeared, the seasons would shift, bringing changes to the land below. These observations, accumulated over countless generations, gradually wove themselves into a grand tapestry of cosmic understanding—a tapestry that would become the wellspring of all Chinese divination traditions.
The Story: The Boy of the Starfire Tribe
Long ago, there lived a tribe called the Starfire, who had made their home for generations upon a fertile plain in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. Their chief was an elderly but wise man, respectfully called the Stargazer. In his youth, he had witnessed a terrible flood that claimed countless lives, but from this catastrophe he gained profound wisdom: there existed laws governing heaven and earth that operated beyond human control, and only by understanding and aligning with these laws could humanity thrive upon the land.
The Stargazer had a grandson named Xiao Chen, a boy with bright eyes and delicate features, but possessed of a quiet and introspective nature unlike the other children who loved to run and play. His greatest joy was to lie alone on the grasses at the edge of the camp, gazing up at the vast canopy of stars for hours on end. The tribespeople would whisper that this child shared a special bond with the heavens, that one day he would surely inherit the Stargazer's mantle.
Yet Xiao Chen's parents held a different view. In those harsh times, hunting and farming were the foundations of tribal survival. Hunting provided meat and hides, farming yielded grain and stability—but what value could stargazing offer? An elderly man might earn respect through celestial observation, but a young person who spent his days gazing skyward, neglecting his duties, would face only hunger and hardship. Xiao Chen's father often raged at his son's idleness, while his mother would only sigh softly, watching the boy with tender eyes that held both love and worry.
It was in Xiao Chen's twelfth year that he faced the ritual of passage into adulthood—the ancient tradition of the Starfire people requiring all twelve-year-olds to survive alone in the wilderness for three days and three nights. On this day, Xiao Chen ventured into the forest beyond the village, beginning the first great adventure of his life.
On his first night, Xiao Chen huddled beneath an ancient oak, gazing up at the starlight filtering through the canopy. He noticed that the stars were not scattered randomly across the sky, but formed certain recurring patterns. Seven especially bright stars formed what elders called the Big Dipper, their handle always pointing northward. He also beheld a luminous ribbon stretching across the heavens—the Milky Way, elders said, where the souls of ancestors dwelt in eternal peace.
On the second night, something extraordinary occurred that Xiao Chen would remember for the rest of his life. As he gazed upon the brightest star, he noticed its light seemed to tremble, and then an intensely brilliant point of light streaked across the sky, trailing a long tail before vanishing beyond distant mountains. It was a meteor—something Xiao Chen had never witnessed before. After the meteor's disappearance, silence returned to the heavens, but Xiao Chen's heart raced with questions. Where did the stars come from? Why did they shine? What connection did they bear to the affairs of the human world below?
On the third day, Xiao Chen began consciously recording his observations. Without paper or brush, he carved marks into the earth with stones. He discovered that if he observed the same star at the same time each night, its position shifted subtly—though it appeared in roughly the same region of the sky, it was always slightly further east than the night before. This revelation filled Xiao Chen with excitement, for he realized he might have found a way to measure time itself.
When the three days ended and Xiao Chen returned to the tribe, he shared his discoveries with his grandfather. Upon hearing the boy's account, a glimmer of light sparked in the old man's clouded eyes. He grasped Xiao Chen's hand tightly and spoke with a trembling voice: "Child, do you understand what you have found? This is what our ancestors have sought through countless generations. The changing positions of the stars record the passage of time, measure the turning of seasons, and guide the timing of planting and harvest. What you have done is precisely 'guanxiang shoushi'—observing celestial signs to determine the seasons."

The Stargazer resolved to pass on all his knowledge to Xiao Chen. In the days that followed, the ancient and mysterious wisdom that flowed from the old man's lips took root in the boy's heart like seeds sprouting in fertile soil.
"Long, long ago," the Stargazer began slowly, "when our ancestors still lived in caves, they had already begun observing the changing patterns of heaven and earth. They discovered that ten fundamental energies or forces existed in the world, alternating with one another in endless cycles of renewal. Our ancestors gave each of these ten forces a name—these became the 'Ten Heaven
