Introduction: The Value and Framework of Olympic Rule Studies
When the final of the men's artistic gymnastics team event at the 2024 Paris Olympics entered the last rotation on the horizontal bar on August 5, the atmosphere inside the Bercy Arena was thick with tension. Chinese gymnast Zhang Boheng landed his routine with near-perfect execution, prompting deafening cheers from the crowd that made many believe the gold was already secured for China. But when Japanese gymnast Daiki Hashimoto landed with one foot clearly out of bounds, boos rained down, and the judges' final deduction was only 0.1 point, allowing Japan to edge out China by 0.3 point for the gold. Within 24 hours, the hashtag #HashimotoFootOutofBounds racked up over 3 billion views on Chinese social media, as countless viewers angrily questioned: "What is the basis for this 0.1 point deduction? Who actually makes the Olympic rules?"
Few members of the public realize that this 0.1 point is a microcosm of 128 years of Olympic rule evolution: from Pierre de Coubertin's "amateurism first" value setting when he drafted the competition rules for the first modern Olympics in 1894, to the "upper limit adjustment for difficulty加分" rule passed by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) just before the 2024 Paris Olympics. Olympic rules are never cold, lifeless clauses filed away in cabinets, but the product of multi-force博弈 among fairness, spectatorship, commerce, and politics, and the core framework that shapes the landscape of competitive sports, determines athletes' careers, and defines the value of the Olympics.
Over the past two decades, research on Olympic rules has remained stuck between two extremes: on one hand, some scholars reduce rule history to a checklist of technical clause iterations, attributing rule changes to a linear narrative of "technological progress" or "management needs," while ignoring the tangled force博弈 behind the rules. For example, the cancellation of the "amateur athlete only" restriction at the 1988 Seoul Olympics seemed on the surface to be "adapting to the trend of sports professionalization," but behind it were 30 years of negotiations between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and global professional sports leagues, commercial pressure from TV broadcasters demanding top athletes participate to boost ratings, and political demands from developing country National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to break the monopoly of Europe and the US on amateur sports. On the other hand, other scholars take rules as a single analytical dimension, either focusing on their impact on judgment fairness or on their transformation of event spectatorship, but rarely bring the three into a unified analytical framework. According to statistics from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), as of June 2024, there are 127 academic papers with "Olympic rules" as the theme, of which only 32 involve the impact analysis of rule changes, and among these 32, only 4 involve both spectatorship and fairness, with none systematically analyzing the impact of rules on athletes' training orientation. This fragmented research status means we cannot explain "why rules are changed this way," nor predict the chain reactions of rule adjustments, let alone respond to the core proposition of the future direction of Olympic rules.
Based on this, this book proposes the core research question: How do the changes of Olympic rules over the past century simultaneously affect the spectatorship of events, competitive fairness, and athletes' training orientation? What is the interactive logic among the three, and how do the demands of different博弈 subjects shape the path of rule evolution? To answer this question, this book defines Olympic rules as the aggregate of three levels, and establishes an analytical framework of "rule change - triple impact -博弈 logic," taking the first modern Olympics in 1896 as the starting point and the 2024 Paris Olympics as the end point, to systematically sort out the complete context of 128 years of Olympic rule evolution.
(Olympic Rules)
- **竞赛规则**:针对具体运动项目的技术规范、判罚标准、场地器材要求,如足球越位规则、体操动作难度评分规则、游泳转身规则等,是直接塑造竞技过程的核心规则;
- **治理规则**:针对奥运会本身的组织管理规则,包括参赛资格认定、兴奋剂检测与处罚、赛事仲裁、奥运遗产管理等,是保障赛事有序运行的基础规则;
