The year is 138 BCE, a deep autumn morning. Outside the Fuyang Gate on the northern edge of Chang'an, a caravan of over a hundred men prepares to depart. Their leader is Zhang Qian, a palace attendant of the Han Emperor, about to embark on a journey into the unknown West. Emperor Wu of Han personally bids him farewell, his gaze filled with imperial ambition toward those vast western territories. This young palace official could not have imagined that the road he was about to open would, over the following two millennia, reshape the map of human civilization and weave an unbroken bond connecting East and West. And the city from which he set forth—Chang'an—would transform from a regional capital into the undisputed eastern terminus of the Silk Road and one of the earliest great international metropolises in human history.
To understand how Chang'an became the eastern starting point of the Silk Road, we must first examine the city's exceptional geographical advantages and deep historical roots. Chang'an sits in the heart of the Guanzhong Plain, bordered by the Wei River to the north, the Qinling Mountains to the south, the Hangu Pass providing strategic defense to the east, and the Longshan and Liupan Mountains forming natural barriers to the west. This terrain, encircled by mountains and rivers, offered tremendous military advantages—what contemporaries described as "four strategic passes making it impregnable"—making Guanzhong since antiquity the ideal foundation for imperial enterprise.
The fertility of the Guanzhong Plain was equally remarkable. This alluvial plain formed by the long-term deposition of the Wei River and its tributaries boasts loose, fertile soil and convenient irrigation, yielding extraordinarily abundant agricultural output. The *Records of the Grand Historian* (Shiji) notes: "The Guanzhong region comprises one-third of the land under heaven, with merely three-tenths of the population; yet in measuring its wealth, it possesses six-tenths of the empire." This plain, accounting for less than three percent of the nation's territory, supported approximately sixty percent of the country's wealth—a testament to its extraordinary economic strength. Sima Qian further observed that the Guanzhong area where Chang'an was located featured "fertile fields extending a thousand li," sufficient grain production to sustain a large population and frequent military campaigns. This economic self-sufficiency and prosperity laid a solid material foundation for Chang'an's future rise as both imperial political center and international trade hub.
Chang'an's history as a capital stretches back to the Western Zhou period. King Wen of Zhou established Fengjing on the west bank of the Feng River, and King Wu subsequently built Haojing on the east bank, inaugurating Chang'an's legacy as a royal capital. Later, after unifying the six warring states, Emperor Qin Shi Huang constructed the magnificent Xianyang Palace and palatial complexes for the conquered kingdoms on the north bank of the Wei River. Though the Qin Empire was short-lived, its grand urban planning concepts and architectural heritage provided crucial reference for later Chang'an's development. In 202 BCE, Han Gaozu Liu Bang built the Changle Palace and Weiyang Palace southeast of Qin's Xianyang, formally establishing Chang'an as the capital of the Han Empire. Through subsequent generations of construction under emperors such as Hui, Wu, and Xuan, Western Han Chang'an expanded continuously in scale and increasingly refined in function, ultimately becoming a metropolis housing over 400,000 people within an urban area of approximately 36 square kilometers—the largest city in the world at that time.
The urban planning of Western Han Chang'an, inheriting the traditions of pre-Qin capital construction while showcasing unique ideological content and spatial organization principles, demonstrated a distinctive approach. The city's layout reflected the profound influence of Confucian ritual thought while adapting to the terrain of the Guanzhong Plain, creating a unified concept of "harmony between heaven and man" combined with "accommodation to local conditions."
Viewed in its entirety, Western Han Chang'an presented an irregular square outline. With city walls extending approximately 25.7 kilometers and enclosing an area of about 35 square kilometers, the urban form was irregular rather than perfectly square like later Sui-Tang Chang'an, largely because wall construction followed or relied on existing Qin-era palace retreats and natural contours. Archaeological surveys reveal that the twelve city gates were not symmetrically distributed, and the main streets inside the city did not entirely intersect at right angles. This "going with the flow" approach to urban planning reflected the Han people's concept of "modeling after heaven and earth" in capital construction—the city's layout should follow natural topography rather than forcibly altering the landscape.
The core functional zones of Chang'an were divided into three main areas: the imperial palace-administrative district, the official workshop-district, and the residential-commercial district. The imperial palaces, situated in the southwestern part of the city, centered on the Weiyang Palace, supplemented by the Changle Palace, Beigong Palace, Guigong Palace, and other palace complexes. Weiyang Palace, where the emperor conducted government affairs and held major ceremonies, remains evident today as an earthen platform located approximately seven kilometers northwest of modern Xi'an, its foundation measuring roughly 200 meters east-west, 350 meters north-south, and 15 meters high—a scale inspiring awe. Weiyang Palace's Front Hall was not merely the political center of the empire but a symbol of supreme power—Emperor Wu of Han received envoys from the Western Regions here, announcing imperial foreign policy, demonstrating Chang'an's commanding position as the empire's heart.
The residential areas were primarily located in the northeastern part of the city. Famous aristocratic wards such as Shangguangli and Xiuchenglingyi housed the mansions of high officials and ennobled heroes. These wards operated
