Chapter 1: What is Life? — Exploring the Wonderful World of DNA

Have you ever looked closely in the mirror and noticed that the color of your eyes, the shape of your nose, or the curve of your ears look so similar to one of your parents? Even the way the corners of your mouth turn up when you smile, seems like a "copy" of someone?
This similarity is no coincidence. When your mom and dad decided to have a baby, each of them contributed a "mysterious recipe," and every detail in that recipe determines what you look like, what your voice sounds like, and even what you're good at or what little troubles you might have.
So here come the questions:
- What exactly is this "recipe"?
- Where is it hidden in the body?
- Why do children "resemble" their parents, yet are also different from them?
The entire story of this little book starts with a simple question: deep inside every cell in your body, there is a "life instruction manual," and the name of this manual is DNA — which stands for Deoxyribonucleic Acid
Thought Experiment: Magnifying a Grain of Rice to the Size of a Mountain
Let's do a "thought experiment" first — no equipment needed.
Imagine you hold a super magnifying glass in your hand. It's so powerful that it can magnify a single grain of rice to the size of a mountain. If you keep turning up the magnification, what will you finally see?
Scientists have already thought about this question for you. Since the 17th century, the first brave scientists aimed their exquisitely polished glass lenses at a drop of rainwater, a leaf, even their own saliva. They saw a group of incredibly tiny "little rooms" — each "little room" is a cell.
Your body is made up of approximately 37 trillion (37,000,000,000,000) of these little rooms.

Let's understand the story happening inside your body in a more vivid way.
Your Body Is a Company
If we compare your entire body to a large company, then:
- 心脏是 **发电厂**,源源不断地把血液泵到全身;
- The heart is the **power plant**, constantly pumping blood throughout the body.
- 大脑是 **中央指挥部**,控制着你的思维和动作;
- The brain is the **central command center**, controlling your thoughts and movements.
- 胃是 **食品加工厂**,把你吃下去的东西变成能量;
- The stomach is the **food processing factory**, turning what you eat into energy.
- And cells are the most basic **employees** of this company.
Each cell has its own job. Some cells specifically carry oxygen (red blood cells), some receive signals (nerve cells), and some block bacteria (skin cells).
What Machines Are Inside a Cell?
Continuing our "magnifying glass journey." Suppose your lens now shows a single cell — a tiny ball about 0.01 millimeters in diameter. Zoom in further, and you'll see that inside the cell is not empty but contains various "machines."
These "machines" are called organelles in biology, and each has its special function:
But among all organelles, there is one particularly important little room — the nucleus. Continuing with our city analogy, the nucleus is the cell's "archives," storing the most important documents — all the secrets about you.
From Human Body to DNA: A Marvelous "Shrinking Journey"
Let's see this scale change using a flowchart:
```mermaid flowchart TD A["Human Body 人体"] --> B["Organs 器官"] B --> C["Cells 细胞"] C --> D["Nucleus 细胞核"] D --> E["Chromosomes 染色体"] E --> F["DNA 脱氧核糖核酸"] ```
> 📏 尺度的奥秘 The Mystery of Scale: > > - 人体的大小大约是 1.5 米。 > - A human body is about 1.5 meters tall. > > - 细胞的大小大约是 0.01 毫米,是一根头发丝直径的十分之一。 > - A cell is about 0.01 millimeters — one-tenth the diameter of a hair. > > - DNA 链的宽度大约是 2 × 10⁻⁹ 米(2 纳米),大约相当于一个原子的 10 倍大。要看见它,需要一种特殊的"光"——X 射线。 > - The width of DNA is about 2 × 10⁻⁹ m (2 nm), roughly ten times the size of an atom. To see it, you need a special "light" — X-rays. > > - 也就是说,从你的身体到 DNA,相当于从整个
> - 也就是说,从你的身体到 DNA,相当于从整个 地球 的直径,一下子缩小到一根头发丝的宽度。整个旅程跨越了大约 7 个数量级——也就是说,每一个 DNA 分子都比你的身体小了差不多 1,000 万倍! > - In other words, from your body to DNA, it's like shrinking from the diameter of the entire Earth all the way down to the width of a single hair. The whole journey spans about 7 orders of magnitude — meaning each DNA molecule is about 10 million times smaller than your body!
听起来不可思议,对吗?但这正是科学家们经过几百年的努力才确认的事实。下面就让我们沿着这条"缩身之路"一直走下去,看看 DNA 究竟长什么样子。
Sounds incredible, right? But this is exactly what scientists have confirmed after hundreds of years of effort. Now let's continue along this "shrinking road" and see what DNA really looks like.
1.3 一个老园丁的发现:父母如何"传递"你的长相
1.3 A Garden Gardener's Discovery: How Parents "Pass On" Your Looks
在 180 多年以前,有一个住在欧洲小国家(现在叫做捷克)的老爷爷,他的名字叫 格雷戈尔·孟德尔(Gregor Mendel, 1822–1884)。他是一位修道士,也是一位非常热爱种豌豆的人。
More than 180 years ago, there was a grandpa living in a small European country (now called the Czech Republic) named Gregor Mendel (1822–1884). He was a monk, and also a person who really loved growing peas.
孟德尔注意到一件事:当高高的豌豆和矮矮的豌豆"结婚"(植物学家叫它"杂交"),生出来的豌豆宝宝全都长得又高又挺。但是当这些高个子豌豆再相互"结婚"后,它们的孩子里既有高个子,也有矮个子——而且高矮的比例差不多总是 3 : 1。
Mendel noticed something: when tall pea plants "married" (botanists call it "crossing") with short pea plants, all the pea babies that were born grew tall and strong. But when these tall peas "married" each other, their children included both tall and short ones — and the ratio was almost always 3 : 1.
这是为什么?孟德尔想出了一个非常聪明的解释:
Why? Mendel came up with a very clever explanation:
> 每个生物身体里,都藏着两套"指令"。一套来自妈妈,一套来自爸爸。这两套指令就像两个人各自给了一张"卡片",每个特征都由这两张卡片共同决定。 > Every living thing carries two sets of "instructions" inside. One from mom, one from dad. These two sets of instructions are like two cards given by two people, and each trait is jointly decided by these two cards.
孟德尔把这两张"卡片"叫做 基因(gene,来自希腊文 *gen*, 意思是"出生")。从那以后,人们终于慢慢明白:原来每一个生物都像一份"双拼套餐",每一道菜(也就是每一个特征,比如眼睛颜色、身高、是不是会卷舌头)的配方,都是两份合在一起的。
Mendel called these two "cards" genes (from the Greek word *gen*, meaning "birth"). Since then, people finally slowly understood: it turns out every living thing is like a "combo meal," and the recipe for each dish (that is, each trait, such as eye color, height, or whether you can roll your tongue) is a combination of two portions.
思考环节:让我们用彩色豆子重做一遍孟德尔的实验
Reflection Time: Let's Repeat Mendel's Experiment with Colored Beans
你不需要真的去种豌豆。只需要准备几种不同颜色的糖豆或者塑料珠,就能模拟孟德尔的发现:
You don't need to actually grow peas. You just need a few different colors of jelly beans or plastic beads to simulate Mendel's discovery:
