The Secret of the Library
It was an ordinary Wednesday afternoon in Beijing, when autumn's coolness had just begun to show itself. Sunlight lazily streamed through the school library windows, carrying with it that distinctive faint scent of ink that old books possess. Ming, a fourteen-year-old boy, had originally wanted to find a quiet corner to finish yesterday's math homework, but somehow found himself drawn to a book he'd never noticed before, tucked away in the deepest part of the shelves.
What a peculiar book it was! Its deep brown leather cover was worn and faded, with curled yellowed pages at the corners, covered in strange symbols and patterns. Ming carefully lifted it from the shelf, and the spine creaked slightly as if recounting long years. When he opened the first page, a strange force suddenly surged—the printed letters began to glow, ancient words transforming into countless specks of light that rose from the pages.
"Wait, this can't be..." Ming's eyes widened, but before he could finish, those specks of light surrounded him like a vortex, the world began to spin, twist, and collapse—then reassemble.
When he opened his eyes again, the scene before him left him utterly astounded.
Number Castle
Ming found himself standing before the gate of a magnificent castle. This castle was entirely constructed from various numbers and geometric shapes—the massive stone pillars were stacked "1"s, the city walls were inlaid with perfect circular reliefs, two tall towers stood in the shapes of "2" and "3," and at the castle's highest point, an octagonal tower shimmered with mysterious light.
The castle gate slowly opened with an ancient creak. Behind it stood a strange little figure—a round-bodied person wearing a blue robe embroidered with mathematical symbols, a pointed hat decorated with pi symbols on his head, and holding a cane with a π emblem at its top. His eyes gleamed with wisdom, and a gentle smile curved his lips.
"Welcome to the Kingdom of Numbers, traveler from afar," the short figure bowed. "I am Pythagoras Pi, though you may call me Little Pi. I am the keeper of this castle and your guide here."
Ming opened his mouth, too shocked to speak. After a long while, he finally found his voice: "Is this... the Kingdom of Mathematics?"
Little Pi nodded with a smile: "That's one way to put it, but more precisely, this is the heart of the Kingdom of Numbers—Number Castle. In this world, all mathematical principles are presented in the most intuitive way. You will see numbers dance, geometry sing, and the mysteries of mathematics waiting to be discovered in every corner."
"But how did I get here?" Ming asked, confused. "I just opened a book."
"That was no ordinary book," Little Pi said with a mysterious wink. "That was the Source of Numbers—an ancient tome that legend says records all the secrets of numbers. Only souls truly curious about mathematics can open it. It seems you are the chosen traveler."
The Family of Numbers
Little Pi led Ming into the castle's grand hall. At its center floated a giant crystal ball filled with various numbers and symbols. As they approached, the ball began to display a series of strange images.
"Look," Little Pi pointed to the crystal ball. "This is the first lesson I must teach you—the family of numbers. In your world, numbers seem like cold, lifeless symbols, but here, every number has its own life and story. Let us begin with the oldest family: the natural numbers."
In the crystal ball appeared the sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...
Natural numbers are the oldest family of numbers that humans recognized. Little Pi said slowly, their history can be traced back to the dawn of human civilization. Imagine ancient humans counting prey with their fingers, recording days by tying knots in ropes, calculating goods with pebbles. The first numbers were born this way—numbers used to represent "how many."
"In ancient Egypt, people used hieroglyphics to represent numbers." Little Pi waved his cane, and the images changed to Egyptian hieroglyphics. "A vertical line represented 1, an inverted V represented 10, two curled ropes represented 100. You see, although crude, these number systems were a major leap in human abstract thinking."
Ming watched those ancient symbols intently, suddenly realizing something: "So natural numbers are numbers used for counting? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... counting forever, never ending?"
Precisely correct. Little Pi nodded approvingly. The set of natural numbers is usually denoted by the letter $\mathbb{N}$: $\mathbb{N} = \{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...\}$. Some mathematicians also include 0, writing it as $\mathbb{N}_0 = \{0, 1, 2, 3, 4, ...\}$, depending on different conventions. What matters is that natural numbers have two key properties: first, they have a smallest element (1 or 0); second, every natural number has a unique immediate successor, just like in a line where each person has the next one standing behind them.
The Expansion to Integers
Just as Ming thought he had a basic understanding of numbers, the images in the crystal ball suddenly flickered, and the numbers within began to grow restless.
"Wait," Little Pi's expression grew serious, "although natural numbers are widely useful, they have a fatal flaw—they cannot handle situations of 'decrease.' Imagine trying to record debt, temperatures below zero, or basement floors, and natural numbers become useless."
The crystal ball showed various scenes: a merchant's ledger filled with red numbers, a farmer gazing at barren fields, an explorer recording temperatures below zero.
Thus, the family of integers was born. Little Pi's voice carried a hint of reverence. On the basis of natural numbers, we added negative numbers: -1, -2, -3, -4, -5... The set of integers is denoted by $\mathbb{Z}$: $\mathbb{Z} = \{..., -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...\}$
Ming stared at those numbers with minus signs: "Negative numb
