| Chapter 1: Shhh—Listen, the Stones Are Talking!
Do you ever think that those tall and short houses are all cold, motionless, and speechless stones? That’s totally wrong! Do you remember the convenience store where you bought ice cream after school yesterday? While you squatted on the steps tearing the ice cream wrapper, did you notice the crooked little bear sticker stuck on its signboard? The boss said that was secretly put on by a first-grade little girl who came to buy popping candy last month. She originally wanted to stick it on her exercise book, but her hand slipped and it got stuck on the signboard. The boss was too lazy to tear it off, so he left it as "decoration". And the wooden chair you sit on in the classroom? There are two shallow scratches on the seat, which are the little cars that Xiaoyu from the third grade secretly carved with a compass during class last year. There is also a faint blue dot next to it, which was accidentally dripped by Xiaia when everyone was mixing paints during art class. The left leg of the chair is a bit wobbly, because last time during the sports meeting, a few boys carried the chair to run a relay race, and it got bumped when they fell.
Look, these seemingly cold houses and chairs seem to have lots of unspeakable little secrets. In fact, they are not made of cold stones at all — stones can talk, and buildings can tell stories, it’s just that no one taught you how to listen before.

The convenience store downstairs in your neighborhood has a blue light box at the door that says "Open 24 Hours", and a sticker on the freezer that says "New ice cream for 5 yuan". This is it greeting you: "Hi! I’m the convenience store that sells snacks and drinks. You can come find me even if you’re hungry late at night." Oh, I almost forgot to mention that there’s also a shallow, curved mark on the steps in front of the door. That was left last winter when the snow melted and turned to ice, and a little boy wearing roller skates fell and scraped the ice with his blade. This is also the convenience store telling you: "It’s slippery here in winter, everyone be careful when you walk!" You see, whether it’s the words on the light box, the sticker on the sign, or even the small scratches on the steps, they’re all the convenience store introducing itself to you.
Your family’s house also introduces itself! The "Fu" character on your door was pasted by your grandpa during the Spring Festival last year, and it’s a little crooked. That’s because it was your first time pasting a "Fu" character with grandpa, and your hand slipped and you didn’t stick it straight. Grandpa said "If you paste it crooked, good fortune will come to our home", so he didn’t tear it off to replace it. This crooked "Fu" character is your house telling you: "I hope your whole family is safe and full of good fortune this year!"
That pot of succulent on your balcony was brought back by your mom when she went to the flower market last month. Its round, chubby leaves turn a little pink at the tips when they bask in the sun every day. This is also your house telling you: "I have a little surprise here. Remember to look at me when you come home from school every day. I’ve grown a little plumper today!"
The teaching building of your school also introduces itself. The hallway walls are covered with drawings by children: some draw the sun, some draw little rabbits, and some draw you and your best friend holding hands going to school. There’s also a faint black mark at the base of the wall. That was left last summer when you accidentally smeared watermelon juice on the wall while eating watermelon. The student on duty tried to wipe it off several times but couldn’t, so the teacher said "Leave it, it’s a mark of your growth". This watermelon juice mark is the teaching building telling you: "I remember you little rascals smeared me with watermelon juice last time, and you secretly laughed that I couldn’t wipe it clean!"
You see, a building’s self-introduction is not the cold words written on a sign, but hidden in these cute little details. Only careful children can find them.
