Chapter 1 The Quiet World Before

1.1 A World Without Machines
Imagine a world with no cars, no electric lights, no running water, no phones.
It's the year 1750. Deep in the middle of England, a small village sits at the foot of a green hill. An eight-year-old girl named Lily lives there with her mother, her father, and her little brother Tom. The village is called Grey Willow. A little stone bridge crosses a slow river, and on the other side lives Thomas the miller. Lily does not know it yet, but her day will be very different from yours.
It is still dark. Lily opens her eyes. The sky outside is a quiet blue-grey. A few stars remain, and the moon is about to set. Her room is cold, because the linen sheet her mother washed two days ago is cool against her skin. There is no radiator humming, no night-light glowing, no soft toy to hug. There is only a straw mattress, a wool blanket, and a small cat curled up at her feet.
Here is the first big question of our story: *In a world with no electricity, no petrol, and no steam engine, what did people do after they woke up?* The list sounds simple: draw water, light a fire, bake bread, milk the cow. But every single task is about one thing—power. The power of human muscles. The power of animals. The power of wind. The power of water. The whole world, in 1750, runs on these four kinds of power.
A great change starting in the mid-1700s, when people began to use steam, coal, and machines instead of only muscles and animals. / In physics, the energy that makes things move or happen.
Let's remember this moment in history with one big number:
$$ 1750 \;\longrightarrow\; \text{Four "old powers": people, animals, wind, water} $$
More than 250 years later, you only need to press a button to turn on a light, boil water, or wash clothes. What happened in between? The whole story begins right here, on Lily's quiet morning.

1.2 Lily's Morning: Waking Up a Whole House
1.2.1 First Task — Drawing Water
As soon as the sky turns a little lighter, Lily gets dressed and follows her mother outside. Behind their cottage is an old stone well. Its rim is covered in soft green moss. A long rope hangs down into the well, and at the end of the rope is a wooden bucket.
Mother says, "Lily, first three buckets for washing dishes, then two for the porridge, then two for Daisy the cow. Seven buckets in total."
Let's do Lily's math with her:
- Each bucket holds about 10 litres, which weighs about 10 kilograms.
- Seven buckets = 70 litres = about 70 kilograms.
- An eight-year-old girl weighs about 25 kilograms.
- **The water Lily lifts every day is nearly three times her own body weight.**
This is what "human power" really looks like: hard, slow, and unequal. Strong people can lift more; small people can lift less. No machine comes to help Lily. She must bend, grip, and pull—again, and again, and again.
> Today, every time you brush your teeth, wash your face, drink water, flush a toilet, or cook, water is working for you. Try this with your parents: how many litres does your family use in one day? How does all that water reach your house "by itself"?
1.2.2 Second Task — Making Fire
Now the water is in. The next step is to make a fire. There is no lighter (they have not been invented yet) and no gas stove. Lily must use flint and tinder to create a spark.
``` 打火的小步骤 / Steps to Make a Spark:
1. 准备一小撮干燥的火绒(可以是干草、树皮、棉絮)。 Prepare a small pinch of dry tinder (dry grass, bark, or cotton).
2. 用钢片(钢铁做的刀子)用力敲击火石。 Strike a piece of steel (a knife) hard against the flint stone.
3. 火星溅到火绒上,轻轻吹气,让火星变成小火苗。 Sparks fall onto the tinder; gently blow until the spark becomes a small flame.
4. 把火苗放进灶膛,慢慢加上小木棍,再加大木柴。 Place the flame in the fireplace; add small sticks, then bigger wood. ```
听起来很浪漫,对不对?可是,在寒冷的清晨,莉莉的手指冻得通红,她要花大约 5 到 10 分钟才能让火苗稳定下来。在这 5 到 10 分钟里,她什么饭都做不了,什么水都烧不开。
Sounds romantic, right? But on a cold morning, Lily's fingers are red and stiff. It takes her about 5 to 10 minutes to get a steady flame. During those 5–10 minutes, she cannot cook anything, and she cannot boil any water.
> 💡 小知识 / Fun Fact > 中国人在 6 世纪就发明了火柴的"祖先"——一种涂了硫磺的小木棒。但是真正能"一擦就着"的安全火柴,要到 1855 年才被发明。也就是说,莉莉生活的年代,距离"一擦就着"还有 100 多年。
> The Chinese invented an early ancestor of the match in the 6th century—a small stick coated in sulphur. But the safe match you can strike in one easy move was not invented until 1855. So in Lily's time, people still had another 100 years to wait.
1.2.3 第三件工作——烤面包和挤牛奶
1.2.3 Third Task — Baking Bread and Milking the Cow
火生起来以后,妈妈开始揉面做面包。面粉是上周爸爸去镇上的磨坊磨的,麦子是去年夏天自家田里收的。妈妈要做的是全麦黑面包——颜色深、味道粗、但很顶饱。
Once the fire is going, Mother begins to knead dough. The flour was ground last week by Father at the town's mill. The wheat was harvested from their own field last summer. Mother is making a wholemeal brown loaf—dark in colour, rough in taste, and very filling.
烤面包需要大约 45 分钟。在这 45 分钟里,莉莉不能闲着,她要去挤牛奶。
Baking takes about 45 minutes. Lily cannot sit still; she must go milk the cow.
莉莉家有两只奶牛,一只叫 Daisy,另一只叫 Petal。Lily 每天早上要分别挤它们。她坐在一只小木凳上,把木桶放在奶牛的肚子下面,双手一前一后地挤,牛奶"嗒嗒嗒"地流进桶里。一头奶牛要挤大约 5 分钟,两头就是 10 分钟。Lily 每天能从两只奶牛身上挤出大约 6 到 8 升牛奶——这些牛奶是全家人一整天的食物来源:早餐喝粥加奶,午餐煮汤加奶,晚餐做奶酪。
Lily's family has two cows: Daisy and Petal. Every morning she milks them one by one. She sits on a small wooden stool, places the bucket under the cow, and presses her hands in a steady rhythm: *squeeze, release, squeeze, release*. Each cow takes about 5 minutes, so 10 minutes in total. From the two cows she gets about 6 to 8 litres of milk a day. This milk is the family's food for the whole day: in the morning porridge, in the midday soup, and in the evening cheese.
让我们用一张流程图,把 Lily 一个清晨的"动力循环"画出来。
Let's draw a flowchart to show Lily's morning "power cycle."
```mermaid flowchart TD A[Sunrise 太阳升起] --> B[Draw Water 用人力打水] B --> C[Strike Flint 用火石生火] C --> D[Bake Bread 烤面包] D --> E[Milk the Cows 用人力挤牛奶] E --> F[Feed the Chickens 喂鸡] F --> G[Wash and Eat 洗漱吃饭] G --> H[Work Begins 开始劳作] H --> I[Sunset 太阳落山] I --> J[Oil Lamp 油灯] J --> K[Sleep 睡觉] K --> A ```
**This flowchart is a "power cycle." Every arrow connects to Lily's hands, her feet, or her family. Follow the arrows with your eyes, and you will see: making breakfast uses six different kinds of effort, and all of them
