Welcome to the Kingdom of Materials
Welcome to the Kingdom of Materials
---
Now imagine the building block in your hand. Where did it come from? How was it made? Why is it red instead of blue or green? Most importantly, when you stack it with other blocks, why does it stay in place instead of falling apart?
If you've ever wondered about these things, congratulations—you're already thinking like a real materials scientist!
Our Adventure Begins Here
Morning sunlight filters through the curtains into your room. You sit up in bed and stretch. A new day begins. Now, close your eyes for just one second and think: What things have you touched since waking up this morning?
Was it your blanket? Your pillow? Your pajamas? The slippers on the floor? Or your own warm hands?
Now open your eyes and look around your room. What do you see?
The bed—what is it made of? It might be wood, or a metal frame with a soft mattress on top. The wardrobe—probably wood, with metal handles on the doors. The curtains—fabric or plastic. The floor—wooden flooring, tiles, or carpet.
Look around—you'll find that everything is made of different "materials." Materials, simply put, are the "ingredients" used to make things. Just like making a cake requires flour, eggs, and sugar, making anything requires various materials.
The Big Family of Materials
The world of materials is like one giant family, home to all kinds of members. Let me introduce you to some of the most important ones!
The Metal Family: Members of this family shine brightly and feel cool to the touch. Iron, aluminum, copper, gold, silver—they all belong to the metal family. The doorknobs in your house are metal, the frame of your bicycle is metal, and your mom's gold necklace is metal too. The special thing about metals: they're hard, can conduct electricity, and can be hammered into different shapes.
The Plastic Family: Plastics are one of the most common materials in our modern world. They're lightweight, waterproof, don't conduct electricity, and can be shaped into almost anything. Toys, cups, chairs, plastic bags—members of the plastic family are everywhere. But they do have one downside—most plastics take a very long time to break down in nature, so we need to recycle them carefully.
The Wood Family: Wood comes from big trees—nature's gift to us. It feels warm to the touch and has a gentle, pleasant smell. Wood can be made into furniture, paper, pencils, and even the blocks in your hands! But remember—every piece of wood was once part of a tree, so let's use it thoughtfully!
The Ceramic Family: Ceramics are an ancient and wonderful material. Many of your bowls, plates, and cups are made of ceramics. What makes ceramics special: they're smooth, hard, and heat-resistant. Some ceramics are even used on spacecraft to help humans explore space!
The Fiber Family: Cotton, wool, silk, nylon—all belong to the fiber family. Fibers can be woven into fabric to make clothes, scarves, and blankets. Some fibers come from nature (plants or animals), while others are synthetic (made by scientists in factories).

An Exploration Starting from Building Blocks
Let's turn our attention back to the block in your hand.
It's an ordinary plastic building block. It's red (or blue, or yellow—depending on what color your block is). Its shape is a rectangular cube—kind of like a tiny brick. Its surface is smooth and cool to the touch (if you haven't been holding it).
But have you ever wondered how this block was made?
To answer this question, we need the help of a materials scientist. A materials scientist is like a doctor for materials—they study materials, understand their "personalities" and "characteristics," and then figure out how to make them work better or create entirely new materials.
How Is the Block Made?
Materials scientists tell us that a plastic building block goes through several stages before it becomes what it is:
(Finding the Raw Materials)
What are plastics made from? The answer is—oil! Yes, the same oil that fills up cars. Oil is a black, sticky liquid found deep underground. After being processed in factories, oil can be turned into tiny plastic pellets—like fine grains of sand. These plastic pellets are the raw ingredients for making blocks.
(Melting Through Heat)
The plastic pellets are fed into a giant machine that heats them to a very high temperature until they melt into a red, flowing liquid—kind of like melted chocolate. This process is called plasticization.
(Molding into Shape)
The melted plastic liquid is injected under high pressure into a carefully designed mold. Whatever shape the mold is, the plastic becomes! Your block mold is shaped like a rectangular cube, so when the plastic liquid goes in, it becomes a rectangular cube. This process is called injection molding.
(Cooling and Solidifying)
After the plastic liquid enters the mold, it needs to cool down. Just like water turns to ice in a freezer, plastics become solid when they cool. This process is called solidification.
(Removing from the Mold)
Once cooling is complete, the mold opens up, and a brand-new red block is born! Taking it out of the mold is called demolding.
(Quality Check)
Finally, every single block goes through strict inspection—right color? Complete shape? Correct size? Only blocks that pass all the checks get packed into boxes, shipped to stores, and finally end up in your hands.

The Gates of the Kingdom of Materials
Now, let's walk through the gates of the Kingdom of Materials and discover what treasures lie within this magical world.
What do materials scientists study every day? They mainly research three big questions:
