The Code of Life: From Chemical Molecules to Biological Information
---
What is life? This is a seemingly simple yet profoundly deep question that has puzzled humanity for thousands of years. When we see blooming flowers in a park, fish swimming in a pond, or earthworms wriggling in the soil after rain, we naturally recognize these as manifestations of "life." However, when we shift our perspective to the microscopic realm—observing a drop of pond water under a microscope, or contemplating whether life exists elsewhere in the vast universe—our understanding of this question becomes far more complex and profound.
In this opening chapter of our book, we embark on a journey to explore the essence of life itself. We will begin with the most fundamental chemical molecules, gradually uncover the mysteries of biological information, and ultimately understand why synthetic biology represents an entirely new paradigm for humanity to understand and modify life. This journey will take us through billions of years of life's evolutionary history, witnessing how scientists have gradually deciphered the code of life, and looking ahead to the revolutionary changes that await us as humans learn to "program" life itself.
Defining and Characterizing Life: What Makes Something Alive
Precisely defining "life" is no easy task. After extensive research and deliberation, biologists have identified a set of common characteristics shared by all living organisms—characteristics that distinguish life from non-living matter.
Metabolism is one of the fundamental characteristics of life. All living organisms continuously exchange matter and energy with their external environment, obtaining energy from their surroundings and using it to maintain their existence and function. Plants convert solar energy into chemical energy through photosynthesis; animals obtain energy by consuming food; bacteria can utilize various chemical substances as energy sources. This continuous energy transformation and material cycling forms the foundation of life.
Growth and Development represent another prominent characteristic of life. Unlike non-living crystals that simply increase in size by adding material externally, the growth of living organisms is achieved through internally regulated mechanisms. A tiny acorn germinates, grows, and eventually becomes a towering oak tree—a process involving precise regulation of cell division, cellular differentiation, and morphogenesis. Even single-celled bacteria grow through cell division, a process equally under precise genetic control.
Response to Stimuli enables living organisms to perceive and respond to environmental changes. The sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica) rapidly folds its leaves when touched—a swift response to external stimuli; animals possess more complex nervous systems capable of detecting light, sound, touch, and various other stimuli, responding with appropriate behaviors; even simply structured bacteria can sense chemical gradients, moving toward favorable environments or away from harmful substances—a behavior known as chemotaxis.
Reproduction and Heredity are essential for life's continuity. All living organisms can produce offspring, passing their genetic information to the next generation. Without reproduction, life could not persist; without heredity, offspring could not inherit characteristics from their parents. Reproduction ensures life's continuation, while heredity guarantees the intergenerational transmission of biological traits, allowing species to maintain their uniqueness.
Evolution and Adaptation represent one of life's most remarkable characteristics. Through the long course of evolution, life continuously changes and adapts. The earliest life forms on Earth were simple single-celled organisms, but over billions of years of evolution, life gradually developed into complex multicellular organisms—from tiny algae to massive blue whales, from ground-hugging mosses to towering redwoods, the diversity of life on Earth is truly breathtaking. This diversity is the result of natural selection and genetic variation acting over vast stretches of time.
These characteristics together constitute what we recognize as "life." However, after gaining a basic understanding of life, a deeper question emerges: Is there some fundamental connection underlying all these seemingly diverse life forms?
Diversity and Unity of Life: Evidence for a Common Terrestrial Life Community
When we look at the living world around us, what first catches our eye is the dazzling diversity. Earth is home to over 8 million known species of organisms—ranging from viruses invisible to the naked eye to massive blue whales, from thermophilic archaea in deep-sea hydrothermal vents to penguins on Antarctic ice fields, life presents an astonishing array of forms and adaptations.
Yet beneath this seemingly boundless diversity, life reveals astonishing unity. This unity manifests not only in external morphology but more profoundly at the molecular level that underlies all life.
First, all known life forms use the same genetic information carrier—Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). Whether it's humans, fruit flies, plants, or bacteria, the molecular basis for storing genetic information is DNA in every case. This fact alone strongly suggests that all life on Earth may share a common origin. DNA consists of four nucleotides: adenine (A), thymine (T), guanine (G), and cytosine (C). These four simple "letters," arranged in different sequences, encode all the instructions needed to build and maintain life.
Second, all life uses the same genetic code. The g
