Chapter 1: Hello, Partner! – Meeting Your Sibling
Chapter 1: Hello, Partner! – Meeting Your Sibling
---
The morning light crept through Lily's bedroom curtains like a golden cat, stretching slowly across her quilt until it reached her nose. Lily's eyes fluttered open, and she smiled before she even remembered why. Today was going to be a special day—maybe the most special day of her whole entire life. Today was the day she had been waiting for, dreaming about, and talking about for what felt like forever.
She sat up in her bed and looked across the room at her brother's bed. Max was still sleeping, his thumb slowly moving toward his mouth the way it always did when he was about to wake up. His brown hair stuck up in the back like a little bird's nest, and his cheeks were rosy from dreaming. Lily loved watching her brother sleep. He looked so peaceful, so small, so perfectly Max.
But today, Max was going to wake up and find out that everything had changed.
Lily crept out of bed and tip-toed over to her brother's mattress on the floor. She knelt down beside him and poked his arm gently. "Max," she whispered. "Max, wake up. Something wonderful is happening today."
Max's eyes opened slowly, one at a time, like two little windows being unlocked. He looked up at his sister and smiled his biggest smile. "Is it breakfast time?" he asked hopefully.
Lily giggled. "Even better," she said. "We're going to meet our baby today!"
Max sat up so fast that his hair went everywhere. "The baby! The baby is coming TODAY?" he asked, his voice going high with excitement.
"The baby is coming HOME today," Lily corrected him. "Mom said the hospital is letting her go because she's big and strong and healthy. And we get to be the first ones to hold her. We're going to be a real family, Max. A real, big family!"
Max jumped out of bed and started running in circles around the room. "A baby! A baby! We're getting a baby!" he chanted.
"Shhh!" Lily laughed. "You'll wake Mom and Dad. Come on, let's get dressed. We have to look our absolute best for our baby sister."
"Our baby sister," Max repeated, trying out the words. "Is she really ours?"
"She's really ours," Lily promised. "She's been growing inside Mom's tummy for nine whole months, waiting to meet us. And today, we finally get to say hello."
---
Downstairs, the house smelled like pancakes and something sweet. Dad was standing at the stove, flipping golden circles onto a big plate. He was wearing his "World's Best Dad" apron—the one with the cartoon dinosaurs on it—and he had music playing from his phone. The Beatles were singing about all you need is love, and the whole kitchen felt warm and cozy and happy.
"Good morning, my big kids!" Dad said when he saw them come down the stairs. He scooped Max up into one arm and gave Lily a big hug with the other. "Are you ready for the big day?"
"Ready!" they both shouted at the same time.
Mom was sitting at the kitchen table, sipping her tea. She looked different than she usually did—she looked tired but also somehow more beautiful, like she was carrying a secret treasure that made her glow from the inside. Her hands rested gently on her belly, which was round and high and seemed to be humming with its own little heartbeat.
"Come here, my loves," Mom said, opening her arms. Lily and Max rushed over and wrapped themselves around her, being careful of the baby bump in the middle. "Do you know what today is?"
"The day we meet our baby sister!" Max said.
"That's right. Her name is Emma, remember? Emma Rose. She's going to be here so soon. But first, I want to talk to you about something important." Mom's voice was gentle but serious, and Lily felt her heart beat a little faster.
"What is it?" Lily asked, suddenly a little worried. "Is something wrong?"
"No, sweet girl, nothing is wrong. I just want to make sure you're ready for how you're going to feel today. You might feel very, very happy—like you could burst with joy. But you might also feel a little bit scared or nervous. That's okay. Both feelings are welcome today."
Max tilted his head. "Why would I be scared? I'm not scared of anything!"
Mom smiled. "You're so brave, little man. But sometimes when big things happen, our bodies get confused about what we're feeling. You might feel excited AND nervous at the same time. That's because your body is preparing you for something important. It's like when you feel butterflies in your tummy before going to a birthday party or starting a new school year."
Lily thought about that. She DID feel butterflies in her tummy. "What if the baby doesn't like us?" she asked quietly.
"Oh, sweetheart." Mom pulled her closer. "How could anyone not love you? You are kind and thoughtful and so full of love. Emma is going to adore you from the very first moment. She already knows your voices—she's been hearing you talk and laugh and sing for months. She's been waiting just as long as you have to meet her."
Max nodded seriously. "I can sing to her. I can sing her my favorite song about the wheels on the bus."
"She would love that," Mom said. "But right now, I think she would love some pancakes even more. Let's eat breakfast together, just us four. And then, when we're all full and happy, we'll go to the hospital to bring Emma home."

After breakfast, the whole family got ready for the big trip. Dad helped Max brush his teeth, and Lily tied her shoelaces all by herself. Mom put on her most comfortable clothes and fixed her hair in the mirror, but she kept touching her belly and smiling to herself, like she was having a secret conversation with the baby.
"Look how big I am!" Mom said, turning to show her belly to the kids. "Emma has been growing and growing. She's ready to come out and meet her family. Can you say hello to her?"
Lily and Max knelt down in front of Mom. "Hello, Emma," they said together. "We're coming to get you soon!"
Mom laughed. "She can hear you, you know. She hears everything. All your stories, all your songs, all your silly jokes. She's been listening to you this whole time, getting to know her big sister and big brother."
"Does she know we're going to play with her?" Max asked.
"She knows you want to play with her. She's been kicking and wiggling, getting herself ready for all the fun you're going to have together."
Lily put her hand gently on Mom's belly. "Emma, if you can hear me, we're going to be the best big sister and big brother ever. We're going to teach you everything. Like how to play hide and seek and how to build block towers and how to dance. And I'll share my stuffed bunny with you. Her name is Cotton, and she's very soft."
Max put his hand next to Lily's. "And I'll share my dinosaurs. Except T-Rex. T-Rex is a little bitey. But you can have all the others."
The baby kicked. Right under their hands, they felt a tiny foot push outward, like Emma was saying hello back.
"She kicked!" Max squealed. "She kicked our hands!"
"She felt us talking to her," Lily said in awe. "She knows we're here."
Mom smiled, her eyes a little bit wet. "She definitely knows you're here. And I think she's very excited to finally meet you in person."

The car ride to the hospital felt like the longest car ride of Lily's entire life. She kept looking out the window, watching the houses and trees and stores go by, but her mind was somewhere else entirely. She was imagining what Emma would look like. Would she have Mom's eyes? Dad's smile? Would she have hair like Lily did when she was a baby, or would she be bald like a little chick?
