Our Bodies: A Wonderful Map
Think about the last time you stood in front of a mirror and looked at your face carefully. What did you see? Two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and two ears. Each part has its own unique shape and special place. Without any one of them, you wouldn't be the complete you. Did you know that from this moment, you've already begun a wonderful journey of exploration—a journey to discover your very own and one-of-a-kind "body map"?
Our bodies are like extremely detailed maps, with every part being an important location on that map. You may have visited different cities and seen different scenery, but did you know that your own body is like a tiny universe, containing secrets far more magical and complex than any map? Starting today, we'll turn the pages of this wonderful "body atlas" together, getting to know every "stop" and "scenery spot" that makes up our bodies.
Getting to Know Our Bodies: A Wonderful Journey from Head to Toe
Let's start from the very top of our body—the head. The head is the body's most important control center, like the main unit of a supercomputer. Our brain lives right here. The brain is where we think, feel, remember, and dream. Close your eyes and try to imagine a marshmallow in shape and texture—that's what the brain looks like. But don't actually try to touch it! The brain is protected by the hard skull!
The Wonderful World of the Head
On top of your head grows hair. Each strand of hair grows from a hair follicle in your scalp. An average adult has about 100,000 to 150,000 strands of hair, and we lose about 50 to 100 strands every day. This is completely normal because new hair keeps growing. Hair isn't just for looking good—it also protects the scalp from sunburn and helps regulate head temperature.
Now, let's get to know the parts of our face. Eyes are one of the most amazing organs in our body. Did you know that human eyes can distinguish about one million different colors? Eyes work a bit like a camera: light passes through the cornea, enters the eye through the pupil, and then cells on the retina receive this information and send it to our brain, and then we "see" things.
The nose is not just a passage for breathing—it's also responsible for most of our sense of smell. Humans can distinguish about 10,000 different smells! Inside our nose are smell receptors, which work like tiny receivers that catch odor molecules in the air and then tell our brain what scent it is.
The mouth is an important tool for eating and speaking. Inside our mouth, teeth and tongue are two essential helpers. An adult typically has 32 teeth, and they're divided into different types: the thin ones at the front are incisors, used for biting food; the pointy ones beside them are canines, used for tearing food; and the wide ones at the back are molars, used for grinding food. Each tooth is like an independent little warrior with its own "armor"—enamel, which is the hardest substance in our body.
The tongue is a magical organ covered in taste buds. Taste buds let us experience five basic tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. Did you know that every area of the tongue has different sensitivity to different tastes?—the tip of the tongue is most sensitive to sweet, the back is most sensitive to bitter, and the sides are most sensitive to sour and salty.
The Neck: An Important Bridge Connecting the Body
The head connects to the rest of the body through the neck. The neck looks thin and long, seeming quite fragile, but actually it contains many important structures. The cervical vertebrae are made up of seven small bones. They're like a string of little building blocks, supporting the head while allowing us to turn it up, down, left, and right.
In front of the cervical vertebrae are the trachea and esophagus. The trachea is the passage for air to come in and out—you can feel the soft spot at the front of your throat; that's the entrance to the trachea. The esophagus is the tube that carries food to the stomach. When you swallow something, it slides down through this passage.
On both sides of the neck are the carotid arteries—important blood vessels that deliver blood to the brain. When a doctor checks your body, sometimes they'll feel your neck to sense the pulse of the carotid artery. If you gently place your hand on your neck, you can feel that regular rhythm. That's your pulse—it shows your heart is working normally, pumping blood throughout your body.
The Torso: The Core Area of the Body
Leaving the neck, we come to the torso. The torso is the largest part of the body, divided into two areas: the thorax and the abdomen. Two superstars live in the thorax: the heart and the lungs.
The heart is about the size of your fist. Don't let its small size fool you—it's the hardest-working muscle in your body! The heart beats about 100,000 times a day, pumping about 7,000 liters of blood, which flows to every corner of your body. The rhythm of your heartbeat is called heart rate. When you're resting, it's about 60 to 100 beats per minute. When you're exercising, your heart beats faster because your body needs more oxygen and energy.
On each side of the heart are lungs. Lungs are the organs we use for breathing. When we inhale, air enters through the nose or mouth, passes through the trachea, and reaches the lungs. When we exhale, the lungs push out carbon dioxide. Lungs look like two pink balloons, but actually they're made up of millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli. If you unfolded all these alveoli and spread them out flat, their total surface area would be about the size of a tennis court!
The abdomen houses many important organs. The stomach is like a very elastic bag where food is ground up and mixed with gastric juices. The large intestine and small intestine absorb nutrients from food. The liver is the body
