Chapter 1: Your Safety Superpowers Are Waiting!
Have you ever dreamed of being a superhero? Maybe you've imagined yourself flying through the sky, saving the day, or having incredible powers that help people in need. Well, here's something amazing that most people don't know: YOU already have a superpower inside you, right now, waiting to be discovered! This superpower doesn't require a cape, a mask, or a secret identity. In fact, it's one of the most important superpowers you could ever have—and once you learn how to use it, you can be a hero every single day.
What is this incredible superpower, you ask? It's the power to keep yourself safe.
Now, before your eyes glaze over and you start thinking this sounds boring, stick with me for just a moment. I know what you're probably thinking: "Safety? That sounds like something my parents nag me about. 'Be careful!' 'Look both ways!' 'Don't run near the street!'" But here's the secret that most kids—and even most grown-ups—never figure out: safety isn't about being scared of everything. It's not about avoiding all the fun things in life because they might be dangerous. No, no, no! Real safety superpowers are about being prepared, being aware, and being confident. They're about knowing how to handle all kinds of situations so you can explore the world, have adventures, and enjoy life—without worry.
Think about the superheroes you know from movies and books. What makes them special? They don't just have cool powers—they also know how to use those powers wisely. They pay attention to what's happening around them. They notice things that other people miss. And when something seems wrong, they trust that little voice inside their heads that says, "Hey, wait a minute. Something isn't quite right here."
That's exactly what safety superheroes do too.
Meet Your Safety Superhero Guides
Every great superhero has a mentor, someone wise and experienced who helps them learn the ropes. Batman had Alfred. Harry Potter had Professor Dumbledore. Spider-Man had... well, he figured it out mostly on his own, and look how stressful that was for him! That's why, for your safety superhero journey, you have not one but two amazing guides to help you along the way.
First, let me introduce you to Ollie the Owl.
Ollie is the wisest owl in the entire Whispering Woods. He's seen just about everything in his many years of life, and he's learned that the best way to stay safe is to use your brain before you use your feet. Ollie has big, beautiful golden eyes that can spot the tiniest movement from very far away. But more importantly, he's learned to really *see* things—not just look at them, but actually pay attention and notice what they're doing.
Ollie will teach you about something called situational awareness. That's a fancy way of saying "knowing what's going on around you." You know how sometimes when you're walking through a parking lot, your mom or dad holds your hand extra tight and looks around? That's them using their situational awareness. But with a little practice, you can develop this superpower too!
And second, there's Rosie the Rabbit.
Rosie is brave—so brave that she's not afraid of anything... well, almost anything. She once got startled by a falling acorn and jumped three feet in the air, but we don't talk about that. What makes Rosie special isn't that she's never scared; it's that she knows something incredibly important: being brave doesn't mean you're not afraid. Being brave means you do the right thing even when you ARE afraid.
Rosie will help you understand that making safe choices takes real courage. When you choose not to climb that really tall tree because you know you might fall, that's not being chicken—that's being brave. When you tell an adult that someone is making you uncomfortable, even though you're scared of what might happen, that's super-brave. And Rosie is living proof that small creatures can have the biggest hearts and the strongest courage of all.
Together, Ollie and Rosie are going to be your guides through this safety adventure. They'll share stories, teach you tricks, and help you practice your safety superpowers until they become as natural as breathing.
Your First Superpower: Awareness
Let's start with the most fundamental safety superpower of all: awareness. Now, awareness might not sound as exciting as flying or super-strength, but trust me—it's the foundation that all the other superpowers are built on. Without awareness, you might as well be a superhero with a blindfold on.
So what exactly is awareness? Let me tell you a story about a time when Ollie demonstrated this superpower in action.
One beautiful spring morning, Ollie was sitting in his favorite oak tree, watching the forest below. He noticed a family of deer moving through the clearing—mother, father, and two little fawns with wobbly legs. Everything seemed peaceful and normal. But then Ollie noticed something else. One of the fawns kept looking back over its shoulder, its ears perked up and alert. It had stopped eating and was staring intently at the thick bushes on the far side of the clearing.
"Hmm," hooted Ollie to himself, tilting his head. "That's interesting."
You see, the fawn had sensed something—maybe a sound, maybe a movement, maybe just an instinct—that something wasn't quite right. The fawn didn't know *what* was wrong, but it knew *something* was wrong. And that little fawn was right. A moment later, a coyote emerged from the bushes, looking very disappointed that its surprise attack hadn't worked.
The deer's awareness—their attention to their surroundings—had saved them. They weren't panicking or running around like headless chickens (not the best expression, but you get the idea). They simply noticed something unusual, trusted that feeling, and were ready to act if they needed to.
This is exactly what awareness looks like for humans too. It's about noticing the world around you—not in a paranoid, nervous way, but in a calm, observant way. It's about asking yourself simple questions like:
- Does this situation feel normal?
- Are there any adults around who can help if needed?
- Is there an easy way to get out of this place if I need to leave quickly?
- Does anything seem "off" in a way I can't quite explain?
These questions take only a second to ask yourself, but they can make a huge difference in keeping you safe.
Here's a fun exercise you can try right now: Look around the room you're in. Don't just glance—really look. How many doors can you see? Are they open or closed? What's on the walls? Is there a clock somewhere? What does the ceiling look like? Can you hear any sounds from outside?
Congratulations! You just practiced your awareness superpower. See, I told you it wasn't that hard!
Now, Ollie wants to share something special with you. He calls it the Superhero Scan. Every few minutes throughout your day, take a moment to do a quick mental scan of your surroundings. You can do it while you're walking to school, playing at the park, or even sitting in the classroom. Just notice three things:
1. Where are the people? Look around and notice where the adults are. Are there teachers, parents, or other responsible people nearby?
2. Where are the exits? In case you need to leave quickly, where are the doors, windows, or other ways out?
3. How are you feeling? Trust that gut feeling we talked about earlier. Are you feeling calm and happy? Or is something making you feel uneasy?
Once you make the Superhero Scan a habit, you'll be amazed at how much more aware you become. You'll start noticing things you never noticed before, and you'll feel more confident and in control wherever you go.
Your Second Superpower: Listening to Your Gut
If awareness is the foundation of safety superpowers, then listening to your gut is the roof—the part that protects you from the biggest storms. And this is one of the most important things I can teach you in this entire book.
Have you ever had a feeling that s
